LYK is a world legend. His policies were totally applicable during his time of initial chaos and made excellent economic progress. However, there will always be morons (usually youngsters who didn't study history) who comment about his strict rules and apply them to modern times. Without his strict rules, there would not be good foundation for the next steps in modern transformation. Btw, to all foreigners, please stop thinking it is illegal to chew gum in Singapore. It is NOT illegal to chew gum but it is illegal to sell gum. This is to limit gum stuck in public places which is not only a nuisance but more importantly an ugly deterrence to the country's image as a tourist attraction. You can bring in your own gum from abroad for personal consumption, you don't have to declare and you will not be detained at the customs but you will be prosecuted if found littering. On the other hand, while we love foreigners coming to visit, we don't love your unsightly gum stuck on inappropriate places, so just don't even bring in any please.

He believed in 'metritocracy' in selecting leaders to top positions. Meaning, you will be promoted on your talents and what you can bring rather than who you are or what race, religion, culture you were born into. As it has been proven extremely successful in all Eastern Asian countries. One notable example of how innovation is conducted in China in recent years. -- human beings are intrinsically innovative. But the resource, or lack of it, limits the people's freedom for innovation -- since innovation could fail, and when you're poor, you can't afford a single failure. YOu have to be risk averse. This is especially evident amongst white workers. Thank goodness for a healthy influx of Asian migrants, we have people who are willing to work harder and longer hours. For Australia to truly change for the better, attitude toward work has got to improve, fast. Case in point, a simple roadwork seems to take forever to complete with an unbelievable number of workers to do the job. So much waste of public funds. Oh by the way, Australians being the richest people in the world is just a fallacy. It is the well heeled and/or highly educated migrants who bring in much wealth into the country, investing in real estate and setting up businesses. Lee Kwan-Yew was right about Australian mentality. Australia's economic rise and its avoidance of an economic recession during the world financial crisis in 2008 was completely due to the rapid rise of China with its massive demand for natural resources with Australia enjoying a huge trade surplus with China. Now Australia has decided to burn the bridges with China to join the USA to "contain" China with the overtly anti-China AUKUS alliance. I think Australia's economic golden years has now passed because no other market has the scale of China for Australia's exports.
@petersinclair39972 жыл бұрын
Australia’s GDP is based largely on Services and Knowledge Industries, not it’s huge mining industries. Agree about Oz sailing through the GFC, owing to China’s purchase of its exports. Likely, Australia will build its rare earth industry to diversify from coal and iron ore. Also, AUKUS will prove more to do with building its defence industry in partnership with United States under AUKUS and act as hub for the “Global Britain” to project into the Asia Pacific through the CP TPP. China is reliant on the United State’s MFN trade status and Australia’s reliable supply of industrial quality raw resources. Singapore would be challenged in choosing a side in a hot China-AUKUS conflict. There is no way the United States will allow Singapore, to wait to see, who is winning, then pick a side.

Lee Kuan Yew's insight and wisdom were instrumental in Singapore's success. His leadership teaches us that leaders should not be chosen based on ethnicity, religion, or skin color but on their qualities and abilities. A great leader is visionary, unites diverse groups, promotes equality, prioritizes pragmatism over ideology, and focuses on the bigger picture for the nation's prosperity. One of the reasons Singapore is so successful is the presence of its three major ethnicities: Malays, Chinese, and Indians. This cultural diversity has provided Singapore with a significant advantage in business, enabling connections with many countries around the world. Instead of limiting the country with mindless leaders that only dwells on blames on a certain ethnicity that resulted the poor ruling of the country, blame it on the leaders that has no qualities to actually rule a multi-racial country like Singapore. He had the knack to zoom out and see the bigger picture, ignoring the religious, ethnic, and geographic divides. By uniting a diverse population, he fostered a shared national identity, making long-term plans. Tolerance and equality were his go-to values. He realized the importance of global competitiveness, turning Singapore into a trade and investment magnet. His down-to-earth, practical style kept the nation on the right track, always prioritizing progress over divisive matters. In a nutshell, Lee Kuan Yew's leadership, built on a broad perspective, took Singapore from a struggling nation to a modern, prosperous success story. Singapore was lucky to have him and his team that made Singapore the Lion it is in SEA.

He is a man of vision and a nation builder. He does hold an over-optimistic view of China. The same can be said of just about any nation as far as rising like Singapore. In practice, there are many conditions and factors involved. The people of Singapore (as Malaysia) are strongly influenced by the British and Western values. He himself is a product of the British high education. Combining the best of Western culture and Eastern culture is perhaps Singapore's greatest strength. Mainland China is not the same, though he would ideally hoped for.

