I have Michelin cross climates which are a step below snow tires and I was stuck in a parking spot facing uphill. Buddy's car was parked behind mine so I couldn't get momentum. But had to dig enough to get snow cables on the front. I think if I had momentum and wasn't on a narrow incline, I would've been ok.

From what I've read, the subaru traction control system gets activated when it detects one wheel spinning faster than the other wheel on same axle, it then needs a few seconds of slowly spinning wheels so that the opposite wheel gets power too. I'm pretty sure it uses the ABS system to transfer torque by applying enough brake pressure to spinning wheel but not enough to stop the spinning wheel so torque gets transferred to the wheel that is doing nothing. Ultimately, all 4 wheels will be powered. The system just needs a few seconds of tire spinning to allow it's system to work. Try it.

The best Subaru I had in winter weather was a 2000 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport wagon with 5-spd manual transmission. I don't think these newer Subarus have gotten any better, and are probably worse. We have a 2008 Outback and a 2012 Impreza. They are good in the snow, but not in the same class as the older Subaru we had. These newer Subarus, you do yourself a huge favor if you install a slightly taller snow tire or all terrain tires for the winter.
@WS1024 жыл бұрын
The newer cars are stiffer, have better rollover protection, 2 different X-Mode settings and improved traction control. They're actually much better in the snow. I have a new Outback and new Impreza 5 door. They are far better than my early 90's Legacy LS and previous Subaru models.
@joeweaver99134 жыл бұрын
@@WS102 With all the snow recently, I certainly have no complaints about how our Subarus have performed in it. One thing I liked about the old Subaru was that it seemed to split the power more evenly between front and rear. The '08 Outback has AT and the '12 Impreza has CVT, and they both seem to send more power to the front wheels
@WS1024 жыл бұрын
@@joeweaver9913 It was nice having a center diff lock and the ability to hammer the gas and spin your way out. It worked well at times, but I think the X-Mode is a better solution in that it manages the car really well in all sorts of different conditions.
@joeweaver99134 жыл бұрын
@@WS102 neither of our cars have x-mode, but hopefully the next one will :)
@WS1024 жыл бұрын
@@joeweaver9913 It's a nice feature and the newer models even have a 2 stage X-Mode for Gravel and Snow, or for Deep Snow and Mud. The car will brake wheels that spin and send power to the ones that have traction to carefully walk the car out. If that doesn't work, the new X-Mode allows you to turn off the Traction Control and just hammer it like the traditional older models. The last few years haven't allowed that, so they made it possible for the cars to work that way if needed.

This is where manual transmission 4x4s shine. Because you can rock back and forth so much better than auto just by keeping it in first and giving blips of gas and then letting the car roll back until you have a couple feet of run up. Most of the time you just need like a foot because the snow isn’t that much deeper than you expected but it works wonders in even the worst situations though, just remember not to undo all your progress with too much gas pedal 😂

No, the Subaru traction control system needs to be on so that it can detect wheel spin and apply power to the wheels not spinning. My Crosstrek already has all-weather AT tires and a multi-mount winch. I've had it less than a year. Traction mats and a rear locker for just a few hundred $$ are coming soon. With just an affordable 4500lb winch, a little Subaru can conquer stuff that will strand the pickup that was in the video...while still getting 30+MPG commuting.

Actually Subaru awd is gas pig and hard to get 30mpg. Maybe freeway but definitely not city with AT tires. This lack of gas supply sure screws us over for AWd vehicles.
@RKmndo Жыл бұрын
@@MrMannyhw I can get mid-30s MPG pretty regularly in warm weather, with skids and 225/60R17 AT Trails on a 2016 2.slo/CVT Crosstrek. I use cruise and a cotton high-flow airfilter. I used to average high-30s to mid-40s with the stock 225/55R17s and the cotton airfilter. My best tank averaged over 46MPG. That's better than what a FWD Corolla hatch is rated for hwy. Check your airfilter, sparkplugs, injectors, and driving style if you aren't getting over 30MPG at 65MPH or less in warm weather. Remove any rooftop accessories. Cold weather can also affect MPG, due to rich running when cold, lower tire pressures, thicker tranny/diff fluids when cold, and winter-blend gas. Most non-hybrid cars sold in the USA won't get 30MPG+ in city driving.

That's likely a matter of snow conditions or having all season tires instead of snow tires.
