The trans is totally fine, the issue is the lift kit. It’s a fairly small and inexpensive lift. The nicer ones come with spacers for the belly pan. When you drop the belly pan it will tilt the transmission and then it will shift into 2nd gear without any issues and also it will fix the driveline angle. If you really want to take it off road you need to look at getting one that has longer lower control arms etc. check out Rubicon Express. You should also sell those upgraded Dana 30/35 axles and then buy a pair of Dana 44’s from a Rubicon. They are much stronger and you can pick them up for a fraction of what was spent on those OX lockers. Which is an Alex way to go, sell the parts that came on the car and replace them with stronger, OEM ones and make money from selling the old parts.

I know the Dana 44 is a super solid option. Due to the 4.0 not being as much HP as the V8 (even though the torque is there), is the 30/35 possibly a better ratio for the available power? I don't know anything about gearing, that's why I'm asking.

Unfortunately, not head studs. They do use a few 12 point fasteners throughout. As for the 11 mm valve cover bolts, they are said to be 7/16 head.. Tomato, tomato.. This is the Gen 3 4.0 which was redesigned in for 99 and isn't as reliable as previous editions. Known for head cracks (0331 head) and fragile pistons. Usually #5 or 6 piston shattering. The heat shield that was under the fuel rail is to prevent heat soak in the heat. It will boil the fuel in rail and cause misfires, starting issues, and loss of power. Old spark plug wire boots make good replacements for the pcv boot. Check out my death wobble video for a quick understanding.

I own and have built my Jeep. The synchros on second gear go out regularly. That is a typical fix. I had to do mine. You have OX lockers both front and rear. They are a good cable actuated locker. Your head is in a sick configuration. I would recommend you install a slip yoke eliminater (sye) kit in the transfer case then you can eliminate the transfer case spacers. This gets the power train back in the stock location. This moves the shifter back until the stock position and makes getting into reverse easier. You will have to buy a new drive line with the slip yoke in it. You will now have u-jounts at both ends so if you are on the trail and have a problem with the rear drive line you can remove it and still drive out. You have a solid start.

For anyone else watching who is afraid of rusted framed jeeps. Don't be. I bought a 2000 TJ with 120k miles for 4k. The frame was rusted as bad, if not worse, than the first jeep in this video. BUT it had Dana 44 axles front and rear, front and rear lockers (same brand as Alex's yellow jeep), and a 6in lift. I bought frame repair kits and paid a welder 1k in labor to install them. I took the jeep through some wild terrain that I didn't think was possible. Rusted frames are not the end all be all. After a few years, I sold that jeep to by a Foxbody Mustang. Then I found Alex's channel when he was removing a Fox's fuel tank. Thanks Alex for your help and videos!

TJ frames rot from the inside out because they didn’t have factory drain holes. Always check the inside of the frame with an endoscope. Regarding lift height, measure the springs while the Jeep is on the ground under its own weight. Anything over 12” (stock) the front and 8” (stock) the rear is your lift height. The Dana 35 and 30 need upgraded chromoly shafts when running a locker and larger tires (33”+), if you plan to go Offroad at all. Otherwise, the stock shafts are not long for this world. Hopefully, the receipts or PO’s can confirm upgraded shafts when installing the gears and lockers. Steering stabilizers are not the cause of death wobble. They only mask the root issue(s), which are typically tire balance, worn track bar end components, or upper axle side control arm bushings. Currie Correctlink is the preferred choice for tie rod /drag link set up on lifted wranglers. Make sure to stay away from drop pitman arms and track bar relocation brackets that cause your track bar and drag link to no longer be parallel.

