Sorry. Lorelai seems like a complete know it all and it's her way or the highway. Everyone is different. Every bunny is different. Living circumstances are different. I've had rabbits for 25 years. Our longest living bunny lived for 13 years until we had to put her down for her own safety and health...she lived in a wire cage. Our 10 other rabbits lived in wire bottom cages until 2004-2005. That's all there was back in the early to late 90s and mid 2000s. She was let out. She was loved. Even now, our potty trained bunnies for the past decade stay in a cage until we let them roam and they definitely stay there to sleep. Our current bunny prefers to stay in her cage even with the door open and her ability to free roam. She must not mind the plastic bottom, and neither did the last bunny, who both flop and sleep in there. There is nothing wrong with a water bottle instead of dishes or different litter box set ups with no hay in them, just appropriate shavings, or being covered and open is fine. You don't need a bunny bed or a hidey house. And all of our rabbits are kept in their cage overnight. And unlimited hay is fine put on the ground. Toys are rotated. Also nothing wrong with hutches. We have a beautiful wooden "summer home" hutch on our deck so the bunny can be outside in the summer and fall and enjoy the fresh air for a few hours...and we monitor the rabbits and never put them out in weather hotter than 75°. All the same set up as the indoor cage. Again. I'm almost 32 years old. My family and I have had many many bunnies for 25 years...all of them are rescues or adopted from rescue centers or state run humane societies . 13 years is pretty unprecedented as far as rabbits living that long. Articles and our exotic rabbit vets confirmed that. One of our rabbits, Mercedes, lasted 13 years in a wire cage. (3 others lived 8-11 years in the plastic bottom home base cage.) We finally had to put her down for her own health and safety as she was blind and would run head first into furniture or she'd lived until 14-15 as she was otherwise still healthy!!! Wire was the only option for decades. My family and I are much more or an authority on rabbits than this girl. She hasn't had rabbits for over 25 years. Her way isn't the only right way and if you don't do exactly her way you are a horrible owner, eff off. Now we have plastic bottom cages for the past 13 years. Our rabbits live routinely into age 10-13. Only health issues are occasional GI stasis for one rabbit out of 25+ years of rabbits ,which I researched and diagnosed....to the regular vet after many of our rare exotic rabbit vets leave to bigger places like Chicago...we are an hour North. Cages at night are fine. So are water bottles and hay separated from the litter box. Hutches are fine too as I said we have a beautiful wooden one on our deck as their summer vacation home to enjoy the nice weather. They roam when we allow. They do binkies like crazy and zoomies. They loaf, flop, and superman in our company while free roamimg and in the cage. We also have a beautiful backyard with a forest preserve. Our most recent, current bunny is stupid. She is potty trained. But no one was smarter and more affectionate than Ms. Mustache. Fully potty trained. Leave her out all day and however far a room was from her littrbox in her cage, she'd hop all the way back to go potty and then go back again. No accidents. I was her favorite. She'd groom and kiss and lick my lips, eyelids, face...other family members hands and loved licking our pants, esp jeans as well as pillows, She had complete free roam of entire house, even rooms with expensive oriental rugs as well as outside on a harness in addition to the outdoor hutch. She was so relaxed and would flop thstvshe looked dead. Many binkies and zoomies until she slowed down at 7-8. Died at 10. I buy the most expensive, custom made toys from the top 3 Etsy rabbit shops like The Well Kept Rabbit whose entire store is endorsed by Lucy Moore who wrote a book on rabbit health and has a Ph.D. They have seasonal, 6 types of health ranges, gourmet all natural expensive treats from the top shops...I spend $250 a month on those forages, natural gourmet treats, and toys, as well as a custom forage mat and a 5-way the convertible cushion that were made in London, a special flop cushion...which she is so dumb it took her 2 years to figure out, etc. Instead she prefers $7 cat/dog padded mats to the $30+ special padded cushioned floor beds. This rabbit has around $500 of stuff for her to use and enjoy. I wish these things were around and available 5-10 years ago for my favorite rabbit and other buns to enjoy as well.

