@@matthewwendt7315 Now this is not a good solution. The worst possible idea is making sets even more expensive. Already many people are completely priced out of beautiful sets like Rivendell. If anything they need to go cheaper and start with smaller, better sets. A Lego sets like this one, that is mostly a cheap-ass playset cannot cost more than $100 tops, maybe a little more if they add all of the minifigures and the buildable sentinel. If they go into the 200+ range, they better have something worth that money, with lots of figures, great building techniques, a ton of detail and a lot of printed parts. Certainly not this undersized shed with all those stickers. The idea is that if Lego has these massive asking prices, they better deliver value, at least enough value to make you feel like you bought something amazing. Rivendell, though massively out of anyone's price range, at least got that right. This does neither, it is overpriced, way too simple and way too small.

Blame the designer. The guy who was tooting his own horn about “creating” 150+ Lego sets. This set is absolutely trash. Daily Bugle: 696 more pieces, 15 more minifigures at $350 USD. Boutique Hotel: $230 same piece count, 7 minifigures, actually a great modular building with ZERO stickers. Lego knew X-Men IP is a massive crash grab. The X-Jet really set the tone on this line. Polybag is probably gonna be $20 USD. Lego had the IP for X-Men since 2012 and the whole narrative about license is a terrible attempt to justify the price. Lego is fully aware of how extremely popular the Jim Lee Marvel Series is.

I don’t blame the designer but it is clear that both X-Men are horrible values and have jacked up prices compared to other Marvel sets. I do like the set though just should have included more minifigs for the price.

@@Michael-o5s5c I think it is perfectly fine to blame the designer if the set is trash, which it is. Maybe as a kiddy playset, this is fine. Aside from the stickers, which are always just a bad thing to have in kids sets (or adult sets too), this could function as a simple, cheap option to get kids their X-Men base. That is not $330 worth of Lego at all though. It is worth half that or less at least.

I totally agree. The designer dropped the ball. Don't know why the pieces are so dense and cluttered in some parts. Should have focused more on scale and less on complicating the building design and details. In the end, whatever techniques he used led to a bland design anyway.

Terrible grey walls combined whith orange ones, a mansion that has no stairs but rather an elevator that "is outside", extremely thin building, ugly alley which seems to be mocking about the basketball court, ugly danger room on the first and second floor when I think it should be on the basement, lack of effort in minifigs. Can't believe they even dare to charge $330

As a fan of the comics, cartoons, and movies, I'm a huge fan of this set. There's some really cool callbacks all throughout. One of my faves is the cure screen, because it's actually not the Mutant Cure, it's the cure for the Legacy Virus that Beast came up with! I do wish it had been a floor taller to include a sub-basement level, and the Cerebro bit looks like a hairdresser😅 Other than that I am pretty pleased overall!

Thanks for being critical! I've been watching your reviews for well over 10 years now and there was a time when you started branching out into other themes through LAN where it felt like you occasionally went a bit too easy on lego for my taste. Another measurement you could take into consideration besides piece count is weight. As you surely know, sometimes sets with a seemingly unreasonable ppp have an unusually high amount of large pieces, like the 2019 UCS ISD. Similarly here it looks like the Avengers Tower with all its large panels is a far better value compared to the X Mansion than the ppp suggests.

There are several issues with this set and I think not having the 'movie' version of the X-Mansion is the least of the problems. In the comics, the version of the mansion has a large school / dorm part, which basically houses the gifted children, the classrooms and iconic places like Prof. X office and such. Then there is an underground part of the mansion, which acts as a 'secret' base for the X-Men team, housing the lab, the danger room, cerebro and perhaps personal living quarters for the X-Men team and a large bay for the X-Jet as well. The whole building should probably be much larger to begin with, or they could have just kept it to the bare minimum and only have the upper floors with just the school / dorm part. This set is just absolutely tiny, you can see the difference compared to another modular two-story building side by side, this is about half the height it should be and less than a third of the depth. I think if they wanted to do a set that does the X-Men Mansion justice, this would require something that is at least massive, or they could go this route and make a very simple kids playset, which should cost about half or less of what it does now. There are almost no redeeming factors in the set, even the minifigures (which could have increased the appeal of the set) are just okay. The Sentinel is reasonable and probably one of the best fearures of the set, but just 1 sentinel is not a challenge to the X-Men so they could have added at least one more. Plus it makes the mansion look even more tiny than it already is. Finally, there is the asking price, which for such a simple, small building with a few figures is just ridiculous. You can buy several great Lego sets for that money, or create about 2 or 3 actual good scale X-Men Mansions if you buy parts for that money and build it yourself. I know Lego is expensive but this is just a joke. Add to insult that there are a million stickers, no real interesting build features or anything worthwhile to redeem the price, this is a very hard skip. Even if it were the price that you'd expect for it, somewhere between $150 - $175, I'd still not be tempted to buy it.