Ditch that D shaft balancer, and grab yourself a slip yoke eliminator kit. That gives you better drive shaft angles with a double cardan joint. As long as they replaced the C-clip style axle shaft, you should be ok on that front, but the tubes are thin and you can wind up with a smiley face axle on the front with larger tires. I'd keep that 3550 over the 6 speed, it's pretty solid tranny👍

Regarding all the rusted frames, I worked at the Arizona DOT in Flagstaff (on I-40) for some 27 years. When I retired, the standard salt usage was 300 pounds per lane per mile, per application, and the salt trucks ran non-stop during snowstorms (and average snowfall is 108 inches per year). A lot of people from Phoenix regularly come up to Flagstaff to ski, so don't count on finding rust-free rigs in Arizona!

Replace the oil pan, and the rear main seal while it's out. There is a main ground on the engine near the oil filter. You may need to cut and get to fresh wiring, common green crusty area. Watch out for cracks in the frame near the control arm brackets that are welded to frame. Check the track bar bushing/joint while on the ground, have someone crank the steering wheel hard back and forth, watch the bushing and joint near pitman arm, common death wobble area. Death wobble will/can also be caused by wheel bearings, ball joints and control arm bushings. Flip the hood and lean it on the roof, gives better lighting lol Don't put stupid ducks in the windshield...just don't Forgot something, shock mounts might need to be drilled out from rust. I didn't see, but that transfer case skid plate should probably be dropped and have some spacers put in for better geometry on the driveline

As for death wobble, it is NEVER the steering dampener. Dampener just prevents or lessens bump steer. Start with checking the ball joints, tie rods ends then control arms and trackbar for ANY kind of looseness whatsoever. What "doesn't seem too bad" will often cause your death wobble.

I know it's not a jeep, but on my 1979 Subaru a bad steering coupler/rag joint definitely caused death wobble. So did a worn out steering u-joint. That is a car with a very weird suspension setup though. Nothing is ever what you expect it to be. Even the rear wheel bearings on that car can cause weird steering issues and you would never suspect it because it's such a short car, if the back is moving around it feels the same as the front.

Something to think about - the 4.0L can be stroked easily with the 4.2L (258) crank. Just note: while I know it fits with no mods needed to the block, I don't know all the ins and outs with that mod - I know the snout is different for example bringing up questions on pulleys (for sure the connecting rods need changing too, and balancing... never mind, little too much work - but it does give you some idea's). Anyways, the bore is larger on the 4.0L, so more performance potential then the 258. The AMC/Jeep inline 6 is stout, and there is a surprising amount of aftermarket parts and things that one can do with them. Can't wait to see the turb-ski setup you do with it. :D

Havnt looked through all the comments but one thing to note is all the jeep 4.0L were all flat tapper cam shafts so when you do in fact change the pan and oil the zinc is definitely needed. Cam shafts are an absolute pain to change. Ask me how I know. Lol

Enjpyed the video. Watched when you bought another for a friend with patched frame a few years ago that you called a new frame. I'm into all types of vehicles. Have owned vintage muscle car for over 30 years and had multiple BMWs and still own one. In the last few years have owned 3 Wranglers. They are like motorcycles. Most people put their personal touches on them and many have no clue of what they are doing. I personally have had to undo many of the "upgtrades" done by prior owners on all of mine. On the yellow TJ, the lockers and gears maybe attractive to some but things like the Rough Country lift really take away from it and would make a buyer question the quality of the Jeep in general. Keep making great videos!

Those valve cover bolts are probably 1/4" - 20 SAE with a 7/16" head. The iconic Jeep 4.0L inline six was developed by AMC in the mid-80's using many existing AMC parts. At that time, most American auto manufacturers were still using SAE fastener sizes on their engines. 11mm is 0.433" and 7/16" is 0.4375", so it is very common for folks to mistake 11m and 7/16 for each other. Good luck, and have fun Jeeping!

Can't wait for the Supercharger kit ;) I restored my 1998 TJ 4.0. Mine has same gearing but swapped to Ford 8.8 rear axle. You might upgrade those OxLockers to the electronic actuators for convenience, given you will be swapping cables anyways. Consider the HD Steering kit from Quadratec if you're concerned about wobble. Consider a variable speed electronic fan swap, good for some HPs. I agree w others about SLE kit. There's a fantastic kit from Novak for transfer case linkage that I recommend. Make sure you clean out your oolant passages and heater core -- prob a mess. Lastly, I would keep the 5 speed unless you'll be doing lots of highway miles. Have fun!

