Legend is an amazing book and David Gemmell will always be right at the very top of authors I’d recommend to any reader. His portrayal of flawed heroes and anti heroes gives his characters so much more depth than the traditional protagonists you find in your typical sword-and-sorcery. I first read this nearly 40 years ago and have read it a number of times since. It’s a shame Gemmell doesn’t have a bigger fan base, his catalogue is filled with absolute bangers, including the Rigante series. Word of warning, while the Drenai saga is fantastic, the second book (King Beyond The Gate) isn’t his best work and can be skipped for Waylander which is one of his absolute best.
