When I was at five star basketball camp, when Howard Garfunkel was still alive, he made it very clear. What an assist was “no more than two steps after the pass, no more than two dribbles, after the pass , leading directly to a basket” And I remember him being repetitive about it that year because they were finally gonna start keeping track of assists for games where they didn’t previously at the camp.
@bipolarminddroppingsАй бұрын
the whole "two steps, two dribbles" thing is too strict, but a good guideline. For illustration, when Joker throws an outlet pass to an open man and they need more than 2 dribbles to get to the basket for the dunk, that's an assist in my book. I think the actual rules are fine "the pass must lead directly to a basket" which doesn't limit how many steps or dribbles the person can take, but is a very clear rule. We all know what leading directly to a basket looks like, whether they took one step, three dribbles, or catch an alley-oop. Maybe there should be an accompanying guideline of "the receiving player should use as few dribbles or step as neccessary" which would mean that if you do a hesitation move, or a step back and drive, it's not an assist. The whole problem of having a rule that states categorically "if you take more than X steps, it's not an assist" is there will be times where it should have been an assist but the rules say it isn't, and we don't want that. We want legit assists to count, while these dumb ones they're getting today don't.

@bipolarminddroppings if steps aren't limited then wouldn't every pass be counted as an assist? A guy passes the ball half court, player dribbles all the way down the court, sidesteps the defender and makes a basket, should an assist be counted? Technically, they receiver made moves to get the basket, using more than 2 steps and dribbles?
@juliuscaesar6994Ай бұрын
@@bipolarminddroppingsthat's why ball movement is essential bro🤦♂️.. Sometimes you are forced into taking shots because of the shot clock, that's called good team defense.. Hard to have good defense in general and an offensive flow when players like lebron only want certified all stars and postup shooters waiting on him to do something first.. seriously if somebody just isn't poppin off for the night the offense is held captive until he does something.. That's why real fans call him selfish.. Easy to accumulate stats when he practically plays the entire game through himself.. Everyone becomes disposable then is eventually traded or he leaves, then Bron led teams are deemed trash because they never had a real identity to began with, a lot of talent usually but no direction and it takes the universe to bend to his beckon call to even win once.. Great individual talent but his ability to lead and be a team player is what's actually garbage.. So yes his seemingly statistical prowess is very misleading
@bipolarminddroppingsАй бұрын
@@ttmho96 no. That's my point, you don't limit it specifically to a number. You know when you watch it whether it's an assist or not. If Joker throws a pass to an open man at the half, and he strolls up and dunks it, that's an assist, no matter how many steps he took or how many dribbles. Does the pass lead directly to a score? Yes = Assist. No = not assist. It really doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.

@schoolroadentertainment7631Ай бұрын
@OrNado849 Thanks for responding. Starting off, when MJ initially took time off (1993) his father had passed in horrific fashion. I find it disingenuous that people make it seem like he took time off just because. His second retirement was because he said he wanted to give others a chance at winning (1999) after he'd won EVERYTHING you could possibly win as an NBA player. Then he still came back for the wizards at 37 plus and averaged 20 on one leg whilst being the BEST player on that roster and leading them to playoff contention before his injury. While Bron has been consistent for an extended period of time, NO ONE was as dominant as MJ for as long as he was. We'll never see another double three-peat and that was MJ's prime and if you're asking me, I'm taking the player who won 6 chips and 6 FMVP's because he's a proven and consistent winner.

@@schoolroadentertainment7631 Please stop attributing team accolades to an individual. MJ had the best roster in the league during the 90's- CHI was the Vegas favorite in 5/6 Finals (with the other being LAL being favored despite Worthy being severely limited with a high ankle sprain in the WCF). LBJ was the Vegas favorite in 3/10 Finals, prior to the Finals. In 1994, CHI won 55 games & a playoff series without MJ- a roster that had a top 3 MVP player (Pippen) & 2 other All Stars (Armstrong & Grant)- WITHOUT MJ. Sure, they added a rookie Toni Kukoc too. But surely a rookie Kukoc doesnt move the needle as much as MJ right? I ask you- which team in the 90's could lose its best player and still have 3 other All Stars on their roster? Then in 1996, had to add the best rebounder in the league (Rodman) in order to get past Orlando. Rodman was also a defensive menace. MJ won 5/6 Finals with a teammate who was both All NBA & All Defense- Pippen did this 5x. LBJ won 1 Finals with a teammate who was both All NBA & All Defense- AD in 2020, his only teammate to ever do that (AD also did this last year). MJ played a total of 9 HOFers over 6 Finals. Lebron played a total of 31 HOFers over 10 Finals, 18 over his 6 appearances. MJ never won a playoff series without Pippen in a 15 year career. Pippen had more assists, steals, blocks & rebounds than MJ over their 6 Finals playoff runs. LBJ took multiple rosters without another All Star to Conference Finals & Finals. LBJ led multiple Finals for both teams in every major statistical category. MJ led the league in shot attempts 9x. LBJ led the league in shot attempts 1x- the year he won the scoring title (shocker). In closing, Lebron played more talented/better teams in the Finals. He was often times outmatched. MJ never faced a roster that was better than his in the Finals. Lebron did that at the very least 4x from 2015-2018, on top of in 2007 against SAS. I say this respectfully and hope this can lead to an informative/respectful back & forth.

