This movie is not about alcoholism. Its about unconditional love. Ben could have been any other self-destructive character, like a heroin junkie, or an AIDS patient. The point is, he was clearly on a downward spiral and still found someone who loved him despite of his imperfections. He was accepted for all the good and the bad that came with him. And that is what makes unconditional love tough.
