Yes! When I heard the then-modern 60s lilt used to intro I Could Have Danced All Night, I thought the tune was about to be a dud, but, wow, what she did with it. Fantastic. And then, that superb arrangement making a medley with segue themes of old and new. I wonder who wrote the chart. Definitely a top arranger, whoever he was.

She did do a bit of theater. I remember seeing print ads for Lesley in a production of Funny Girl in either 1968 or 1969. I was a teen then and was hoping I could see her. I did getto see her in the 80s and early 00s (before Ever Since, which Ilove).
@stevemichaelsmichaels46462 жыл бұрын
When Mercury Records dropped her in the late 60s, Lesley turned to doing summer stock ("There's a Girl In My Soup" with Bill Bixby; "Finnian's Rainbow", and others. In 1970 she signed with Crewe Records (Bob Crewe's label) and recorded several singles. Bob's company went bankrupt and Lesley was without a label.

Funfacts: Lesley's first hit, "It's My Party" was produced by Quincy Jones. She went on to write some of the songs for the hit movie "Fame." She was an out lesbian at a time when that could have been a career- killer, but she just chose to live her life. She and her partner were together for 33 years until her death.

Actually, out in a limited way as late as her 2001 A&E biography she omitted her private life to the airways Officially it was 2004 when she came out publicly I can give you links. I'm well aware she was open in certain circles but not the public at large till 2004 There are so many that want to make her life all about her bedroom and I feel sorry for those that let that overshadow one of the great talents of the 20th century My whole channel is dedicated to Lesley and her talent Her private life had nothing to do with her love of singing and music She was beautiful inside and out. Lesley started out with boyfriends and was going to get married funny how some want to ignore that part of her life sadly, her only biography in print also leans to her private life over her amazing talent and drags in politics of events that had nothing to do with her music

I never cease to ponder on the challenges inherent for some singers to extend their career beyond the initial hits. Could Leslie have reinvented herself, found new exciting material to harness her talent, while her career flourished in each decade for every new generation? Can’t help but recall Ricky Nelson’s “Garden Party”, and the line “..But if memories were all I sang, I’d rather drive a truck”. Never realizing the reward of record royalties, and relegated to Oldies Shows and the like, I wish our Beloved Pop Princess would’ve enjoyed a successful renaissance. No doubt she loved her original adoring fans, and co-wrote some great music, but she left a meager 50K to her wife which makes me sad. Her choices, professionally and personally were hers, but she deserved more staying power, and a creative team who could’ve possibly helped with a whole new body of work. 💓

Same could be said of Bobby Rydell, who just died. He had such talent, early fame and then his career faltered.
@skyavalanche2 жыл бұрын
Claudio de Rochefoucault Indeed. I recently expressed the same sentiment about Gary Puckett, whose voice I adore. Like Leslie, Bobby, and so many others, they are shackled by the hits that brought them to prominence, and while still attempting to earn a living, must take on the enormous and courageous feat of reinvention to gather new, and enduring fans.
@hudsony7772 жыл бұрын
@@skyavalanche Yes, it was a pitfall of the industry and I guess still is. For me, Rydell was important because he's one of the first names I remember recognizing as a famous singer when I was a little boy. Sinatra was an exception and Judy Garland. They both were able to move on and grow up. They weren't stuck. Even "The Fifth Dimension" wound up with oldie revival shows. All these talented artists...chained to their pasts. But they all somehow adapted and grew with smaller careers.