I really want to like it, but I just can’t. I do have a lot of sympathy for the designers who clearly wanted a super packed set with loads of Easter eggs for fans, but they just weren’t allocated the budget to fully realise that. Biggest issue is its footprint in comparison to the size of the baseplates. If I’m looking at it right then from the side it’s only 12 studs wide, so the building takes up less than half of the baseplates area 😕 and like a lot of sets nowadays it need a *lot* more minifigures Edit: I’m sure the designers were briefed that it’s to be modular, but it definitely shouldn’t have been. The garden and pavement don’t add anything to the build and they probably detract quite a lot from the budget, especially the 3 large baseplates

You're being awfully nice in your conclusions. I appreciate the sympathy, but this would never get any votes if it were on Lego Ideas. It is way too small, the rooms barely fit anything, it has way too many stickers (or stickers at all) and not enough minifigures. Also, you would expect a lot more detail on a premium priced set. The building from both the inside and outside is very simple and they rely on the stickers way too much to add some detail back in. Also, a plain green piece of ground like what is in front of the house doesn't take up any budget, it barely uses pieces. I don't mind adding a bit of a simple garden exactly because of that, but it should never impact the size of the building at all. This is clearly a beginner in terms of how simple of a design this is. The sentinel is reasonably crafted, everything else is not.

I don't think this is meant for fans of the franchise. It is more a cheap playset than anything else. With a large imagination, a kid could concievably play with this and overlook all its flaws and still have a good time. The issue is, they priced it like a massive flagship set that only a few adults are able to afford. Lego has a massive wanting the cake and eating it too problem, underdelivering on sets and expecting more for it in return. The value proposition from this is horrendous, as is the quality. Even the stickers alone are just a slap in the face of anyone that does anything with Lego.

I loved the idea of an X-Mansion, but this looks SO generic on the outside (almost like a repaint of the museum) and the inside seems so cramped. I honestly would have been happy if the outside had been a good looking mansion and then the inside was just one giant danger room with maybe a side room or two for cerebro and a living room area or bedroom. It would have been so much fun to have a big interior area for Danger Room set ups and play.

Rogue (chest print quality speaks for itself), Wolverine (Where is the blue shoulder print or dual molded arms), Jean Gray (bad hair piece, no leg side print), Cyclops (bad hair piece, leg print is not accurate), Iceman (somewhat acceptable), Storm (you give Jean Gray pauldron piece but not to Storm), Bishop (printing is too modern comparing with the rest), Gambit (you print knee pieces, make a f dual molded legs), Professor X (i taught he was sporting green suit, and put yellow brackets/or snot brick on that hover chair atrocity), Magneto (where are the dual molded legs), Sentinel (lets not talk about the sentinel, shame), Premium Price (no Jubilee, no Beast)

Future Superhero Modulars I’d love to see: Baxter Building, probably the most realistic with Fantastic 4 first steps on the way An Iron Man 3 mansion would be cool, but I don’t think it could work with the modular format because it’s on a cliff over the ocean DC Modulars is probably wishful thinking, but I’d love to see Wayne Manor done, a Daily Planet, and of course, the Hall of Justice would work amazing as a Modular. Please Lego 🙏

It would involve a lot of parts, but certainly not over 330 bucks worth of parts. It would be fun to have a large underground base with Cerebro, the lab, the personal quarters of the X-men and the landing bay for the X-Jet. Then on top of that, the mansion itself, with the school part, a large classroom or two, a large dormitory, a library and prof X study. I wouldn't add a lot of outside area, except for maybe a driveway up front and a garden in the back. It is going to be massive anyways, so saving a little on this details can help keeping it's footprint reasonable.

I have a question: how good of a stand in school is this for our LEGO cities (it does feature some classrooms and the medical place is a great medical school room)? Does it work better as a technical school?

I don’t understand why people want this to connect with the other marvel Modular’s so bad? It’s not even close to the same place. The reason the other sets connect is because in the MCU, they are literally RIGHT beside each other. The sanctum, bugle and avengers tower are all built beside each other if u see the movie but clearly the X mansion isn’t. I would have liked the set more if it didn’t connect. I probably won’t be buying it for that reason alone

Despite everyone’s complaints, I’m very thankful we have this!! Some of these characters would have never been converted into minifigure form if it wasn’t for this set - only the fourth (not including mighty micros) X-Men set ever! 🎉

This is the sort of set you can’t please everyone. If they made it a £500 set which is bigger and with more minifigures you would get other people (and probably some of the same) complaining it is too much. I would personally have loved a bigger one but I think more a more affordable price point this is pretty good

Whatever is affordable about this one I don't know, a $100 set is already pushing it, but if it is at this price, you expect both quality and detail. This set has neither. Yes they could have easily made a 500 dollar version, they can make a 1000 dollar version if they wanted, but it needs to be a good set and frankly making it affordable is part of being a good set. Rivendell looks amazing, but it is out of the range of most people, so I think they missed on that one. This set is way worse, as there is almost no value here. The tiny builing, with even more tiny unusable rooms, the insane amount of stickers, mediocre minifigures, no details on the out and inside. No excuse here, it is just a trash set.

I live in Victoria, BC where Hatley Castle is located. It’s such an amazing building and the grounds are beautiful too. I’m not an X-Men fan, but I would have bought the set if it was designed based on the castle.

LEGO is definitely testing the threshold on price and what people are willing to pay. Definitely not worth $330

man i was so excited when I heard the rumours, but it really does look like a playset not a display piece like the tower and the sanctum. really sad, the x-men are my favourite marvel superheroes
