Haha! Cute. My situation is that we have to drive for hours to find a vet that even takes rabbits. Our local vets don’t know anything about them. I assume they could split a leg, or something basic. But they won’t normally touch them. We’re on our own.

My partner and I never knew that trancing was a thing! we only got our bunny just a few month ago, so the both of us thought for the longest time that our bunny just loved getting cheek scratches in that position because he looked so relaxed to us. This video definitely educated us on that and we will retire from doing that anymore! 🥰

About your bunny, good job on free roaming her /him in a bunny proofed bedroom! If you want to let her out just always be there and never allow kitty to be alone, but it might be better for you and bun if you slowly allow her to smell kitty in a safe place then meet kitty while you are protecting bunny then once bunny is full grown and neutered allow them to spend more time with you! I went to a rabbit show for the first time ever a couple days ago with my mom and cousin. I would say it was somewhat fun, but I was pretty disturbed with the way they treated those rabbits. First of all, their nails were EXTREMELY long and sharp. I saw people grooming their rabbits, but I never saw them clipping their nails. I got a pretty bad scratch (it drew blood) on my hand from one of the rabbits, which wouldn't have happened if they had kept its nails trimmed. Every time we asked someone if we could hold their rabbit, they picked up the rabbit by its scruff, which also concerned me. I don't even want to talk about the living situations those rabbits were in! My mom told me that those owners didn't actually care about their rabbits' well-being, they just cared about competition. I've thought about entering my rabbit in a show before, but that experience changed my mind completely.

I would just like to point out that while you made some really good points in this video, it’s hard to take advice from someone who has their bunny on the beach. Sand is very disruptive to a rabbits respiratory system and can cause anything from weepy eyes to full on stasis.

My bunny is the sweetest girl ever super loving and smart, but she has always despised being pet she hates it. So to show her love she instead just lies down beside me and hangs out, she just enjoys the company rather than the touch. I always love how you continue to keep educating people for our long eared friends. I had the issue with Morty of sore hocks it is such a process it can come up fast! And I feel so bad for my little man he needs constant hugs and cuddles he is glued to me! Won’t let me go anywhere when he got it. At first I thought bedding ditched it for recycled dust free, all is well he is back to his usual self he like to jump on his cage ledge and he poops through the bars to make a neat pile of cannon balls and the other side is for pee he is super neat about his cage keeps waste to one small part of it the rest is for lounging his cage is stupid huge and he always has an open door to leave as he wants. So I figured he would never get the sore hocks again because he is always welcome to any part of the house and he does stairs no problem to the second floor he likes to be under my bed or my son’s bed. He is just getting over it again for his second time. Although his cage is the largest I have seen for any animal and the size I have is super rare the ledge he like to be on to poop and pee is the culprit and hurting his foot. Now I will have to make a new enclosure I know you don’t like the cage but Morty likes his and chooses to be in it as he knows it is his private leave me alone space, a safe space that all of us respect when it comes to him. He is the star of our troop the apple of our eyes! We have this relationship because of the tips you have helped me with personally when it comes to rabbits there is a finesse to it. Anyway I always leave you a super babble paragraph when I do comment thank you again ladies you and Lennon for being there to help us care for our rabbits the best ways possible.

as someone who rescues rabbits. you can bathe your rabbits if absolutely needed. i’ve done it a couple of times. butt baths are the way to go. they may hate it but rather that then infections from the gunk. also i do trance my rabbits WHEN NEEDED. like checking them for issues and checking their feet and privates and all of that easy bc my rabbits don’t like being picked up, i’ve used it in the past to give meds from being fixed. it worked perfectly. they suck it down and don’t thrash around which would be awful. they also would be freeroamed if my male wasn’t so destructive n taught my other rabbits how to also be destructive. they have toys he just chooses violence. but 2 XL dog pens (in a total of around 80x72 in total space)

The lack of paw pads is the very reason rabbits can tolerate wire flooring, rather than walking on flesh they walk on very think fur that protects there feet. The wire needs to be the right type though, large 14-16 gage 1 by 1/2 inch. Hardware cloth seems kinda bc the gaps are smaller but in actuality the small gage is sharper and can scuff off the thick layer of fur once that happens then you get sore hocks. Some rabbits are also genetically predisposition to have thinner fur on there feet making them prone to sore hocks no matter how soft their flooring is. There is no more sanitary way or eco friendly way to keep a caged rabbit than on wire. Just make sure it’s the proper type and that your rabbit came from good breeding.

