Beautiful job, Lena! I'm so glad you posted another gouache video and hope you'll do more soon. Would love to see you do some flowers. I'd also be interested in seeing you mixing your paints and how much water you add to them with your brush. It's hard to tell from this video. So glad to see you back on KZbin!
@LenaRivo7 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica, I promise I will paint some flowers for you in one of my next demonstrations ;) As to the color mixing. Unfortunately I cant include my mixing tray into the frame as it takes too much space and the painting would be too small. I have to make a video on it... but it for sure will take some time. In general, the fist rule for mixing gouache colors is - gouache has to stay opaque. My mixtures usually have a not-very-thick butter cream consistence (like in the first brushstrokes in this video). They are never too fluid. If you feel you are messing water around the tray, then you probably have either to add more of the needed color into the mixture or more white paint (permanent white). Sometimes I dont add water at all. Paint has to be manageable, but opaque. Some colors are fluid enough to use them right from the tubes. I hope it helps.

Thank you, that does help. Looking forward to your next video! :)

Thanks Lena. Very interesting video! I tried to do my own version of your clouds but had great problems with my whites/paler colours ‘sinking in’. I had been attracted to gouache because of its supposed opacity and a friend gave me some old ones to try. The tube of W&N permanent white was a little dried up and hard to get out of the tube but seemed to rewet to a reasonable consistency. However it wouldn’t cover any darker passages. When I bought a new tube of permanent white the consistency was much better, the problem disappeared and I got a good opaque coverage where needed. So a message to those watching - don’t use old paint! I suspect this is the reason many people don’t get on with gouache.
@LenaRivo6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Frances. You are right. I wouldn't use cheap brands for the same reason. They are much harder to work with...
@cris.sandman45995 жыл бұрын
The winser and Newton gouche I bought doesn't get to that consistency even if I add a little bit of water :( did I get defective ones from Amazon?
@TheLord_MyShepherd5 жыл бұрын
Cris, try 50% water to paint. Generally you are supposed to add water... Play around with ratios till you find what you like... Use more water for your underpainting then get thicker (less water) as you build up your layers. Generally you paint light colours over dark with gouache. 👍 also w & n are a good brand but the make their gouache specifically for designers not fine artists. I prefer schminke or Daniel Smith or M Graham for this kind of painting but don't waste your Windsor & newton!! Still great. Hope that helps. Kind regards. 😉

Hi, I’ve always used normal acrylics and recently started on gauche and felt like the latter seemed to darken in color as it dried more so than acrylics. It was also a pain in the ass since I am a super slow painter, and the paint on my palette would also start to darken to a point where I couldn’t tell how to mix to it’s original pigment. The skin I was painting became patches of dark strokes that seemed to appear out of nowhere... I would very much appreciate it if you could give me some tips. You seem so comfortable using gauche, I wish I could paint like that ☹
@LenaRivo7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know what you mean. Painting with gouache is a bit tricky :) I always mix my mid tone and light value colors (not the dark ones) a bit lighter and more saturated than they suppose to be. It results in right values and saturation of the colors when the paint has dried.
@righttoleftrepeat7 жыл бұрын
I guess I’m being impatient to get things done the way I’m used to with acrylics. Thank you so much for the reply! More practice and hopefully I’ll get a hang of adjusting the lightness/saturation.
@LenaRivo7 жыл бұрын
Yes, patience is what you need working with gouache! To me painting with oils is much more easy that with gouache, because of absence of that color shift.. But the velvet-like finish of gouache is worth the suffering :D
@burnts1enna7 жыл бұрын
This is lovely! Why don’t more artists paint in gouache? It doesn’t seem to be a popular medium but it can produce very appealing paintings.

I agree with you. Lena, I have been working to try and get that lightest peach like color you have in the top of the cloud and just seem to be off, not getting that pop. I combine the orange with some zinc white and it immediately drops the saturation making it dull by comparison to what I see in the above painting. Any thoughts that I should be thinking about? Thanks~
@LenaRivo4 жыл бұрын
Tami, I struggled with this painting too. The entire painting turned out to be pale/washed out. It looks better in the video. This is not the best example of how to paint an evening sky. Among my “pleinairpril” paintings there are two with evening skies. I think colors are truer in them.

Tammy Scoop thank you! I use Protapes tape. It rips the paper too.. I use it only when I film the process because it is the same color as my paper. Otherwise I use a cheap yellow low tack masking tape that works great.

