It's really just looking at it intensively. Normal shops won't do it because labor hour BS. You need a specialist who's not losing money to dive deep. Most shops have to be profitable at every corner. Figuring out retard engine swap dilemmas are not usually profitable. Most vehicle owners freak out over insane D&D figures.

Alex. Thanks so much for all your content. It's really appreciated. As a fellow 996 owner but in the UK, I would suggest removing the front bumper and checking for debris between the aircon condensers (if it still has them) and the radiators. This can detrimentally affect cooling performance if it's all blocked up. Just a thought.

You definitely want to use a vacuum airlift tool to fill the coolant in this. Also, that looks like a factory oil pan, you're going to want to remove it and make sure it's got baffling/oil trap doors to keep the oil around the pick up tube. You can add a third, center radiator to these pretty easily using Porsche parts. It'd be awesome to see you put PS and AC back in it and restore full factory functionality to everything

Mechanical engineer here and I used to work for AST, 2011-2013 I think it was. I can vouch for the cost of the dampers, they were pretty close to top-of-the-line. If you ever have issues with them I have a contact in Dallas who is very familiar with them. Enjoy the car, it looks like a really fun project!

Alex this car is awsome! It very important to swap out the oil pan. The stock LS one can’t handle the backwards pressure which contributes on oil starvation in the engine. This is the exact reason Hoovies blew his LS 911 engine. Cool car hope the project continues!

Great to see a Porsche on the channel. My 992 has a glove box like normal cars, but also the engine temp also sits around 190-212 or so depending what you are doing. That’s a Porsche engine, but still…. Also, the fans always run after your shut the engine off to push all the the heat out. So there could be a timer there

Yep. Look for a DC 12v PLC Relay Multifunction Timer Module. They cost about $5-8. You can feed it with power from the battery and it can use the keyswitch as a trigger; when keyswitch OFF, run for x seconds after.

Make sure you have the proper oil pan at high speeds if your using the stock oil pan it will starve for oil and lock up the motor . The oil pan needs a baffle in it to keep the oil from splashing backwards creating oil starvation. Love the content keep up the great work .

Hey Alec Make sure the oil pans been rigged up right for this application as its not listed in the modification list you show, and put the right way round for the midengined design layout, as it grenaded Hoovies multiple times from that, and it needs a baffled oil pan set the right way round for the pickup with the way the G's are set in this, as its happened multiple times with cars like this IE Porsche LS's and Detomaso's, which were basically a poor man's ford GT40 in the old days, complete with the headbangingly low roof and no Gurney Bubble, as you cant just throw a V8 in here with a normal wet sump without making sure its rigged up properly to keep the oil pressure in check hence why so many italian cars go dry sump, as its much easier and reliable to have it fed via a reservior and a pump in a different location to keep the oil flowing under high G cornering and its one of the things one of the owners of the Ford GT knock off Lee Iocca brought in went into on the video titled Longterm Affair: Jim Demick and his DeTomaso Pantera and there was even a guy on a testarossa video in canada who talked of Corvette C4's failing when trackdaying from the same thing, which is probably why accusumps exist to keep the pressure up even on pre LS GM V8's and other muscle cars that are being trackdayed and thrown around like that. if they dont have a deeper baffled oil pan in to keep the pressure and flow going, something that also happens on a 20 million dollar car currated sells for way over price hence why he doesnt drive it even though his father loved to do just that, the miura, italy's ultimate kitcar, which didnt have a drysump until the SV, with both the crank and the engine sharing the same oil supply. funny how being a lamborghini and muscle car guy kinda goes together really, but hey where did dodge go to get the 360 V8 prototype V10 truck engine, with two extra bangers put on and enlarged to 8 liters lightened abit for use in the Viper?

Nice!! Reminds me of a sweet deal I got on decent condition 1996 MB SL320 for ~$3k. They couldn’t figure out how to fix the fans so they gave up. I took a look at the relays and they had a BMW relay plugged in for the fans 🙃 The pins lined up, but the power pin was in a totally different spot on the BMW relay compared to the factory Mercedes one. $20 for a new factory relay and everything was working like normal. This was about 8 months ago. I’ve been daily driving my SL320 since then and it’s running flawlessly.

