As a Filipino, Lee Kwan yew was and still is the best statesman that Asia has had. He was not just intelligent, he was insightful and unapologetic because he was speaking truths regardless of how distasteful it might have sounded especially to westerners like the US and EU. If all leaders of southeast Asia had even just 25% of Lee Kwan yew's brains , southeast Asia would be a force in the global stage. Instead, most countries in the region, my country the Philippines in particular, seem to want to remain forever under the shadow of their former colonizers like the US. We have no sense of our history, because its been erased from our collective memory under More than 450 years of brutal Spanish and american colonization and brainwashing. No sense of national identity. Even our name "Filipino" and "Philippines" is a name given by our spanish colonizers to honor their king Philip and to designate us as their slaves yet we embrace the name and are even proud of it. Hence, without any national identity we have no patriotic fervor, no unity, and therefore, no hope for progress

Japanese have a 'white' mentality. They regarded themselves as equal to Anglosaxons and treated them very well. While Japanese soldiers raped and murdered Asian nurses in Singapore General Hospital and elsewhere, they spared the Anglosaxon staff. In fact they were very well treated. One of the reasons Japanese took it out on the Chinese was that in China, Chinese soldiers together with the population held back the Japanese occupation. What was expected to be a 6 month campaign went on to the end of the war, tying down half the Japanese military, which in turn affected the Japanese campaign in Asia and Pacific. It was a desperate act. Very much like the incarceration of the Chinese in Malaya during the Emergency. It was a sign of desperation by the British who were losing the battle for the hearts and minds of Malayans.

I have worked for a Japanese insurance company for 10 years, and have many Japanese companies in China as clients. So I have some 1st hand experience about Japanese people and culture. I highly recommend anyone who is interested in Japanese culture, to watch a documentary, The Pacific War in Color. from what I can tell, the Japanese havent change their mindset even a tiny little bit from the documentary showed, it really precisely describes how Japanese make decisions, even today. So I think when things go south, Japan can be a vary dangerous country very easily, the US really shouldnt unleash their Japan dog for deterring China.

He actually served the Imperial Japanese Army during the Japanese occupation of Singapore from 1942 to 1943. He helped the Japanese to decipher Allied radio messages. He left the Imperial Japanese Army when the tide of the war turned against the Japanese in the Pacific. The British knew of his collaboration but chose not to prosecute him.

Some other observations from living here: - Plenty of Mainland Chinese people living & studying here. They make up the largest foreign resident group here (alongside the Vietnamese and Koreans). Reasons for moving include a love of Japanese culture like anime plus being culturally easier to adapt to given how easy the written language is to learn. Additionally, some students are sent by their parents to study here given the perceived safety for their children over living in the US/UK/Australia etc + Japanese universities are still highly regarded. Have also met a number of Singaporeans living here. - I somewhat disagree with his comment on telling young Japanese to leave the country if they could speak English. You can get some pretty awesome jobs/opportunities here if you're bilingual. Though I definitely see females in jobs that are well below their capabilities. - Observed lots of foreigners from across the world trying to make a life here despite the poor wages and rigid work culture. Shows that Japan still attracts people through its culture/soft power. Some do well here, some others struggle their way through, and many leave after a few years. - Tokyo still feels rich. Plenty of people are out and about shopping & eating. Rarely see any vacancies or poorly maintained buildings, though I hear there is a homeless problem that's well hidden. The 1980s must have been an amazing time to live in Japan. - Have met a surprising number of overseas-born Japanese (2-5th generation) from the USA or Canada that have decided to make a permanent return to Japan. Perhaps not a surprise given the sh*tshow back home (not my quote). - Korean pop culture is extremely popular with the young generation of Japanese (25 and under) - Right-wing activists are aplenty here. You'll see them driving around in sound-trucks spouting anti-foreign sentiment plus waving the imperial flag around. - English levels are worse than I thought. Only a handful of people I've met can speak English at a level where you can have engaging conversations. - Wages here are pretty bad, compounded by the weak yen. This likely means more Japanese will take fewer holidays OR they leave the country in search of better wages (which is difficult to do without speaking another language).

