. Chrome tanned leather does cause rusting. I experienced this in the last couple of weeks. It caused rusting and darkening of the patina on an old Dixon, carbon steel knife. I had cleaned and oiled it well prior to keeping it in the sheath. I kept a new, clean, oiled Osbourne blade in the same sheath, just to check. It developed rust spots overnight. So chrome tanned leather can damage knives. The sheath was clean and dry. I checked for that as well.

I looked at your blog on round edge bevelers and I was hoping you could tell me where to find round edge bevelers that won't break the bank. Thanks.

Aliexpress. I've got some unbranded ones from there, they work pretty well.

Hi there. I always learn something on your lives. I had always heard that chrome tanned could tarnish the metal. How about chrome tan on our skin? Like a bracelet for instance. I have also heard that the chromium could give our skin a reaction.

Some people react to it, most do not. It also depends on the surface finish which can act as a barrier.

Wanted to ask you about belt punches (strap end and hole punches) that will not break the bank as for beginning? I know Blanchard are well known and respected but the prices…not so beginner friendly 😂

Probably S&R punch set (German) which you can get on amazon usually. For a strap cutter I would go vintage. Usually plenty on ebay, just needs some tlc.

Re: fully turned edges...Yes, I've seen (pics of) that. Peter Main has a picture of a knife sheath that he did and it has a fully wrapped edge. Re: Chrome-tan causing rust: I have experienced this. However....it is worth noting that the item that rusted was in a holster, in a humid environment, AND it had a dry/not oiled Parkerized finish from the factory. (That is worth noting because Parkerizing is an *incomplete* finish. It's a great substrate for holding oil/grease in place. It was often used on weapons that were going to spend a good amount of time wrapped in Cosmolene while being transported to the European and the Pacific war theaters by boat.) I'll allow that it is quite likely that current production chrome tanned leather is MUCH LESS likely to cause problems than some older types of chrome tanning simply because of technologically better processes and higher standards. The issue was/is the reaction of chromium salts in the leather reacting with the metal. With today's industry standards, I think we'd see significantly less 'free' chemicals that remain after the rinsing stage of the process.

That's really interesting to hear! Yes, I'd like to see if that parkerized finish would have done the same in a veg-tan holster. Food for thought. Thank you for sharing.

Would it be possible for you to speak a little bit about "Order of Operation"? Like when it comes to edge finishing. Trim excess, crease, bevel, burnish, sanding? etc tips on what to think about? Or is that type of discussion reserved for your courses? I might join later on but I am not feeling ready yet. Thanks for making some great content. I am really enjoying your videos.

Thank you for your question. Yes, I actually have a video series discussing just that. It's called the 'Leathercraft Beginner Class' and goes through cutting, creasing, stitching and edge finishing. It is not the full 'Masterclass', so it's only £27, however you can get a refund if you don't find what you need with it, or you can get the £27 back when you upgrade to the Masterclass. Click the link here and I'll show you: www.leathercraftmasterclass.com/beginnerclass