Nobody wants to work on hacked together junk like this. They likely barely tried at all, billed him for some money and shoved it outside. This car is a hacked together ruined pos now and barely worth scrap. It is also likely dangerous to drive as the Porshe designed weight balance and handling are all completely screwed now so who knows what bad tendencies this pos has on the road, let alone during any aggressive driving.

The LS is likely lighter than the original power plant, which would improve the weight balance of the car. Using your logic, no one should ever modify a car in any way.

If I got another LS car (I've had 3) I would get a roller body and then do a 5.3L with an upgraded top end refresh designed for boost and then get a pair of used turbos to rebuild. And I always say to use link bar lifters in an LS

Alex, you’re still not using those connectors right. The soldier needs to be basically shiny, meaning it’s melted ALL the way. You’re barely letting it get pliable and you’re removing the heat. It’s a weak connection and will erode much sooner than it should. It’s a good connection once the soldier starts to seep into the wires. By the way, you’re building my literal dream car. A Porsche 6 sp wide body with an LS motor in it. 😳 So, I’ll be following along for sure. Awesome, unique car. I had cool cars in the military, but some things happened and I ended up not having such cool cars, and now my health has me lookin’ at the short end of life, so if I can’t build/buy my dream car, I can at least watch you build it. 😊

Put in a fan relay to protect the thermostatic switch from the fan load and allow it to be controlled safely from the ignition switch. Remove the worthless pusher fans as they are actually blocking ram air. Without interfering with the radiator area (new space) install the engine oil cooler but install a thermostatically controlled bypass to avoid overcooling the oil. Those pusher fans were probably puller type and wired backwards so the blades were “stalled” but you may be able to use one fan for the oil cooler. Get a rear sump(rear of car) oil pan asap or face oil starvation (probably too late).

The fans running when the engine off is a good thing because it will bring down the temp instead of rising. The fans will shut off at a safe temp. Some of the older Hondas worked that way.

Porsche LSC is already off to a good start, i think you are right the pusher fans are obstructing the cooling capabilities of the radiators. I think a supercharger might be in order to go with the spicy cam...

I once owned a red 88 Carrera with a "tail" and no mechanical problems, just minor easy to fix problems. It served me well for 10 summers. Air cool engine is pure and simple. My retired Porsche specialist preferred to work on the carburetor engines and he would convert them if he wanted some fun

You asked so I will say. I often watch people like you who work on cars the proper way. I have never really put a car on 4 jack stands and completed any really in depth work on a car. I recently bought a 3rd car that was cheap and had some minor issues with the intent of having something to work on and learn without fear. I recently replaced the clutch by myself on the floor and added some other parts to have more fun at the track. People like you infected me with a bug to wrench on cars. The story goes that the key is on the left because when performing a la man’s start you can jump in turn the car on with the left hand and engage the 1st gear with the right hand.

Why not just engage to 1st gear when the car is off then turn the key on (with clutch fully depress) once its on, release the clutch then throttle? My 97 lancer can do this, you can sometimes even forgot that its on 1st gear while turning on (I usually engage either 1st or reverse when parking on slope roads) it just stalls as the hand break is engaged.

Great troubleshooting, Alex! If I were the former owner, I'd be miffed at the shops that could not diagnose, much less fix the problem. The shops then got the former owner to add parts that were completely useless. So let's compare. Previous shops: 1) Utter fail at diagnosing the problem followed by 2) weak parts cannon. Alex: 1) proper diagnosis followed by 2) removing unnecessary parts, leading to 3) a no-parts added solution.

I would definitely delete the pusher fans and then test to see whether the OEM fans alone are sufficient. I may have missed some of the details on the aftermarket fan wiring, but I'd also consider trying to bring the OEM two stage fan system back to stock and deleting/not using the aftermarket temp sensor, if that's possible.

I was a drivability specialist at my local chevrolet dealer for a few years back when the gen 4 Corvette came out.(1983-1986.) And i used to get calls for outside jobs from people who could not fix these types of problems in cars that were worked on by others and given up on.

All the ways and techniques you show us are great. I have added some of that knowledge to my arsenal of vehicle repair. Also, since you asked. I'm currently working on a 2007 Magnum SRT8. I'm looking into the best bang for my buck on exhaust.