The conversation was very frustrating for me. I live in the Midwest, where there are, unfortunately, a lot of rabbit breeding places, and every kid in 4H raises and shows rabbits. It's hard to argue with people who don't want to or can't see how things have changed. It used to be common for dogs to live outdoors only, and now it's much more common for them to live mostly indoors. Same with cats (though sadly plenty of people still let their cats roam free too.) I hope that you gave that family something to think about. I know in other countries it's safer (temp wise, at least) to keep rabbits and guinea pigs outside, but it still seems risky to me.
@lindamarziotto20712 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is very risky to keep them outside! Years ago, when I was a kid, we had a double hutch with 4 bunnies outside. We had a huge snowstorm and someone let their 2 huskies roam the neighborhood & the dogs were able to slaughter all our bunnies because the snow was so piled high & the were able to tear the cage apart! 😭😭😭. My sister went out to feed them that morning & it was an horrendous scene as you can imagine. Thank God, our precious, Dutch Bunny,(who looks a lot like Lennon), Buffy, had stayed inside with us that night. She was trained for inside. She was the mother of the 3 bunnies that were in the hutch. The father was also killed. So needless to say, it IS DANGEROUS to keep bunnies outside. There is some hard evidence for that mom on the phone call! Unfortunately, I am very allergic to rabbits as I was constantly sick as a child not knowing about that allergy to animals. So I cannot have a bunny, but I still enjoy watching these videos. I just love bunnies!❤🐇

@smokymountainangoras2 жыл бұрын
True, but mites are spread through contact like lice, so it doesn’t matter if they are indoor or outdoor bunnies. Also most parasites are due to unsanitary living conditions, definitely need to keep your bunny’s living space clean wherever they are! 👍
@courtany78712 жыл бұрын
Also the fact that bunnies can’t regulate their body temp so they can also die very easily from weather conditions, and rabbits hide their illnesses and injuries and it can be very hard to tell if they’re sick or hurt. So when you don’t spend a lot of time around your bun you don’t know their behavior well enough to tell if they’re hurt or sick it’s hard even when you spend every day with them let alone when you’re only real interaction is giving them food and water and letting them out. Over all it’s way too risky not only with the things out of your control but also with things you could’ve controlled by just getting to know them and spending quality time with them.

Yes, I agree !!! If a bunny is going to be a pet, then the homeless bunnies at the shelter deserve a family, please save them, each and every bunny is beautiful in their own right !!! 💕 However, I do recognize that in some particular instances, like in my case, there are some homesteaders and hobbyists that are interested in a specific breed of rabbit, and that’s okay too, as long as rabbits are treated with the upmost respect and kindness !!! I detest using rabbits for MEAT 🍖, how horrible, but in my rural area I like to spread awareness that rabbits can be an integral component to small-scale organic farming to raise MORE VEGGIES for your family to eat and also my bunnies have wool that can be used for spinning yarn to make hats and scarves etc. In addition to being crucial livestock animals for the homestead almost as essential as chickens, they are amazingly loving pets at the same time. PS. Chickens have just as many thoughts and emotions as a rabbit, they can make great pets with incredible bonds to their owner; so can horses and goats and pigs. All animals deserve to be treated even better than just what is considered humane. However, very understandably, if a family can’t sacrifice human living space for a bunny, I PROMISE you that most animals in general enjoy living outside or indoor/outdoor if they are given proper shelter and quality living conditions (and human engagement/affection) throughout the day.

Of course the cat is a predator and the rabbit is a prey animal that is a herbivore but if you can house a cat then you can pretty much house a rabbit indoors (it's fine to let them outside as long as they have supervision and are not left outside in a cage all day and night exposed to extreme whether and predators). You're angry, frustrated and you want to blow up, but you need to stay calm and choose your words carefully, because if you blow up, you might get satisfaction for yourself, but the other person is probably the one who's going to suffer for it. Often enough the conversation partner is just waiting for you to lose your temper, because that's the point where they can start dismissing what you say and push the responsibilities away from themselves. Really good job on the phonecall, respect!