I haven't read Lee's memoirs from 1998 but found this quote interesting in the context of his life (and with the new release of the movie, Oppenheimer): "Those of my generation who saw the Japanese soldiers in the flesh cannot forget their almost inhuman attitude to death in battle. They were not afraid to die. They made fearsome enemies and needed so little to keep going -- the tin containers on their belts carried only rice, some soya beans and salt fish. Throughout the occupation, a common sight was of Japanese soldiers at bayonet practice on open fields. Their war cries as they stabbed their gunny-sack dummies were bloodcurdling. Had the British re-invaded and fought their way down Malaya into Singapore, there would have been immense devastation. After seeing them at close quarters, I was sure that for sheer fighting spirit, they were among the world's finest. But they also showed a meanness and viciousness towards their enemies equal to the Huns'. Genghis Khan and his hordes could not have been more merciless. I have no doubts about whether the two atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were necessary. Without them, hundreds of thousands of civilians in Malaya and Singapore, and millions in Japan itself, would have perished." I've been in Japan for more than 3 months now. In an attempt to decipher the country, I did some research into what these two legends thought about Japan and its people, whose lives were defined (and almost lost) by WW2. If you spend most of your time in the major Japanese cities, it is difficult to tell if it's a country on the decline. Tokyo especially feels as busy and vibrant as ever. However, the demographic time bomb is hard to ignore and as Lee says, "Demographics determine the destiny of a people. If you are declining in population, as a nation, you are declining in strength." I haven’t been in the country long enough to confirm but there’s a certain way people must act and behave, especially in the workplace. This is apparent with my Japanese friends who put 1000% into their office jobs (and are happy to do it) at the detriment of their own physical and mental health, unable to refuse a request. Even at their non-religious festivals, there’s almost a religious fervour to them. I attended the Sapporo YOSAKOI Soran Festival where super-coordinated teams of performers dance rigorously all day in the searing heat - for three days in a row. Saw some people pass out as well as plenty of tears along the way. As Robert Kuok says, “I saw what made the Japanese tick. I admired their discipline. That's what made Japan what it is today: discipline - not brilliance, but discipline. You obeyed orders, even if the orders were wrong.” In the end, both were pragmatists who built solid relations with Japan and its people, somehow forgiving the past (but never forgetting the untold atrocities).

When the British and the Dutch first invaded they too acted just like the Japanese, barbarically. Only after they had pacified and westernised you (Lee Kwan Yu being a very good example) and made you docile did they then start treating you 'nicely', if being treated condescendingly as a lesser breed of human can be said to be nice. We have also seen how unbridled immigration without consideration for the norms of the majoritarian culture has also caused havoc in society. Is Japan’s obsession with protectionism and racial purity right or wrong? I’m sort of in a middle ground in this. Diversity IS NOT strength. Neither is pandering to just one singular culture good for the development of a single nation. You're 100% correct. Japan has "high culture" meaning: Hard working population, highly skilled, strong civic responsibility. Whereas mass immigration produces divisiveness and destruction of the national integrity from within. Hungary is another good eg of avoiding this despite the West EU/UN all demonizing that country for saying no to mass immigration. Equally small nations must resolve the biggest challenge of the future = High Population Density to Low Natural Resources. But long term wise Singaporeans lose because we did not track the rate of skills transfer. Jobs are held by immigrants or permanent residents while many locals make do with the gig economy. Im a Filipino in Canada and one of the things I notice between Filipinos and Singaporeans is that Singaporeans accumulate their experiences and take the best ideas from the British and make it their own and move forward, carrying the virtues of personal responsibility and accountability. Some countries and peoples have largely moved on. Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, etc. Others have not -- Korea and China. The main reason after WWII Japan able to become 2nd largest economy in the world, was due the fact the USA done all its defense works ( US has many military bases in Japan to protect Japan) such that Japan had not spent a cent on its military for the defense and that saved a lot of money on the country's annual budget.

