When I was in high school in the early 2010s I was in band with a couple other openly queer girls. During one competition one of the underclassmen in my section had passed out on the bud ride there and a couple girls but makeup on him as a prank. He didn’t realize it until after our first practice run when all the macho dudes started making fun of him. He very confidently said “oh, that must be why I see better, it’s keeping the sun out of my eyes.” This not only kept the guys from making fun of him but made it become a popular practice for both the boys and girls to wear eye liner during marching season. The teacher initially tried to ban it but caved when so many people claimed it was helping their performance on a year when we were winning a lot of awards… and bc a bunch of the girls stuck up for him saying the boys should have just as much right to wear makeup and jewelry as the girls had. The original guy later confided in me and the other queer girls that he had originally just made something up to keep the guys from making fun of him but had never fessed up bc he decided he liked wearing makeup and this gave him a safe outlet, and a little bc it was funny to see all these super macho dudes wearing and defending wearing eye liner for “tactical reasons”. He was a straight cis guy, he said he just felt more comfortable confiding in us since we were the first people to stick up for him and bc we openly dressed unconventionally for our gender. It’s really nice to think you were an influence to kids learning to be better to each other.

glad your cousin got that easy bake oven! in my own experience as a bi cis woman, I remember during my childhood it was generally more acceptable for girl children to play with toys marketed to boys than it was for boy children to play with toys marketed for girls. definitely a double standard where boys got the short end of the stick though
@Randomd0g3 жыл бұрын
Probably entrenched in the idea that “girls are weak, and boys are strong” so by association anything that girls like/is marketed towards girls are “unworthy” for a boy. If a girl wants something for boys, that means that she’s strong, and standing up for herself, and has more agency than all those other girls. But if a boy likes a girl toy he’s weak and there’s something wrong with him. Its an insult to both girls and boys, and creates an incredibly unhealthy relationship between kids and their own identities. If a girl wants to feel like shes respected, she has to reject everything pink and feminine to say shes “not like the other girls.” And if a boy wants to continue to fit in, he has to completely reject everything pink and feminine to stay manly.

I agree that male oriented branding is a bit wierd, but there is a large push, I see online, of shedding the old ways of masculinity. As a guy it kinda sucks because if I do something that makes me feel manly and/or more masculine cause I'm seen as pushing an archaic gendered society when all I want is too feel good about myself. The activities, like chopping firewood or shooting guns (or other make identified hobbies) themselves shouldn't be only for men since it can give everyone a sense of power and satisfaction with themselves, but pursuing a more masculine feeling with a product, like the bar of soap that smells of fire and whiskey, shouldn't be looked down upon as it gives everyone a chance to feel more masculine
@LeoVader3 жыл бұрын

@HylianPirate2783 жыл бұрын
I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with wanting to be masculine and there are all sorts of ways to be totally manly/masculine in a non-toxic way. IMO the problem isn't with shooting guns or chopping firewood, it's declaring that all those who don't do those things somehow lack balls, that lacking balls is a bad thing and that men have to be aggressive and hypersexual. From what I've seen, people who engage in things like that while not being toxic assholes are celebrated and considered pretty cool.
@HylianPirate2783 жыл бұрын
TL;DR It's not the manly aesthetic that's a problem (honestly it's kinda neat) it's the hostile and toxic attitude that often accompanies products like these.
@LOONACORE3 жыл бұрын
love the masculine aesthetic and you should never feel guilty for it. remember even if your social circle of lefty friends are vocal about "toxic masculinity", being masculine as a cis man is still the way for men to be that is praised most by society... the issue with these hypermasculine adverts are that theyre preying on your insecurities and fear of emasculation instead of uplifting you for the wholesome aspects of masculinity. edit; especially when that predatory advertising glorifies the abuse & objectification of women - nothing masculine about that

It feels like 99% of the time in this kind of discourse, people who aren't actually cisn't themselves just entirely forget that we exist unless we point it out to them, and even then they usually just sort of wave us away as some totally unimportant edge case and immediately forget about us again. It's always just so refreshing and reassuring to see other people, like, recognizing us and actually taking our experiences into account, even (*especially!*) if they can't fully relate to that experience themselves. May I suggest the Bloodshot Dam combat loop for the background music of the next video?

thank you, I've been so sick of those "you're a stupid man who uses bad product, women will only want you if you use our product". Dr. Squatch and ManScaped both come to mind

"hows that for toxic masculinity" yeah i mean pretty good and very accurate. god the people who hear the problems with toxic masculinity and are too scared to actually take a step back and look at themselves to instead revel in said toxicity are so gross and vile. theyre such a massive issue in the world.

Speaking on guys using makeup to cover acne: I’m trans (born male) and I started transitioning in high school, so I can say from experience that if you dont wear lipstick, eyeshadow, or anything else super noticeable, then literally none of the boys will notice There is some truth to the fact that the average straight male does not look close enough to notice changes like that XD

this is such an interesting video for me because i'm...not a man, so it's hard to know how men actually consume this type of advertising beyond the two insane extremes. banger of a vid again dude!