Not sure if anyone has mentioned but 2000 to 2004 inline 4.0L engines in the US (as far as I know) have bad heads. The head cracks at the 3 to 4 or 4 to 5 cylinders. I had one and could only diagnose when engine was at OP temp. Biggest sign is the overflow tank is nasty. Next is upgrading the single hole injectors to Bosch 4+ hole injectors. Runs better, more power, and slightly better MPG. Jeeps are great!!

I forgot in my first post, USE OEM INTAKE/EXHAUST MANIFOLD GASKET AND HEAD GASKET!!!! do not use felpro or any after market. Oem is 3 piece metal gaskets. They're also cheaper than felpro, but that was like 12 years ago. I believe 2000-2004 jeeps with the 4.0 were one way fuel systems, no return. Dumb design. The fuel pump/sending until is expensive. The headbolts Alex keeps talking about are just standard headbutts the first 3 or 4 are bolts/studs that go into the water jacket. You NEED thread sealant for those.
@Jarhead64

@@Flxxup_93as far as the head, junk it. 55# of scrap. Get a new manufactured head. The one company called Alabama Cylinder Head Company is long out of business, but there are other companies that make good heads. Do not get reman cylinder heads. You could always stroke the engine to i think a 4.7L. Much more torque but also drinks fuel...

@@Jarhead64 The cracked head issue was fixed in 2003 with a revised/reinforced head from the factory. It is called the TUPY head and is the strongest and best performing head made. Also, Jeep started using "returnless" fuel systems in 1995. But despite the name "returnless" they do actually return the fuel. It is just returned at the fuel filter instead of at the fuel rail and the parts are not expensive at all.

Jeep switched to using disc brakes on the rear axle in 2003 (maybe earlier, I own one of the first 2003 Jeep Wrangler Rubicons ever built, first one delivered to Fresno Chrysler Jeep, built in August 2002). The 5 speed NV3550 is a good transmission, the wear on the second gear synchro is normal for the mileage. Shifting at low RPM will make it feel worse. I also have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (non Rubicon) that I just drove today, it has 200k miles on it. The second gear synchro on my six speed is worn just like yours, behaves about the same. Some may warn about issues with the 4.0L head on the 99 on up, but if you keep it stock / mild tune, they seem to last a long time. My 2005 has the original engine, we did replace the clutch about 25k miles ago, and also replaced the crank position sensor at that time. However, that is a 2005/2006 issue, the crank position sensor (in the old distributor hole) on the 2004 is more reliable. They changed the ECU in 2005/2006 and switched to a different sensor.

Bought a C6Z with heads ported/fixed, big cam, MSD intake, clutch, long tubes, and a smaller supporting stuff for the same price as a stock one. Had it a couple years and sold it for a decent profit. Couple of month later I bought my 987.2 Cayman S with 28k of mods for below market, and some pretty desirable stuff too ($85000 Soul Exhaust, $8000 HRE wheels, etc.). I'll probably not sell this one as the wife wants it when I'm done with it, but if I did, I would likely pull some of the mods, sell them and make even more money on the car.

Living just north of Atlanta, I kept the top & doors off 7-8 months of the year. I had a bikini top for the summer months. Even a heater was useless. I kept the plugs pulled inside the tub. Between rain & off reading it was always wet & it made it much easier to just hose out all the dirt & mud after off road adventures . It was an absolute tank that could go just about anywhere. My jeep's frame is nearly flawless bc when I wash it in winter, I spray down the undercarriage, and I'd usually give it a good wash every spring. It's not hard to keep your frame in good shape. Just rinse the salt off. It's that easy.