What I now think Singapore needs is to find a way to break into the world of international pop culture, boost its soft power. I never thought about it before until I saw people online talk about it but Singapore is the only Asian Tiger without an influential pop culture industry. Hong Kong has its martial arts films and Cantopop, South Korea has the Korean Wave and Taiwan has the Taiwanese Wave. Singapore, so far, has nothing. I was thinking Singapore may make a name for itself within the hip hop industry, especially with the way Yung Raja caught the attention of some in the US, but so far his rise has been limited. Netflix's Singapore Social had a little traction but nothing crazy. Crazy Rich Asians, while set in Singapore, did very little to Singapore apart from flopping hard in the country and being criticised. I noticed some non-Asian Westerners are watching those Singaporean Wattpad dramas on KZbin but Singapore's soft power is not great when it comes to media. I see people say negative things about Singapore like "Singapore's a dictatorship" and "Singabore". Investment in media would help Singapore's image in the way it has for Hong Kong and South Korea.

Australia in late 80s,90s have great leaders, it could have become another conservative like Argentina or worst, stricken with the resource curse. Its good that they share the resource wealth with its people but resources are finite. If you look at the exports of Australia from OEC, its dangerously brown. Healthy economies like Singapore , Japan, SK, China, Taiwan, Israel, Germany, GB, France, Netherlands and United States all have rainbow colors and will be relatively stable and last for a long time because theres always demand for their higher tier top of the manufacturing chain. Every country above exports its specialized tech overseas and does Aus have state of the art technology that the world wants and isn't available elsewhere? LKW words may not be true for now but still lingers on as theres a high risk that all Aus needs is a conservative leader that suddenly dont feel the need to invest in its people to gain wealth and what we left is brain drain and a population that lack the skills to compete in higher tech exports when the resources drops in value or run out. High tech exports that everybody wants cant be dug up overnight. It takes decades of investment in r&d, education and lots of dedicated learning experience
@AussieRooAdventures2 жыл бұрын
You are kidding right. They signed the lima agreement in the 70s getting rid of our manufacturing....in the 90s they signed Australia over to the globalists....we are a corporation not a sovereign country. We have been governed off shore by the globalists for decades. Traitors...all of them. Everyone in parliament knows. And they are rife with paedophiles . Suppressed by Howard for 99 years.

Australia plays to its competitive strengths - mining, agriculture, higher education, health care, tourism, high living standards and a stable environment for property investment. There is room for improvement (eg. green energy and value adding by processing mineral resources) but high wages do not allow it to compete as a manufacturing hub. High tech exports can be fleeting - Japanese TVs for example have been largely displaced by Korean competition.

A good summary. When LKY predicts disaster and the leader of the country changes course, you have countries like Australia & China becoming rich & powerful. Leaders who ignore LKY's advice? Well, good examples in the video. Why will LKY be vilified you ask? If people like (Famous Amos) Yee becoming leader of Singapore and changing the history books. Although I suspect world history books will see him as the benign dictator. SO why did he do the things he did? To ensure Singapore can grow with as few political disasters as possible. Once Singapore is on her own 2 feet and her people (my comrades) have formed a strong bond internally to weather outside cultural/political influence, PAP will loosen the grip on social-economical control. LKY is not afraid to say that he's wrong on certain policies and reverse course on them (eg., split from Malaysia.) I've never known him to save face or self-indulge or tell outright lies. Reading the data (both global & local) and forming local & foreign affairs policies based on these data is why the Singapore government is successful. We don't subscribe to a fixed ideology. 2 children policy causing pre-mature demography collapse? Change it! Malaysia threatening to cut our water supply? Research cheaper water reclamation & desalination technology. Moving to green energy but Lithium batteries has reached storage limits and Singapore has no place to stick solar panels & wind farms & tons of batteries? Research Green Hydrogen to continue Internal Combustion Engine. How I wish Singapore will go into nuclear, especially since a closed-cycle nuclear plant can help water desalination or produce green hydrogen.

I totally agree. Because of Taiwan's geostrategic position, it's actually of a great interest for many countries around and for the US. There is also the high-end semi-conductors issue, but China and other countries are trying their best to reach Taiwan's level, so we don't know how long this argument will last. I wonder if Ukraine's war has shown the world what a conflict could cause for the economy. It would be the same for Taiwan. If China takes over Taiwan, their will be a shift in sea control in the area, undermining many countries economic and military positions.
