Chappell's a fucking genius in her lyricism (not to mention her vocals and her musical instincts). On 60+ listens to the full album -- and the privilege of getting to see Chappell perform the whole album live in May -- I still didn't get the full depth of meaning to the "can you play a fucking beat??!!" bits, and their relation to "Does it happen? NO!", until Taylor, on one listen, delved into it. Brilliant. It's my favorite album of new music in YEARS -- a masterpiece, as she said -- and now I appreciate it even more. Thanks, Taylor!

You 100% need to watch her Tiny Desk concert. Eventually her concert appearances too. But the Tiny Desk is a fantastic mini-set of her best songs, and more than almost anything else, a view into the character she's created. Seriously. She's got the crowd there in the palm of her hand from moment one, both with her singing and some pretty hilarious bits in between songs. You get ideal sound engineering too.

It seems like she fell in love with a close friend, and maybe they tried to be more, but it didn’t work out. The love was still there, just rearranged. It’s definitely a euphoric song especially the chorus. I don’t think it’s a heartbreak song! I certainly listen to this song in a love way to relate to my life. But I also feel there is a hint of foreshadowing to events that happen later in the album when she has her “rise and fall of a Midwest princess” with the lines “I just wanna get to know you. Guess I didnt quite think it through. Fell in love with the thought of you.” To me she fell in love with the thought of a potential relationship and the sexual chemistry in the moment, however later the other person doesn’t want the same things Chappell wants. I love music because we all can interpret things in so many ways🥰 this song is a bop😌

Reminds me, thanks too for showing that "...back at my house I have a California King!" is an homage to a Rhianna lyric. I'd never have known, I'm the opposite of "pop princesses" target demographics, and mostly a rock n roll guy. But a landmark album is a landmark album, and I've been a huge fan of and advocate for "Midwest Princeds" since first hearing and being rocked by it in March. I also agree with you that in Red Wine Supernova, Chappell/the protagonist is in over her head, near to hooking up with a female player, and, while eager, realizing she wants to slow it down before she consumates this powerful instinct she's having.

Btw, IRL Chappell only had a twin bed until age 25... which was last year, 2023! She had very little money until signing with Island Records last year to put out Midwest Princess. She and Dan Nigro knew they had made a monster album, and, as she's said, she "had a lot of leverage" in choosing and negotiating with a new label. She can finally afford that California King now.