Find some SS longtube headers. If you don't live somewhere that does smog testing then get catless mids and xpipe. If you have smog testing get high flow cats and xpipe. Then go on summit racing or jegs and get 2 bullet style mufflers or resonators of your choice. Install the longtubes, mids, and xpipe yourself. Take the resonators or mufflers to your local family owned exhaust shop and have them finish installing them along with the rest of the tubing. Usually it's about $200 for the shop to install the mufflers and make the rest of the custom tubing. If you are going to make over 500hp go with a 3 inch exhaust. If you won't go over 500hp go with a 2.5 inch exhaust

Very cool Alex.... I think you got a good deal on this one. Someone else had one that kept having oiling issues that killed the LS. It was used on a track and cornering G's caused oil starvation. I really enjoyed this first episode.

I am not much of a revhead. I have never owned a sports car but admire their beauty and technology gone into their production. But one thing I have always believed is you never tamper with the standard technology built into a car. A car, the motor, transmission, brakes, tyres, suspension etc., everything that makes a car run has been designed by very clever technicians. If you do something to give it more power you then have to rework everything else to cope with that power, including stronger transmission, clutch, brakes, tyres and suspension. I have never done any modifications to any of the cars I have owned. This story of someone interfering with the cooling system of a very expensive sports car is a good reason just to leave well enough alone.

I'm currently just waiting to get the new year started really, I'll start my new education January 16th, as a truck-mechanic (vehicles over 7.700 lbs / 3.500 kg). The Gen 1 996 cars didn’t have a glove box, so yes the owners manual went in that slot under the steering wheel. They did add a glove box for the Gen 2 996’s. Also it’s common to need to clean out debris between the radiators and AC condensers, which requires removing the front bumper cover. Sweet video 😊

Porsche added the glove box with the facelift of the 996 (among other things like different fenders to accompany the clear lens headlights - the Boxster kept the runny egg yellow indicators in the front until the end though, therefore 996 facelift fenders are rarer used and more expensive). For the model year you have, the way to keep the owners manual seems genuine. The facelift also added two cupholders (although many Porsche owners only know of one because they never realized they can pull it out to revear a second one) underneath the middle air vents. As well as dozens of other small changes (electronic throttle, electronic hood releases front and back etc...)

Change your mindset man. Don't think it's doubtful that you will ever get a car this nice....tell yourself that you will make it happen every morning you wake up. After only a couple weeks you will start to believe it. Then you will start thinking along the lines of what your plan needs to be to make it happen

Hard to be positive when your in such pain constantly. My dad when I was a kid had some Porsche's but we weren't on good terms so I never got to go in them.

That's awesome you got the fans figured out so quickly! Can I recommend when you wire them to the ignition, you do so through a timed delay off relay? It's not out of the ordinary for the fans to run a little while after the ignition is off, if it needs it.

When you have a new engine overheating during idling. But cool when you're driving. It's definitely a indication that you have a air flow problem. Not a coolant flow problem. That's a big deal as long as you check the gases in the coolant and make sure you haven't blown Head gasket. Those aluminum engines like to Warp when they get hot or even warm.

I’ve got a 996c4. The fans for the front rads are 2 speed and both come on together and ramp up together. Porche turbo has an extra rad and fan in the middle at the front as well.

I admire you knowledge of the electrical system of the car and your electrical knowledge. I realize this video doesn't show the labor and research time you spent on this car, but after you get everything properly connected electrically go back and clean up the non-factory wiring. As it appears the additional fans and related wiring is a total hack job. Make additional electrical look professional and the car will sell for at least 10k more than your purchase price. I'd love to see a video of the car after the exhaust and electrical system is completed!!

Good job solving the over heating problem. Weird how the Porsche looks clearly yellow in the thumbnail, and I hate yellow on (most) cars, but that Tan/Beige might be even worse. I wouldn't want a car the color of my skin. If it was mine I'd definitely get rid of all the beige inside and out eventually or sell it.

Working on a 2013 ford focus. Had a weird engine fault and transmission failure codes. Tracked it down to a wiring issues somewhere. Ripped out the aftermarket car starter that was half assed tossed togather in there. Codes went away and doesnt seem to be a issue. Drives and shifts good. Couple more items to fix before I clean it up for sale
