LIKE IT SO THAT HE SEES IT! You have installed the V-belt rollers the other way around. I mean these two wheels in the middle of the engine close to each other. I even checked your first videos and they were the other way. I noticed this because the top roller has grooves and a smooth part of belt rests on it, and the bottom roller is smooth with a grooved belt on it. I wrote it under your previous video, but I'm not sure you have seen it. Greetings from Poland :)

Good work mate :) On these more modern aluminium European motors, it's incredibly rare for a starter to cause any damage in a hydrolock situation... they generally just don't put out the kind of torque needed to do any real damage, specially at such low rotational speeds. I've (strangely) had quite a few encounters with dud injectors hydrolocking motors similar to this (twice on my own BMW v8's) and never had any lasting issues. If the starters spun twice as fast and twice as hard as they do, then maybe... But I knew a minute in that you'd be all good :) Looking forward to seeing what happens next!! Have fun, living the dream.

You have learned that old injectors REALLY don’t like to have their fuel pressure removed and then sit around for a long time. A cool tip to fix them immediately is to tap them with a 12 volt source a couple of times (they are 5 volt). This overdrives them momentarily and they break free. Astounding how quickly they start working just fine.

Alex, my man, I remember watching YOUR VIDEO about cleaning fuel injectors on a budget, and I know you're excited to get this thing back together but you should have taken the extra hour or so and cleaned those injectors before you put them back in, you likely would have discovered the problem with that one before putting it in there! And maybe that's part of the reason why it was running so badly on your drive home. You've been so thorough throughout the rest of this build, and I give you mad respect for that! Thank goodness you really didn't run the motor for very long, it's probably fine but you definitely dodged a V12-sized bullet there and hopefully next time you tear down an engine (and I'm sure you will) you'll be sure to make 100% sure that the injectors are in good shape before putting it all back together. I'm looking forward to this thing being finalized! 👍

Been there myself, starting up an engine after rebuilding and being SO nervous at first start up.... Very happy to see everything went fine at the end, Alex! Nine months ago, I was replacing the valve cover gasket in my ´00 E430 and I changed the injectors´o-rings too. When I started the engine smoke in the exhaust and bad idle...it took 4-5 minutes while I hooked the scan tool to see cylinder 5 was misfiring. Turned the engine off and the next turn of the key was the end of the engine after 230K miles running strong. Later I discovered a couple of bad spark plug cables (Beru brand, brand new installed 2 years ago) that seems that broke when retiring the coils (and I was very gentle) and a fuel injector in not very good condition in that cylinder 5 produced a "fuel-lock". If I had wait to replace the spark-plugs and the cables that I already had in mind, this would never happened. I understand what you were saying...it does not let you sleep well... You were lucky that only turned the engine for a few seconds and discovered that quickly. Keep doing these videos, you are great!

Phew!!! Crisis averted. It's such a relief when you find it isn't broken after sooooooo much time and effort had already been put into it 👍

I feel ya pain, been in the same place. I bought after market injectors for my hemi jeep claiming they were "OEM". They ended up being wrong and blew my engine. Lesson learned for me, some after market parts are not worth it. Glad you're staying positive!

Been watching you since mid Ml55 build. Huge growth in your content from there and your channel. Although I don't do nearly as much or intensive work, I do work. I know what you are feeling when it comes to "oh no" and "bleep yes" moments. Glad you record to show all of us that we are human and have the ability to take on theses types of challenges.

15+ years ago I had a '93 E54A Galant VX-R with the 6A12 2.0L MIVEC quad cam 24V V6 I rebuilt the engine on over the course of a few months. The cylinder heads were previously reconditioned so I left them as they were and didn't touch them other than cleaning them up a little as they had been sitting for some time. Well when it came to first start, the engine fired on all six cylinders just fine and was initially a little tappy until the oil had fully circulated (these don't have hydraulic lash adjusters like most Mitsubishis of the same era, instead they had manually adjusting two piece tappets which had a little foot on the bottom held in place by a plastic clip which always fails eventually. Anyway back to the first start, as the engine was warming up I started to fill the cooling system with water/coolant mix and once the engine got up to temperature idling it sounded different and then when I moved the car out it was really down on power and seemed to run really rich and it would really struggle to start subsequent times with the starter motor, doing basically exactly the same as what happened to Alex with smoke coming from the starter. I was trying to figure out what was wrong for weeks, perhaps even a month or two I shelved the car while I worked on other things trying not to think about it - then one night I woke up from a dream that I had figured out exactly was wrong, you see on these MIVEC engines they also had Modulated Displacement (MD) which in this case one whole cylinder bank switches off to conserve fuel (it does this by closing all valves and shutting injectors on that one bank, making one bank act as an air spring for the other bank). What had happened is once the engine got up to temp and all the parameters were right (idling, not in gear ie as if you were at a traffic light) the engine switched to MD mode (handled by a single solenoid), however the solenoid actually got stuck open which meant MD mode was permanently engaged despite the ECU knowing otherwise - so it was injecting fuel and acting as if it was meant to be running on all six cylinders however the fuel was just being sprayed into the front bank inlet ports with closed valves, but the fuel would eventually partially trickle passed the inlet valves over time into the cylinders - it was hard enough for the starter to turn the engine with one bank acting as an air spring, but when you add a little fuel into the mix it just made it harder. At the time I was living some 2+ hours away from the car which was stored at my parents place. The next day after the dream I drove down to that location and whipped off the rocker cover (thankfully the MD solenoid was on the front bank) and soaked the little plunger of the solenoid in WD40 and manually actuated it a few times to clear up the old oil gunk that seemed to keep it open, and sure enough this was enough to get it running on all six and sounding amazing! (Check my videos for some potato-cam footage). Though that engine didn't last too long, it seems I didn't torque up the crankshaft pulley bolt enough and after a few months the keyway was being chewed out damaging the crank. I had to pull the motor again and swap in a new crank and bearings. I loved that car so much but I was glad when it left my stable - it was just as fiddly (and rewarding) as an Alfa Romeo to own.

Working in your own cars ... lovely, hateful, addictive. Even if you just need to change your spark plugs, you already know that you will suffer at some point. I can't imagine with a project like this. Greetings from Argentina.