This view is totally irrelevant today as Japan is no longer the 2nd. largest economy in the world as it has been kicked out by China several years ago. China will soon over take the U.S. as the largest economy in the world in the next few years and for Japan , it is slipping fast into the 3rd. position as India or S.Korea would be replacing Japan which has lost their economic superiority to the highly technocratic world these days where China takes the lead in the 21st. century. Japan has already been surpassed by China. For example, in 2022, the value of goods exported from Japan amounted to around 746.92 billion U.S. dollars. Whereas China exported $3.593 trillion dollars ! That's almost 5 times of Japan's total exports. Not just that but China's trade surplus for 2022 was $877.6 billion dollars and it's bigger than Japan's total exports 2022. And China's trade surplus will likely exceed US $ 1 trillion dollars by the end of this year. No way that Japan can catch up with China.

True, Japan is just another economic power now but it will not be in the same category as China which is now poised to be ahead of the U.S. economy within this decade. It’s ppp has just surpassed the U.S. recently. India would most likely overtake Japan as the third largest economy in the next decade , provided that its domestic politics doesn’t get in the way of its economy. Other potential economies like Indonesia or S Korea would also be in the lineup to overtake Japan as among the world’s dominant economies .

Lee may have been brilliant in other aspects but he got it all wrong with the Japanese. His "forgiveness" of the Japanese is despicable. He was after all a Chinese leader and could have taken a tougher stance against the Japanese and asked them to at least apologize. His prediction of Japan becoming a technological and financial force to be reckoned with turned out ot be false. And asking the Chinese to learn Japanese is at best a lack of self respect and at worst gross ingratitude to his own racial heritage that thankfully, most of his people did not subscribe to.

Just as one shouldn't condone atrocities against humanity, one should be clear-minded about who one should condemn. Necessity dictates that humans put aside their differences for the sake of mutual survival, even if they used to be bitter enemies. For all my life, I've been educated in the history of WWII from the point of view of the victims in Asia. Yet, now as I approach my 40 years of age, I feel no hate, no animosity, towards any Japanese, neither to their culture, nor to their race in general. Why should I? The perpetuators of atrocities have all long been dead, and their descendants are not following in their footsteps. Building an armed force or visiting some temple tread on your nerves? I have more clear and present danger to worry about. I urge all readers of this comment to ask yourself this: does learning from history give you the right to exact vengeance on someone that had not done you any harm in the present? Is it the responsibility of a few politicians to safeguard your own livelihood and tell you who to hate? Is it meaningful to fear-monger and trash-talk another culture, knowing that life is short.

Yet, it would not do you any good to hold grudges on people that are long dead. WWII is more than 60 years ago. Any Japanese soldiers or officers that had participated in any war crimes would have either been brought to justice or dead. Holding a grudge against the current generation that has done you no wrong is nothing but victim-mentality, which you would do well to let go of.

@@vulcansaur Good point about being wary. Notice that I have never mentioned letting go of caution even though I advocate letting go of bitterness. I'm old enough to know that the world is never a place where a simple: "Forgive and forget." would be sufficient to make enemies kiss a make up. My point, however, is that it is neither practical, nor healthy to hold grudges over crimes that are more than half a century past. Do you hear of people complaining about how Mongolians have slaughtered nearly half the world population in their mad conquest across the known world? I don't see anyone complaining to present-day Mongolians about how Genghis Khan is a demon in human form. If you ask me, ANY culture, not just the Japanese, can devolve into man-eating monsters, so it is important to keep an open-mind about people, and to be wary of any calls for dissidence because of some age-old feuds. Disagreements have a nasty habit of spiraling out of control to the detriment of all parties. If you are that concerned about educating young Japanese about the facts, you should be making friends with them so that they would at least listen to you. Then again, I doubt anyone is really that interested in hearing about history of how their ancestors are the 'bad guys'. Anyway, that's my entire point: The current generation of Japanese, even if ignorant of past, is NOT the enemy that had perpetuated war-crimes. It's time to bury the hatchet.
