I was working for military Intelligence in 1985. I was drafted for them in 1984 and started as an antitank instructor on one of the 11 training bases. I can relate to some of the stories he told. In 1985 a Col. Snyman was in command there and when we finally got to Rundu, he called us in and said to us "You will be training UNITA and you can leave now if you don't want to do this, but if you do, you will work in our environment until you leave the army". Two left the room. The rest got loaded on a Samil 100 and driven down the golden Highway and into Angola. We got dropped and the driver left. No explanation of what to do or where we are. It was days before we knew what was going on there. It was an amazing experience and not something you can forget.

Great episode ... Andrew had me laughing my head off with some of his stories! Sorry that he and the colonel's relationship came apart despite Andrew doing the right thing! That's how it is I'm afraid ... sometimes we do the right thing and have everyone against us! Good man.

...and all the brass sighed a huge sigh of relief the moment Andrew cleared out - he evidently was a greater threat to the SADF and caused more damage than the enemy itself... ;-) :-)

Hi. Was there in 1981 to 1984. That time we had many more officers and we had left the quadrado for our own base at the old ammo depot. We had ID cards that stopped people from stopping us or interfering with our operations.

Absolutely wonderful interview. Hell of a commitment secure truck , refuel truck and escape. Most would have waited for Seniors to return . I guess this is why he was selected for the position. Modern Jock of the Bushveld could be written ?