Here in West Virginia, we have several species of what we call "chicken hawks" because they predate adult chickens, as well as the largest species of owls in North America, coyotes, stray cats, foxes, bobcats, black rat snakes etc. Growing up, we've lost bunnies, kittens, small dogs, and many chickens to mostly red-tailed hawks and great horned owls. Anything under 5 pounds can be grabbed and flown off with in the blink of an eye. (This means animals like adult Yorkies can be carried right off.) And that's without even getting into terrestrial predators that can be just as speedy and sneaky. I don't know if it's just ignorance or what, but it just seems ridiculous to me that some people put little prey animals outside and just expect nothing to happen to them. Do they also run every stop sign and just hope they don't get hit too, or is it just their pets lives that they feel so flippantly about? Blows my mind

Hi, I have had rabbits for over 30 years, and all have died eventually by old age. I do keep my bunnies inside at night in a cage not loose ,and they do roam around downstairs in the day time , they learned to go toilet in a hay box discreetly hidden from view. HOWEVER. I think it also important for them to be outside as well. On grass, and fresh air. As long as they have shade, water , and safe enclosure that is covered on top , incase of bird predators.Plus you must keep an eye on things . It’s their natural behaviour. And they just love lying on the grass, eating it as well.

That phone call was intense. The topic is a hard one, that's for sure, which is why I figured I'd post a comment. I've had three rabbits over my lifetime. The first one was given to us and, as I was middle school aged, the rabbit's living arrangements were set by my parents. He lived on an outdoor, screened in porch for 11 years. Now it was a screened porch but the screen was by no means obsolete. Thankfully nothing dangerous ever happened to him, but as a result of living outdoors, we weren't very close and he never bonded with any of us. He wasn't sociable, didn't like being held or petted much and tended to want to be on his own most of the time. He lived a simple life and passed away of old age. Now, fast forward, I'm living on my own and have two rabbits which both live indoors. HUGE DIFFERENCE! My first rabbit set the standard of what I thought all rabbits were like. Standoffish, indifferent and uninterested in humans. But my word was I wrong! My two bunny's now are the exact opposite. They both love human interaction and throw themselves onto your lap whenever possible. They'll lick, nuzzle and chase you to get your attention and only pout or get moody when I've been away for the day. They have expressive personalities, love playing with toys, enjoy running around the house following me wherever I go, and we eat dinner together each night. Anyway, I just thought I'd share that. The more you give your bunny, the more you get out of them. They do have personalities, but it takes time to see that. And that time is put to better use if they're a part of your life directly and have access to you just as often as a dog would. They have to be comfortable and you have to give them time, just like you would with any other pet. So yes, can they live outside, of course. Humans could live in closets too, but that wouldn't be in their best interest and they'd suffer because of that. I know that some people can't bring their bunnies inside, like I couldn't with my first bunny (Because of circumstances). But if you can, or have the chance to do so (or fight for the chance to do so), I'd highly recommend it. Even if just for the social benefits that it brings both parties. Anyway, just my two cents since I've been in both situations and have seen the benefits and disadvantages first hand. Hope this is helpful to anyone with questions. :D

The phone call part, it’s good that you stressed bunnies need to be indoors but everyone raises their bunnies different and in this situation if the bunny is happier outdoors then i would think outside is the better place but my main concern was there is no lid to the X pen a Hawk could easily swoop down and snatch it up, my point is I was expecting you to go over more issues not just staying to the topic of indoor or outdoor like no shade, kind of small ,no toys to chew on ect. If I owned my own home I’d bring my nine rescues inside in a heart beat. I did the best I could and worked really hard on creating the buns their own homes which are basically big enclosed sheds that are painted like barns .They have hardwood flooring multiple levels and are actually quite warm in the winter although where I live winter doesn’t get that cold and usually covering the windows up will make it warm. They come inside when super cold. They came from living in a industrial area dodging forklifts big trucks etc. They are happy well taken care of and know what it is to be loved. Their home has slowly been upgraded from bare bones to what it is today. They use litter bins and have all the hay they could want. My landlord wouldn’t let me keep any inside and where I live it costs 1.5 million for a run down 2 bedroom single story house. Even if you get the money people line up down the the block to see the house and make a offer and the seller usually gets over asking and buyers can’t request a home inspection because they will get passed on and lose the house. So although mine are technically outside rabbits they have own house with 7 foot ceilings you can walk right into and interact with them. It’s completely sealed so no mice or rats can get in and it’s next to impossible to break open the sturdy thick doors with locks to get them .
