Thank you for another informative video Lorelei! My little guy was store bought for $50. He was a graduation gift and a pandemic pet given to me by my mother. It took me months to bond with him, he had a lot of fur issues. He was balding in weird areas. He was always scratching too. I was nervous but I never gave up on him. Due to my previous experiences with losing my bunnies when I was younger, I really dedicated my time to research and learn so much. Thanks to you and all the research that I have done, he has been a healthy boy at 2 years young now, he loves to flop and do zoomies. He is my best friend and he lounges while I grade homework or just do work in general. Thank you for all your great advice Lorelei, I try to pass on your knowledge to new bunny owners that I meet. With Easter coming around, a lot of people want rabbits and I make sure to explain what the reality of owning one is.

I just can't get behind buying animals as if they are products in any circumstance, especially when pure breeds are at a much higher risk for a plethora of health issues. It's just the pure embodiment of human selfishness over animals to breed them for our use and aesthetic preferences. Most rabbits historically have been bred for meat, fur, and lab use, and now of course aesthetics. None of the traits we breed rabbits for is in the interest of the animal's health or wellbeing. With rabbits constantly being overpopulated in shelters, please please PLEASE adopt a rabbit that needs a home, and don't support people who are adding to the issue of overpopulation while profiting off of animal's bodies.

Sometimes the breed that you want the most isn’t available for adoption and that’s an uncommon circumstance that I’ve hit myself as I was looking for angoras and there was none to adoption so I had to search for an ethical one... I think it extremely depends on where you get it from- if adoption is possible definitely do it but if it’s not then find the closest ETHICAL breeder These are just very unlikely circumstances that people can run into and it’s just something to work around but either way it’s best to never support the unethical breeders and support the ethical ones when needed that way it encourages more ethical breeders
@paresseuxdesneiges Жыл бұрын
@@sunglowwolf-7917 but why want a specific breed ???
@sunglowwolf-7917 Жыл бұрын
@@paresseuxdesneiges so sometimes people have dogs or cats and sometimes it’s better to get a large breed rabbit vs a smaller breed rabbit or perhaps you want a rabbit that (barely) sheds (that would be the rex) or perhaps you love knitting and rabbits too so an angora would be the perfect choice for you- or perhaps you are looking for a specific personality trait more commonly found in specific breeds or sizes of rabbits (ie contis and Flemish have a calm more relaxed temperament for example vs rexs have a very cuddly and wants attention constantly from their owners typically and loves being petted at any time and place vs my mixed rabbit who is a stubborn hecker and gives me the cold shoulder if I pet him for to long 😂 ) if you aren’t looking for a specific breed or don’t know what you’re looking for then the best option is to look and meet the rabbits in the shelters and if you still haven’t found any that connects with you but you know a breed you might want then it wasn’t for nothing (and note that this is a rare situation but some people are just picky like that- ira I picked out when I wasn’t picky as much and turns out we get along so much because we have similar temperaments and loves attention from each other but doesn’t want it over done with each other if that makes sense? Anyways you get the point) It all depends on the person and the situation tho again these situations may be rare and obviously it’s gonna be easier adopting than searching for an ethical breeder (which believe me it took MONTH just to find two in my whole state) so definitely recommend adoption but it’s not for everyone This can be applied to dogs and cats as well too by the way
@garden.of.thistles Жыл бұрын
@@sunglowwolf-7917 So, that's assuming that you just absolutely NEED to have a specific breed of rabbit, and are unwilling to wait or look around a bit harder to see if that type of rabbit will show up in a shelter or from an adoption program ... I'm sorry but that just honestly comes off as shallow and a bit self-centered to me. There is no such thing as an 'ethical' or 'reputable' breeder, these are quite literally just buzzwords that breeders use to make people feel better about buying from them. They aren't regulated terms. Anyone can self-proclaim themselves to be ethical it doesn't actually have a definition. I'd even go as far as to argue that forcing an animal to go through pregnancy multiple times, keeping them unspayed/neutered which keeps them in a state of higher stress and gives them an increased risk for reproductive cancers, is simply wrong in itself. When you support breeding, you support the use and profit off of the breeding animal's bodies. Breeding animals usually die very young because of the stress their bodies go through, or from cancer. Breeding more rabbits into existence while millions of others are being euthanized in shelters is always going to be wrong, and I don't think simply wanting a specific looking rabbit is a good enough excuse to support breeders instead of adoption. Supporting breeders also just directly feeds into the mindset that animals are products before they are individuals. A lot of breeds that come with innate health issues, such as Holland Lops (whom oftentimes are deaf and develop breathing issues due to the shape of their heads) or angoras (who have a higher risk for intestinal blockages), dwarfs (lung issues), literally only exist because people want them to exist and believe that their health issues are somehow worth the aesthetics. People argue all the time that they just REALLY WANT a Holland Lop because they're SO CUTE, and so breeders keep breeding them into existence and this business stays profitable at the expense of the rabbits quality of life. Whereas if that same person just got over THEIR selfish desire to want a specific looking rabbit, maybe they'd be willing to adopt another rabbit that actually needs a home. Rabbits are always going to exist and need homes, they are feral almost everywhere in the world, we still breed them for meat, fur, and lab use, there's no reason to also breed them just because we selfishly want a specific aesthetic. I'm sorry if this comment was really harsh, I want people to seriously think hard about this topic and know all the facts, and I just really think you need a better reason then "I want" to choose supporting the breeding industry.

