4/15 Monday
4:30am:
Opened my laptop, account was de activated. Thought it was just another IT problem, so didn't think anything of it.
5:00am
I usually check my emails while on my autopilot commute to work (1hr 30min drive)
Email read: "Unfortunately as a result, your position has been eliminated by this restructuring."
5:05am
Texted my manager, but he said "everyone got it, we'll get more info later"
5:50am
Tried to badge in, and the security guard took my badge and told me I was laid off
6:00am
Sat in my car in disbelief.
Tesla timeline:
07/22/2019 - 04/15/2024
About 5 years at Tesla. Half a decade!
At one point in 2023 I was even sacrificing sleeping in my car on work days just to avoid commuting to work. Showered at the factory and slept in the parking lot. Microwaved dinner in the break room.
Sacrificed a lot for the company. But this is just a small part of a chapter that is ending, and there’s a whole book waiting to be written. I’m only 29 years old and have a lot more career time in me.
I went from Production Associate, to Lead Production Associate, to being a Production Supervisor. Starting from the very bottom and worked my way up. Learned a lot of adapting to the ever-changing environment, to working with less but getting more done.
In the middle of my career, when I was a lead, I met the most funny and humble supervisor named Louie Afusia. Louie taught me about delegating, following up, and finishing through. He used to tell me: “listen to the people, not against them.” I even played semi pro football with him one Spring season. But he taught me a lot about leadership, and i’m glad to have met him in my career at Tesla. He was this huge Somoan USO, that had a good heart.
Louie passed away in 02/2023. He’s gone, but not forgotten.
How you make something last forever is you inspire the next generation and then the next. Always leave the place better than you found it.
One thing Tony Stark (Ironman) said in the movie Avengers Endgame:
“Part of the journey is the end”

I’m a retired attorney. Enjoy the last few years and MAKE SURE you have cultivated something to suck up all the hours and hours of time you’ll have on your hands. Something that doesn’t involve alcohol, preferably. I now play the guitar, sew, garden, walk the dog, and spend waaaayyyy too much time on youtube! 😂 And yes, I’m a guy - fabric and flowers haven’t been only for girls for decades. Fun to go out in sweats and t-shirts that I made myself. Especially when I get compliments. 😊

That's every company though, we are all just numbers. I learned this early on in life. They will lay you off in a heartbeat and not bat an eyelash or lose a minute of sleep about it. I feel genuinely very sorry for people who clearly dedicated themselves to a job, only to be treated this way. The ugly truth is that... the security guard at the door who wouldn't let you in, likely cared far more about you being laid off than the person who chose to lay you off. You deserve better. We all do. And there's nothing wrong with saying so. Wish you all the best.

However he died wealthy and mom passed completely broke or damn near. I don't mind sharing just don't want to be "used" like many men are today. A friendly advise from an almost 30years veteran in the auto industry: NEVER assume next week will be like this week and things will be "normal" forever. ALWAYS assume bad things will happen and go vernment is there to screw you. YOUR PRIORITY should be YOU and your family. With that in mind, based on what I have learned in almost 30 years: 1 - Don't waste the $ you make working in depreciating things (like a car), INVEST your $ on things that will bring PASSIVE INCOME in order to achieve a passive income that is greater than your salary as soon as possible. 2 - Work on yourself in order that you will have your own business, if they are paying you $120K/year it is because what you produce with your work is worth way more so why not keep all the $ for yourself? 3 - Be prepared for bad times (lay offs, high inflation, diseases, accidents, etc). 4 - If you need to finance something that means YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT.

My younger brother lived in his truck with a camper cover on it in San Francisco for a year. He bought a membership at a 24hr gym so he could park his truck over night and shower without being hassled. He later bought an old sailboat for less than $10k that came with a slip. Slip rent was $300 a month. You weren't allowed to stay on the boat over night, but he would. So, there are options out there especially if you're single. He lived on the sail boat for several years. I have a mechanic/electrician coworker that moved from SoCal to NorCal. Left his family at LA while he worked (Not gonna say which 24-hour production company I work for, but it makes millions of dollars a day on a rotating shift schedule. Overtime Hours are absolutely absurd, you can pretty much work as many OT if you wish). So the guy camped in his car for 14 straight weeks, working 16 hours a day (double shift), that’s right, 110 days straight days working 16 hours each day while camped in the parking lot, took his showers at the factory and ate in town. He finally moved his entire family when he a got house. Talk about sacrifice and determination. But if you think that’s crazy, I have another coworker that worked 16hours a day for more than 200 consecutive days! His only advantage was his home is less than 1 mile from the factory. He could have worked 365 days straight if he wished. It’s actually normal for employees to camp at my work, I myself on a 3day stay instead of wasting 2 hours drive back and forth. It’s tough, but when you see that massive check each week supporting your family, it’s a great feeling and amazing accomplishment.

