What are the security risks, if any, of using the sync option instead of the traditional QR code?
@CryptoDad29 күн бұрын
The security is provided by the device. The account information is stored as key and can only by shared by someone who has physical possession of the device and knows the pin (in other words only you)

CryptoDad: Just to reconfirm, the sync does work with NanoX. Question please: I see that you have accounts managed with a Flex and some accounts with a Stax. Have you been able to install the sync app on both the Stax and Flex and they both sync with your Ledger Live app? I tried to do it with a NanoX and my Flex and I am not sure it it is working properly. Please let me know if you have it syncing with both your Flex and Stax? Thanks, John

All of the account information is stored on whichever device you sync. So you really only need one device to do the sync process.

is it safe dad? i doubt it yesterday to sync when it pop up i thought it was scam :)

CryptoDad, question please: I have two NanoX's which are duplicate wallets. I use the second in case I lose the first. They are on the same seed phrase. The question is how to enable Sync on both of them. I already did sync on the primary one. Is it just a matter of maually downloading the sync app to the second backup device?
@CryptoDad29 күн бұрын
I wasn’t sure that the ledger nano X supported the sync app. Apparently it does, which is good news. Yeah I think your last thought is the best way to go, which is to just install the sync app on the second backup device. So basically you have the sync app on both mirror backups in case one fails you’ll still be able to do your syncs. However, I believe it is the sync app that has the current accounts and configurations so when you go to add new accounts or remove old accounts, I think you should run the sync on one device and then pull out the back up and run it again just to make sure that the back up has your current configuration, I haven’t tested this out yet but that’s my intuition.

@@CryptoDad thank you for your reply. I am not sure it actually works the way we hope. I have installed the sync app on the backup NanoX. When I open the app there really is no way to initiate a "sync" but perhaps it only does that when it detects a change in the accounts or something(which I have not yet done but will test it by adding another account to my Ledger Live).

Hi Rex, Another fantastic tutorial! I enabled it, and everything works seamlessly. What I’m curious about is how the syncing continues even after my Stax is disconnected. I renamed some accounts on Ledger Live for Windows, and the changes also reflected on my Ledger Live mobile app. This leads me to believe that they must communicate via a server, correct? If it were a peer-to-peer connection, it would likely require a static IP. Since they remain synced without a connected wallet, how is the security of this communication maintained? Is the communication encrypted using my wallet’s private key, similar to how it works with certain dApps? If so, this would ensure that even if someone were to intercept the communication, they wouldn’t be able to decipher it due to the encryption. Apologies for the lengthy question, and I really appreciate your time!

Is there any risk of ledger sync compromising seed phrase such as extracting out of device?
@CryptoDad19 күн бұрын
No

how is it encrypted how do we know there is no access whatsoever to the sync app? thanks for everything you do.

The sync data is protected by the same security that protects your private key. No one has access to the sink functionality, except the person who has physical control of the device and knows the pin. In other words only you.

@CryptoDad20 күн бұрын
Your accounts are saved in Ledger Live. Ledger sync is just an easy way to back them up. But you can never really lose your accounts as long as you have your device. It’s a little more complicated to recover your accounts manually, but it can be done. And you definitely couldn’t lose any crypto using ledger sync either if that’s what you’re thinking.

And yet they haven’t invented any kind of profile management... They should ensure this...

Shame they haven't solved the problem of multiple devices for Ledger Live. I understand there is cumbersome manual fix for this where you have to change and rename directories in Windows, but that isn't a great solution. I wish they solved that problem first over syncing. Something where Ledger live can switch to the appropriate device when device is connected and not show all accounts, but only accounts connected to that device. Many of us have multiple devices for complete deferent businesses that want things kept separately without having to faff around with renaming and changing folders.
@CryptoDad29 күн бұрын
Yes, I have always said that Ledger Live should have a profiles feature like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. That way, different people could use one computer and one copy of Ledger Live. Each person would have their own password. This could also be used to manage separate portfolios for one person as well ( as you mentioned). I currently have three or four different Ledger Live preferences folder in my Appdata->Roaming folder. I have to constantly rename them in order to make them the active preference folder.