I once accidentally had a bad nail trim with my Sophie. The quick was involved. She cleaned herself up better than I did! As I tell people, they’re self cleaning like an oven or cat, but without the gross coughed up hairballs. 🙂 Sophie does not like to be picked up, but once she is, she is a little cuddle bun who does not leave my side. Lulu on the other hand goes absolutely crazy when on a lap. Nail trims are a challenge and once in awhile I have had to resort to trancing to get a long overdue one in. I’ve been working to calm him since I adopted him, so 5.5 years now. He loves to come to me for attention and I pet him on his terms. He’ll jump on my back, but brushing and nail trims are a battle. We all learn to be better though. I remember your Lennon video of treating her like a baby. It seems like you’ve stepped away from that type of video too which is awesome. The best we can do is be friendly to fellow rabbit owners. There are groups that are not *cough* HRS Facebook. Absolutely none of us are perfect, but we all absolutely love our bunnies. We’ll all be the best bunny moms and dads we can be with proper guidance. 🥰

I had a rabbit that would have lived the rest of her life in a cage. Typically, I would say I'm a dog guy. Rabbits are so subtle in comparison. If I was awake and at home, the cage was open for her to run around. I noticed that she always was in a place where she could see me. When I'd cook, I'd always give her the leaves from the celery or the rest of a bunch or parsley. She loved parsley. Towards the end of her life, she got head tilt a lot. I swore I wouldn't get attached but I did. The saddest thing was chopping up some celery and bringing her the leaves and realizing she was gone.

Regarding disturbing bunnies while they're eating: in my house no one even dares to speak too loud if bunny is eating because those are important times and he shouldn't be disturbed. Glad I don’t do these things!!! But what makes me sad is that my mother’s boyfriend doesn’t respect any rules and boundaries of bunnies. My bunny had babies and they are 2 months now. He always does cruel things to them, ESPECIALLY hold them on their backs. I always try to tell him what you are not supposed to do, but he never listens to me. Sometimes I feel like it’s because I’m in middle school, he overpowers me all the time🙁. And whenever my bunny has poop or something stuck to them he’s always like “he/she needs a bath. Oh it won’t hurt them.” Now I feel guilty, because when we first got our bunny we knew nothing. And bed very unfortunately we bathed her a few times I believe. I really need feedback on this please! So, my parents agreed to a bunny a while ago. But, I came up with the idea of free roaming in my bedroom, but putting a home base under my bed. Now, my bed is gigantic in height terms. And in width it is a full size. I said I could put foam matts/specifically foam letter matts under my bed, and cage in the undersize with an ex pen. I could figure it out with the litter box (I'm planning to use a cat litterbox) And I've got everything worked out that deals with future rabbits health. Ex pen will stay open as long as I am not leaving the house. And I will make sure to keep a good diet, and give it plenty of attention and exersise. I'm going to be moving into my own place in a couple of years (I'm 17 right now) once I'm out of highschool, and my parents want me to stay home for college as well. Is this an okay idea? They want to get a bunny from a shelter about an hour away from my house for Christmas. I really trust your judgment so I really hope you're able to see this!

If your bunny runs from you and you want to catch it without harming it. Throw a towel over it and then you can also pick it up easier. Beware, they have very sharp claws. The towel will help reduce the risk of getting a hole in your shirt or you. I can say that with emphasis, lol. Great tips, thanks for sharing. Learn something new everyday.🐇🐇😁😁

I have a disabled rabbit (paraplegic) that has to lie on his side. He can’t walk properly. I have to have him on wire mesh, sadly, because he will lie in his waste, otherwise. He can’t get up over the sides of a litter box at all, and the mesh allows the waste to fall through. Any suggestions? I hate that that’s the only solution I’ve found. He does have sores on his feet from it, too. But I imagine it would be a different source of infection, if his waste didn’t fall through, and his entire body had to lie in it. Please help!
@daniellepiergreen5642
@daniellepiergreen5642 2 жыл бұрын
What about replacing the wire mesh with a soft polyester alternative that has holes in it like mosquito net or something? You can stretch it out really taught and hold it securely in place. Perhaps there might be puppy training pads that could also help? You might be able to get some that are super absorbent and leave the bunny dry? You could also try diapers as many diapers these days are made so the baby stays dry even when they pee. I have an older bunny that lays around a lot and got sore hocks so I got him some memory foam bathroom mats. It's healed up his feet and cushions his body and you can easily wash them it they get mess on them. I hope this helps. My heart breaks for you as you're in a real hard situation. I really hope you can find a solution that works so you and your bunny can live happily ever after

Thank you very much for your reply. I’ll have to look into some of those options. I had just assumed the fibers and plastics of pads/diapers were a no-go for a chewing animal. But maybe it’s worth looking into. And I like the mesh idea. Intriguing… 😊😊😊