The whole factory and support business all shut down destroying central New York. At the time I had a young wife and 3 kids. I was devastated 😳. A month after, I visited my cousin in Los Angeles for a few weeks, scouting for work. The 1st day I found a job making 2.5 x the salary I was making in New York. I quickly moved my family to LA. My wife, family and friends were sad we were moving but you couldn’t get a job even delivering pizza 🍕 in upstate New York at this time. Today all is well, my kids are grown and successful, I’m retired, still working part time and enjoying life in with everyone in beautiful Southern California. Get a new job ASAP move to the work as you always need Cash Flow, the life blood of living today. Love and Blessings brother ❤️🙏😎

The moral of the story is DO NOT CAMP IN THE PARKING LOT AT YOUR JOB. Rent a room, get a studio, get a roommate, or sleep at a shelter-anything except sleeping in your company's parking lot. It does not matter if you're in an expensive vehicle and hold a decent job title.

I am 66 years old. Commuted 2.5 hours every day into Chicago for over 30 years. If you want to get ahead of the rest, you gotta do it. You have a good attitude and we're very professional not to knock Tesla. Things change with companies and tough decisions are made. The least favorite part of my job was closing offices. But all those people ended up with better positions. You will do fine. You have a great attitude and demeanor. Stay positive. I am not sure that living in your car is the answer. And only 5 years in the market is not going to make you wealthy. That's takes a much longer time and that money you invested is the very last thing you touch. You don't want to live on it unless you're forced to. Find a place that you can afford and try and have three-six months of cash in the bank in case something happens again. And it probably will. It's the world we live in. Live within your means. I am seeing to many people buying homes, and cars that they really don't need. My first mortgage interest rate was around 14% back in the 80's. So I bought what I could afford. Keep up that smile and attitude, you'll land on your feet. Nothing comes easy in life! ❤

It doesn't work that way anymore. College debt, housing prices & cost of living have made that dream a thing of the past. Skip college, learn a trade. Be your own boss & Gen Z's, you'll have a better shot. But don't buy into boomer propaganda that keeps you in a hamster wheel. And why would you want to go to college when the university presidents are calling in the cops to beat students when they protest their university dollars supporting genocide?

As a 69-year-old guy, I can tell you it has always been tough for most people. I was from Detroit where people were always getting laid off. You just have to decide what is most important to you, and right now you are young so you may not know yet. Housing and bills have always been there but I think there are more options now for people. You can buy or build a small place off the grid and still have the comforts of life. I lived and traveled in a van camper for over a year and it was great. I wasn't working during that time so it was like a long vacation. Good Luck...

My son is a mining engineering student. My advice to him (and now to you even though you didn't ask 😂) is finish school, get a job, live below your means, save, invest, travel, meet many people from all walks of life, stay out of unnecessary debt and buy a house. If you ever get laid off or feel the need to quit a job you hate then it will be very easy to do. At the very end of the list is getting together with someone. Make sure your goals align and think very hard about whether ypu want a traditional lady or modern girl. Do Your best and forget the rest. You got this

Thanks for telling your story. You will succeed in life because you have never give up positive attitude and are dedicated to what ever you do. Tesla on your resume will open doors for you. I am in the finance field and worked in Silicon Valley for about five years, it was a great experience, it was all good, even the tough times. For a couple of years, I lived in an RV sometimes parked next to Google headquarters, although I did not work at Google. I prepped food at work, took advantage of the free meals that the employer offered from time to time and ate the left overs and showered at the company. I also was laid off a couple of times, but I always found work and eventually got into better positions. After being laid off during the 2008 economic crash, I moved to the Sacramento area for temporary work. When that term finished, I moved to LA. Then I moved back to Silicon Valley for a few years. Now I am in a senior financial reporting position living in LA but working remote for a company in San Diego.
