Carnera was a circus strongman controlled by the mob. He had few real boxing skills. Virtually all his early fights were fixed. Baer was a clown but when he took things seriously he was a devastating puncher who killed a man in the ring. He may have had the best right hand of any heavyweight in history.

Please look it up if you doubt me -- Primo Carnera holds the KO record in the heavyweight division. Few come close. If you count light heavyweight bouts Ezzard Charles might edge him out. But in the heavyweight division exclusively from 1928-1946 -- Primo had 103 fights - 89 wins - 72 knockouts - 14 losses (he was only stopped 5 times by TKO, lost 7 times to decision & 2 disqualifications). During his prime years, Primo was stopped but never knocked out. They list his 5 losses as KO but his record shows it was actually all TKO (technical knockouts), fights that were stopped. He was never out on his feet or counted out on the mat -- because he kept getting up & coming back with both hands loaded. Takes guts. He also probably had the best naturally cut body in boxing. He was not a weight lifter or a professional bodybuilder. he also had an 85" reach. He just lacked finesse & skills but he had power, determination & stamina. Joe Louis said Primo hit hard with every punch and had a good jab. Despite losing to a far better-skilled boxer in Max Baer, Primo got in many good shots. But he was a bit awkward at times. By the way, Max Baer lost in 4 rounds to Joe Louis. Primo lasted 6 rounds. A testament to the courage and ability that Primo indeed had but many won't acknowledge.

Max Bear was a different fighter after the death of one of his opponents , Frankie Campbell, in 1930. Campbell never regained consciousness after Baer gave him a severe beating in the ring. Max Baer was distraught after Campbell’s death . Max was arrested and even faced manslaughter charges , which were later dropped. After that he became more of a showman and clowned about a lot in the ring . I remember reading that when he beat Primo Carnera in 1934 , the ltalian needed hospital treatment . Max would often visit Primo to make sure he was recovering .

@justthink5854 That would fit. He just seemed a good guy. He was very charismatic . I think at some time in the future they should make a biopic about Max. People saying Carnera couldn't box are overreacting to him being hurt. He got caught with a few shots and couldn't stand up to Baer's power, but Primo actually was the more effective agressor for most of this fight, using his jab effectively to score and continually coming forward. Baer was a tough customer.

This was just about the craziest pro fight I've ever seen. When he wasn't being dumped on his backside at regular intervals, Primera COMPLETELY outboxed Baer. Primera only seems to need blowing on to fall over and despite his great jabbing skill, his punches don't seem to have any power. Baer seems to have no skill whatsoever and spends his entire time trying to land the right-hand knockout. Half the time here, he was so unbalanced, he fell on top of Primera after or during throwing a punch. Baer was sure a one-off and most of the time seemed to be talking, clowning or pulling his shorts up, with no thoughts of defence. Though the fight seemed very amateurish, it was great entertainment.

Carnera had a heart as gigantic as the bossom it inhabited. He would not stay down or quit despite receiving hellacious punishment. Baer was just too powerful for anykne to stand and trade with. The trouble with Baer he didnt take boxing seriously or train hard enough for fights after a certain point. The death of Frankie Campbell took a lot out of Baers killer instinct and he begen to clown in fights, sparing his opponents with his comedic expressions and giving them time to recover. He let guys off the hook when they were in trouble he didnt have the icy Joe Louis instincts of seek and destroy against a hurt opppnent, few could match the Brown Bomber for that nor many of his phenomenal qualities which exceeded everyone then. This was a time when the world heavyweight belt switched hands many times in a short period in the 1930s.. this ended with Braddock who beat Baer and who was himself koed by a Joe Louis right hand.