That collaborative effort by Klutch Sports & Tom Haberstroh to discredit MJ's DPOY award, was nothing short of deplorable and quickly debunked by several KZbin channels...Jonny Arnett's rebuttal video was particularly interesting. He analysed 10 home games from Jordan's DPOY season, alongside the actual game footage, including the 6 games referenced in Haberstroh's article. Arnett made a CRUCIAL discovery during his breakdown, something Haberstroh failed to divulge...Jonny counted 15 occasions where Jordan got his hand on the opponent's ball, causing a deflection...using today's rules he labeled these deflections as 15 blocks but noted that the Statistician did NOT credit these 15 blocks to MJ's official block count. BOTTOM LINE: In those 10 games, MJ's blocks were UNDER credited, however, his steals appeared to have been over credited, by an almost identical number... It's glaringly obvious to any objective eye what happened here...there was no 'gifting' of steals, that Stat-keeper clearly interpreted those 15 blocks as STEALS! It's the only logical explanation for Jordan's block count being under credited! Ask yourself this question...if that Stat-keeper was intent on purposely inflating MJ's defensive stats, why would he UNDER credit his blocks? If his goal truly was to 'gift' defensive stats, he UNDOUBTEDLY would have credited every single one of those 15 blocks to Jordan's block count...but he didn't! Shockingly though, despite having made this significant discovery, Jonny STILL concludes at the end of the video that MJ's steals had been intentionally inflated! Such a conclusion simply does not reconcile with the obvious surplus/deficit correlation that he discovered between the blocks and steals! Logic dictates that Statistician credited those 15 blocks to MJ's steal count and that is evidenced by Jordan's block count being UNDER credited by an almost identical number! The question is, was the Stat-keeper correct in labelling those blocks as steals or should they have been credited as blocks, like Jonny suggested? To answer that question, more research needs to be conducted into the rules of that Era to determine exactly how steals were consistently interpreted and officiated at that time. I recently watched an old 1992 Bulls regular season game and noticed that MJ got his hand on the opponent's ball on 2 separate occasions, deflecting the ball towards two of his teammates, with the commentator announcing "another steal for MJ" on both occasions, indicating that steals were credited to the player causing the deflection...that's NOT consistent with how Jonny (or Haberstroh) analysed Jordan's steals in their analysis. Something else neither accounted for is the fact that Stat-keepers in the 80's didn't have the luxury of accessing instant replay or multiple camera angles, it's also possible that an occasional block was misinterpreted as a steal. Finally, it's important to note that even if Jonny is correct, and his research into the rules of that Era determines that those 15 deflections should have been labeled as blocks and not steals, that would amount to stat misplacement, NOT stat inflation. There's a very important distinction there. In such case, MJ's official steal count for those 10 games would indeed need to be reduced by 15, however, his official block count would then need to be INCREASED by 15! So no matter how you slice it, whether those 15 deflections are placed in the steals column or in the blocks column, it wouldn't change Jordan's overall defensive stats in those 10 games because you would essentially be subtracting 15 from one defensive count and adding 15 to another defensive count, which of course would have ZERO impact on the validity of MJ's DPOY award. The fact remains, when you combine the total number of blocks and steals that Jonny tracked into one single figure, that figure almost perfectly matches the official box score, ergo ZERO evidence of stat inflation. Countless viewers echoed my observations down in the comment section of Jonny's video months ago and in his defense he did reply to some of these comments, acknowledging the flaws in his original analysis of MJ's steals, promising to release a follow-up video. Interestingly though, no such follow-up video has been released to date.

FINALLY! I've been complaining about this for at least a decade. Growing up an assist meant you got the ball to a guy and he immediately scored. If he had to make a skill move, work to get open it wasn't an assist. Someone has to have the clip of Shaq finding out what counts for a rebound now too. He was so upset & asked Chuvk & Kenny and Kenny responded with a disgusted, "Yeah." Now an assist means you passed it to the guy at any point in the game and they score. A rebound is also up to discretion where if you touch the ball at all on the way down you can be credited with a rebound. Westbrook & Harden's triple-doubles a few years ago when they "set records" are all fraudulent.