I loved the breakdown of their personalities on the first few - it described my two bunnies personalities (a mini lop & lionhead) so perfectly! I always just thought it was from whatever they experienced before we adopted but now I see it's more a trait of their breed. Very cool.

We adopted a pair from a rescue in London last week. They're bonded and love their new home, they're some kind of lop cross. Adoption of rabbits isn't very well established in the UK yet, there are lots of well run dog and cat rescues, but rabbits rarely have their own dedicated rescues, and the one's that do exist are usually run by well meaning but overrun individual volunteers. The selling of rabbits needs to be better regulated to take the strain of these rescues.

I've had 6 bunnies in total. 4 of them were siblings. 3/4 of them were Lion Heads. They were Flemish giant/Lion Head mixes. Another of the 6 lived with them for a while. We got 2 of them when they were a few months old and the other 2 and the other that lived with them when they were older. The other bunny, our most recent addition, was rescued by my aunt in her back yard. She knew we had bunnies so she asked us about taking her and we decided to. She's the only girl bunny we've had out of the 6 and she's an albino Lion Head. She litter trained herself and she's very clean and a good bunny. Besides her, we still have the other bunny that wasn't one of the siblings. All of our bunnies were free. ❤

Every breed is so uniquely beautiful. I often struggle with how they can be so adorable, and if we even deserve these magical souls. I once had to move from CA to PA and fought ridiculously hard to get my bunny with me in my seat on a flight. They will always try to get you to store your animals under the plane. I said your literally asking me to let my pet suffer a horrible death. I’m not going to lie, and I’m not proud of this but I had to have my now ex husband pull out his military ties for them to even listen to us. Funny all of the sudden then they were willing to allow my rabbit to fly with me. And allowed me to get scanned by the machine without my rabbit having to go through it at all. Everyone who saw her instantly smiled like a little child and gushed over her cuteness. Which honestly filled my heart with joy that so many were smitten over her. It’s just a shame that you have to be considered “important “ to get people to understand your worries and needs. If my ex hadn’t been in the military idk if we would of been accommodated. I told him I wouldn’t leave without knowing for sure that she was allowed on my lap, and if they denied me when we got there, I wouldn’t be getting on the flight.

Maple is a Harlequin Lionhead and Ash is an Opal Agouti Lionhead 🥰 Ash is definitely single-maned, but Maple has a much thicker coat so she could be double 🤷🏼♀️ their mum and sister have standard coats and their mum was so friendly. When I was getting my bunnies I originally tried going through a rescue but it seemed like they were judging me as a "hardcore male who's probably gonna feed them to his snake" or something. So I went to a pet store instead and it must've been both of our lucky days bc I met a litter of 8 week old Rex's. The dude originally told me $400 a piece. So I was planning on getting 2 so they can grow up together, but then they only ended up charging me $50 per bun. But I think the fact that they got to grow up with me in the same home and never having been through being abandoned, or bouncing from shelter to shelter or being abused, I think has it's advantages. Both of my buns are perfectly house trained buns. Never to this day did either of them pee in the house. Or poop even for that matter. From 8 weeks old they knew exactly how to bunny 😆 they are like my little kids

Mine are primarily pets but they are still WORK, I wouldn't suggest them for anyone who isn't into fiber arts because you need to brush multiple times a week and you need high protein feed.

I have a question. During seasonal changes, the wild birds get real loud at night. Do you think them being loud will be too much for a bunny or will it be okay?

Why don't you stay with your rabbit the first few times so she can see you're not alarmed and everything's fine?

My bunny was all warm and soft. I used to kiss her little face and tickle her whiskers! She used to sleep with me in my bed when it was cold outside. She was only supposed to last for 4-6 years and ended up living until she was 8 1/2 she only died because she got bunny cancer! Her fur was so silky and soft. She was as docile as pie! she used to let me pet her for hours a day. I fed her fruit and veg as well as dandelions and herbs she liked. She was not just a pet, but a best friend too, little cutie that she was!!!! RIP