You can also use paper tape or masking tape as said above. Stick the tape once on the top of your hand and remove then stick it to your paper. This process removes excess glue (and removes some of your hand hair, ouch).

"Let's paint some clouds!" "Yeay!" "Let's start with this pale orange color!" "What...???" And no white colors are actually seen on the clouds. Anyway, THAT's why gouache is an awesome medium. You can explore freely and do the unexpected. Thank you for sharing this. This is beautiful! On another note, I have trouble in blending colors with gouache. Can you kindly share some advice? Thank you in advanced. 😃
@LenaRivo7 жыл бұрын
Abdillah Azhar 😆 white colors in the evening clouds?! What?! You won’t find any white in the evening sky. Only muted warm and cool colors. Even painting a noon cloud no pure white can be used because clouds are too far from our eyes and their color is always affected by the distance.
@LenaRivo7 жыл бұрын
Abdillah Azhar I don’t have any troubles in mixing colors with gouache. After drying light colors become much darker, that’s true, but it just takes some time to get used to mix all the light colors a bit lighter.

Thank you for sharing you work. Do you typically let the gouache dry before applying a shade color on top of it or apply on top when as it’s till wet?
@LenaRivo7 жыл бұрын
It depends, Henry. If I want to create a smooth transition of colors inside an area then I keep applying different shades while the previous ones are still wet. But if something is wrong with the color of an area, for example if I see that it has started drying into a darker value than I need it to be (to me it happens only when I work with gouache) then I wait a few minutes until the spot is almost completely dry and apply a lighter version of the color over it.
@henryfawell33497 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Lena! I have been transitioning from watercolor to gouache and fascinated by the differences, including how best to layer and the need to generally load more pigment on the brush than watercolor (especially with clouds). Your videos have been educational and enjoyable. Thank you!
@LenaRivo7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Henry! I am glad you enjoyed the videos. Yes, gouache has more in common with oil or acrylic than with watercolor.. Being an opaque medium it requires a completely different approach.

Hi April! I use a palette of 24 colors of Winsor and Newton Designers gouache. You can learn more about the colors I use on my blog here: lenarivo.blogspot.pt/2016/09/my-palette.html I use the same selection of colors with oils and gouache. You can see how I mix them (maybe not close enough ) in any of my real time plein air demos.

this is so beautiful! everytime i try to do an impressionistic piece with gouache, the colours seem to merge together and act more like watercolour than acrylic, even if i use water only to dampen my brush? any tips?
@LenaRivo6 жыл бұрын
I am not sure.. I wipe off any excess of water using a paper towel every time I wash my brush so that the paint stays creamy and not to watery like watercolor. I also always start my paintings by blocking the largest shapes of the composition; thus the colors have some time to dry and when I lay a new layer on top of them they do not mix together..
@majj23706 жыл бұрын
thats probably it, my paints are probabaly too wet haha. thanks for the fast reply i really appreciate it!!
@LenaRivo6 жыл бұрын
Probably yes. I have found it difficult to work with some brands of gouache (like Sennelier for example). Maybe because they were too watery/wet/diluted. If it is the case you could buy a tube of high quality permanent white gouache and try again because white paint matters the most. If your white is thick your mixture will most likely be creamy and more opaque (it applies to acrylics and oil colors as well). Most of my gouache colors are transparent so it is really white that gives body to my colors ;)
@majj23706 жыл бұрын
Lena Rivo ahhh i see!! I use the Winsor and newton brand, specifically these ones www.therange.co.uk/hobbies-crafts/art-supplies/art-sets/mixed-media/winsor-and-newton-designers-gouache-sets . do you think if i mixed the white acrylic with my white gouache that would make a difference? Love ya!
@LenaRivo6 жыл бұрын
Oh, but WN designers gouache is great. I painted the painting above using it only. So seems like you just have to play with it a bit, without trying to make a painting, just looking for a perfect creamy consistency. Do not mix acrylics with gouache! If you used acrylic gouache then it would be ok, but mixing traditional gouache with acrylics isn't right. I am sure about that :) Having said that, nothing terrible will happen if you do :D

Why do you use gouache if it was acrylic??, like the way you paint with gouache is similar to how people paint with acrylic.. You don't really seem to blend the colors together (Like you would when using watercolor) which is confusing for me
@LenaRivo6 жыл бұрын
Goulash :3C I have been an oil painter for years so I keep approaching every new medium as if it was oil :) and, as I feel, gouache is much closer by its behavior to oil or acrylics than to watercolors.