I would like to say something Abt #1, while there are some stereotypes of "scruffing your bunny" the main reason it's bad is bc most ppl use the power inappropriately. A rabbit who is more than 3-4lbs shouldn't be scruffed at all period but a rabbit of the appropriate weight will experience no pain while doing so. yes it is uncomfortable just the same as it is uncomfortable to muzzle a dog but it is not painful to a rabbit of the appropriate weight. Alot of people like to argue with this that they don't have scruffs like canines which is true but a canines scruff is just extra skin, the same thing a rabbit has just more. Also if you have a larger rabbit who is bitey or needs a swift move from one spot to another, scruffing and then placing a hand under the bum holds them upright so they cannot nip while also ensuring thier weight is in your hand and not on their neck. The main stereotypes of scruffing came after it was merged with the idea of picking up by the ears. While you should NEVER pick you're bunny up by the ears "scruffing" is okay as long as it is used appropriately

I once read a book that said that before people started holding their bunnies by the scruff, (This was a book I bought in the early to mid 90's, so yes, it's quite outdated by now.) magicians would grab the rabbits out of their hats by the ears, so they would wiggle around and show the bunny was real. :< This one probably goes without saying with anything that has ears, but please don't grab your bunnies by the ears. :(

I agree that bathing your rabbit is something that you shouldn't do. However, just last week my bunny somehow jumped on a shelf and squirted lotion all over his behind. I didn't want to bathe him, but I had to. I just filled a container up just enough to where it would soak just his behind and legs and not his full body.

I love your insights on helpful knowledge to a healthy and happy Bunny. You truly are a gift of brains 🙂. What other things to not do iny personal opinion because I have one as well is Don't make your bunny sniff everything you do and one other thing keep them away from the dirt that appears as sand throughout grass fields because there's a bunch of unnecessary things crawling plus to top it off no objects that are not bunny chewy safe. While I generally agreed with a lot of your points. I believe that as long as you keep a close eye on the rabbit and following the proper steps, introducing them to predators isn't bad. Plus, some predators are more, gentle than others. I believe if I plopped my bunny next to my cat, the worst thing my cat would do is slap it in the head a few times. I never really understood my cat, but she probably never hunted in her dreams. Better safe than sorry but still that cat was pretty much harmless to everything.

I know everyone says a rabbit needs a rabbit companion, but...this is what happens! With prarie dogs, they say get one, make a pet of him, then get him a friend. @@lazyhomebody1356 I adopted a young adult bonded pair over 4 years ago, after having only one rabbit (that I got before he was full-grown) when I was a kid. The single rabbit was much friendlier and more affectionate than the pair, which I had not realized would be the case. When you think about it, though, who needs petting from a human when there's a rabbit who will lick your ears and face all the time? The only part of me they lick is my hands when there is food residue on them, whereas the single one licked my nose (and only MY nose) like mad. Looked at another way, though, it's better to have two so they don't get lonely and naughty if I'm away all day.

You are right about the wire bottom cages and grabbing by the scruff that it's still pretty prevalent with some people, mostly people who keep farm animals but even met a vet tech teacher who thought grabbing a rabbit by the scruff was "just like a cat does" like wtf how embarrassing that a "professional" has such outdated knowledge 🙄 But luckily more ppl have been spreading the word on keeping and handling bunnies how it should. Sadly where i live the wire bottom cages are very common AND they keep the rabbits outside 24/7, it's mostly older people with their old ways. I'm glad more people are learning of the better care for bunnies tho, i have shared much of the knowledge (& your videos) and when i ask people "see, isn't this better for a bunny that you want to care for as a loving pet?" and people do agree when they see how healthy and happy the bunny is.

Thank you Lorelei for all your content and information! ❤ I would like to recommend if you could please do a video on bonding bunnies. 🙏 I have 2 neutered male bunnies, who are brothers. When I got them, they were babies and they were already bonded. I started researching them and found you right away, and continued to binge watch you. I've learned so much and it changed the way I raise them. You saved them from the outdoor hutch, I got them neutered, and I treat them better, all because of you. 🐇🐇💝 Thank you! But, like clockwork, as they came of age they began to fight just like you say & I separated them right away and got them neutered. They have been separated for 8 weeks total (1 week before neutering & 7 weeks after neutering), and I'm ready to start rebonding them now. But there is so little information on bonding, and it's contradictory. Can you please do a video on bonding neutered male rabbits. I saw one from 101 Rabbits called How to Bond Rabbits. I'd be curious what you think of it. She's stress bonding which I feel like you'd possibly disagree with. Other articles say start with a large space vs she says start with a small space & work your way up. A video like this would be invaluable for me, and others like me, especially considering how much I respect your knowledge. Thank you Lorelei! Have a Wonderful day! ❤
