The only episode of SNL where cue cards are not used is the episode guest starring Macaulay Culkin who did memorize all of his lines. The cast wasn’t about to be shown up by a preteen so they all went without cue cards.

@@aboutashow I think there was likely a certain amount of complacency at the root of the issue. Kate may have been deeply unhappy with it, but she likely at the time thought that he was still a joke candidate, so why not go along with the joke for one episode to stroke the ego of a high-profile guest, and go back to lambasting him later. Nowadays, it would make perfect sense for people to quit a show that booked Trump as a guest, but back in late 2015, such a move would have been likely seen as petty and ridiculous, and could have easily backfired. Also, I think to a certain extent the threat of quitting is not the solution that some people think it is. Yes, it is a good way to show you are not complicit, but it can have major negative personal consequences. More importantly, it can be seen as an abdication of responsibility - vacating the situation and leaving someone else to deal with it. In most cases, particularly where key people quit the Trump administration, they were simply replaced with compliant yes-men, which directly worsened the situation. Kate McKinnon leaving, as both the most consistently funny cast member at the time, and one of the most vocally progressive cast members, would not have just impacted her, but it likely would have had unpredictable and major knock-on effects on her coworkers and the show itself. Yes, if they had ALL dropped out they could have gotten away with it, but for many of them, they probably didn't want to risk their big break for what at the time seemed like a harmless indulgence of a candidate who was bound to lose. Unfortunately, the humanisation that Donald Trump got in both this SNL episode and the Fallon interview, probably planted a seed in a lot of people's heads to give him the benefit of the doubt. He was no longer just an obnoxious, narcissistic racist, but he was now an obnoxious, narcissistic racist who was willing to make fun of himself and engage with a show that had repeatedly mocked him for decades, showing a humility and graciousness that he could not have got through other routes.

I remember hearing that Trump's team revised every single sketch to make sure Trump looked good in all of them. Also i believe a cast member said that almost everyone felt incredibly uncomfortable filming this episode given that it had been so twisted out that it just felt like one big ad for trump, and that most cue cards were changed last minute so they had no idea what they we're saying for the most part, and they had no other choice than to go with whatever was written on them, because they couldn't just refuse to deliver their line.

Although it makes me curious about your opinion on late-night comedy shows like colbert, fallon, Mayers (might be spelled wrong I don't watch it). They all love to talk about Trump but never go the full distance. When he does something silly like the beans thing or a weird tweet, these moralizing comedian jump on it immediately and forget the war crimes and election fraud just like that. Just when I believe these people take politics seriously, they go along with Trump's stunts to turn it into a big joke.

I've never noticed the cue card-no eye contact thing, and I was watch every week. I'm pretty sure that it's usually less obvious though, so it could've just been that the sketches were written that night, so no one had time to memorize them. They usually wait until the last minute to write the cold open, since it's more topical. Also when the host is super famous (like a presidential candidate) they get to be more particular about things, so Trump could've made them change it at the last second.

I know this came out six months ago but as a casual fan of SNL (comedy being highly subjective makes a show like SNL, being also on a tight writing schedule and working around host abilities/ideas, means the shows are hits and misses), you hit the nail on the head. I've only seen a couple sketches from this episode (I, like many Americans, cannot stand to hear Trump's voice) and all of them have been absolutely devoid of comedy, or joy, or interest. Allowing Trump to host was a great disappointment and from both a political and comedic standpoint, the episode was a colossal failure. I expect the writers were told that they could not write anything outright critical of Trump and that the sketches were vetted heavily before rehearsal by his people, because I cannot imagine a single human being who would be proud to put their name on those scripts. The cue cards issues change depending on the sketch, some sketches are switched in at the last minute (usually after the noon dress rehearsal when test audiences see the show), so a really strong sketch that has had few rewrites over the week will usually do pretty well versus a sketch that was brought in at the last moment after a worse idea was struck.

They always stare out into the audience and at the cue cards, they never look at eachother naturally and perform like with the time with will Farrell performed and Chris Farley.
@TheMrsmartass13
@TheMrsmartass13 3 жыл бұрын
Chris Farley and Will Farrell would look a que cards everyone did, Chris was so nervous he would look to remember a line, unless it was a character he knew, alot of the cast are good in their own respective ways, but sometimes you need a que card to just remember where you're at, sketches are written at the beginning of the week and work on It form there, and with every actors different life styles it would be assumed not everyone would remember your lines, even Dana Carvey and Mike Myers read their cards once in a while, but one of the best for not reading their cards was Phil Hartman, he was a legend in his own right.

Just clarifying the reason they haven’t memorised line is because for a good chunk of dialogue of the show they are reading for the first time on the teleprompter. The writers often change chunks of the script from the one rehearsal to the live show. To keep it fresh and to throw the actors off.
@positivelybobbie
@positivelybobbie 3 жыл бұрын
The only writer I’ve heard of deliberately trying to throw a cast member off is John Mulaney for Stefon. Yeah I agree that the scripts change and get edited before the show hence the need for cue cards in the first place but the performers typically get a heads up about that happening.

You probably weren't asking for realsies BUT just in case - the cue card reliance is supposed to be part of the "scrappy, last-minute appeal of the show" that Lorne Michaels champions for SNL. Could be misremembering. It has been a bit since I've watched the show or read up on its history (and I think the sketch you're talking about was the sketch I decided to stop watching the show on). Awesome video as always Leo!

This sort of stuff is what gave Trump ammunition for his constant complaints about 'Hollywood hypocrisy' - all these performers were quite happy to partner up with him, no matter how repugnant his campaign statements, right up until whoops! he actually got elected, and suddenly they were copping flak for helping to make him more palatable to the electorate.

You aren't wrong, I tend to watch SNL whenever I can nowadays and the best thing I can say about it is that nowadays it's incredibly hit or miss. It's basically just another cog in the machine that is the entertainment industry, it exists to promote not just actors but also musicians, in the same way that a late night talk show appearance exists to serve the machine as well. There are some rare gems from modern SNL, but generally speaking it's not the 70's anymore. I think the most brilliant cast member the show has picked up in modern times is actually Kate McKinnon. Her ability to do impressions and play characters both male and female is unbelievable.
