Lesley Hazleton: The doubt essential to faith

When Lesley Hazleton was writing a biography of Muhammad, she was struck by something: The night he received the revelation of the Koran, according to early accounts, his first reaction was doubt, awe, even fear. And yet this experience became the bedrock of his belief. Hazleton calls for a new appreciation of doubt and questioning as the foundation of faith -- and an end to fundamentalism of all kinds.

you know, I am muslim and I respect people who doubt and looking for truth. muhammed was doubting about religion but in the same time he was looking for the truth. no matter who you are and no matter what's your religion just be open mind and doubt. this who we are, we are human not animals or angels. I think god created people with brain and give them freedom so people can think and also choose their path and every one is responsible for his mistake. If you think you right because you born in hindu or christian or muslim or jewish community and others are wrong this is first mistake you do for yourself. you can't judge anybody just do the right thing and behave good (show forgiveness, enjoin kindness, and turn away from the ignorant )

As too was of Prophet Muhammad that message now overwhelm Lezley.. Her views are welcome as they are dispassionate & exploratory... Atleast she is getting a sense that this work called The Quran in the time period it was done cannot be a human compilation altho for sure it could be dictated.... So let’s investigate was it a human dictation or a little more of who ‘s it can be & the answer is ALSO given in the QURAN .... Prophet Muhammad put a claim of being part Godly but pure human... As per Quran the biggest SIN in the Quran is to feign equality or part Godly.... So then it becomes meaningful that NO human could have compiled this Treatise “ The Living Code of Life as desired by GOD for humans to live by as they endeavour to qualify to be lifted to the next level aka the heavenly abode !!!

" Real faith has no easy answers. It's difficult and stubborn. It involves an ongoing struggle, a continual questioning of what we think we know, a wrestling with issues and ideas. It goes hand in hand with doubt in a never ending conversation with it, and sometime in conscious defiance of it. " .. This brought tears into my eyes.. so true!

For years I've been seeking answer to the violence and intolerance of religious people from all creed, I even thought that the Buddhist are exception, but after what happened in Myanmar they aren't the exception, I taught that the Atheist are exception but after what happened in China, where Believers are put in Camps, they aren't the exception ....You lady (Lasley Hazeleton) did answer my question, " Doubt is the Heart of matter, Abolish all doubt and what's left is not Faith, but absolute Hearth less Conviction" You are Absolutely correct, even God / Allah ask us to believe not to prove his existence...Believe is knowing plus doubt, if you eliminate the doubt you are left Certainty, Certainty requires evidence, no one can can proof or disproof the existence of Allah / God... If you are left with believe (Knowing+Doubt), you have to practice your believe on yourself only and not get anyone else involved with you. God / Allah was clear that the judgement will on the individual level. not by groups. So thank you Lovely lady, you have been an enlightenment to us.

You can prove God and you will be surprised about how easy it is. Without going into a ramble I'll comment one proof if you want but here I'll just focus on what you said about violence. First of all Christianity, Judaism and Islam are religions created by the same God through different guides (prophets) of humanity. There is a verse in the Quran about how every nation has been sent a prophet and one nation has even had 3 prophets sent together. That is 3 just for one group of people. It is not unlikely that a prophet is sent to people with a holy book but then the people either claim that the prophet is God (like with Jesus because of the miracles God had given him) or maybe they change the holy book after the prophet has died. If you want to know if religion is violent or not don't look at the "followers" but rather look at the leaders. Look at the prophet of Islam and Imam Ali (a.s.) and not ISIS. If I want to know how good chef Gordon Remsy is at cooking should I look at him or should I look at my mums cooking because she follows him on facebook or twitter? 😂 People are ignorant and religion is like a sharp knife. A knife is not good nor evil rather if you use it to cut food to eat or give food to the homeless it is good but if you kill someone with it then it is bad but it your fault not the knife because you chose to use it for bad. If you believe in God that makes you not afraid to die which is good but if you think wrongly God wants you to explode yourself to go paradise thats not what Quran or prophet (saws) says

@@captainhd9741 I'm assuming you are Shia cause your teaching came from Imam Ali, which i have nothing but love love and admiration for the imam, I even read a big portion of " Nahj al balagha". My agreement with this lovely lady is based on preserving the " doubt" as tool to use in this earth journey that the creator blessed us.. Nothing is 100% clear not in religion neither in science.. Millions of scientists came up with theories and understanding that today we know they were wrong, that doesn't Discredit that efforts or questions their intelligence but instead strengthen our understanding that doubt keep us researching and looking for more and more, that's how evolve as specie.. If we stopped looking we would never get to the point we are in today.. The same apply on faith and God, imam Ali explained the Quran based on his time, his ideas was an inspiration of his time.. As you know Islam is universal and eternal, explain to me how are going to convince a Japanese man that " Ahl al beit" do miracles? Today the human mind evolved from miracles and focus on research.. Allah designed existence this way, as humans understand more of this universe, God in book became more and more real, cause all this beauty can't be random, it must have an Architect, the Architect is Allah.. Doubt helps us to keep us going .. If you read the Qur'an today, without any previous interpretation, you are going to discover, that it's the book from a devine..
@biology6647
@biology6647 4 жыл бұрын
this idea that crystal clear conviction is a source of all violence on earth is also not the ultimate truth and you should also doubt this idea and find more answers., doubt is a part of the road but not the final destination of a believer. only the complete conviction of heart brings light in heart and it blossoms us with blissful joy. the environment of this universe and we ourselves are equipped with everything to come to the certainty after passing through skepticism. yes doubts appear on the mirror of hearts but they are not essential elements to preserve them in hearts because they wil grow. according to you faith equals knowing plus doubt and conviction is a source of evil need further research.

My doubts felt like they were tearing me apart my faith. Now I realise my doubts are essential to my faith; they keep me human and real. They stop me from being caught up in the bubble of "truth" and becoming dogmatic. My agnostic ways of thinking allow me to relate, reach out and listen to what others have to say. My doubts don't make my faith a failure. My doubts are the evidence of my faith.

'After keeping company with Prophet Muhammad as a writer for the past five years, I can't see that he'd be anything, but utterly outraged at the militant fundamentalists who claim to speak and act in his name in the Middle East and elsewhere today. He'd be appalled at the repression of the half of the population because of their gender. He'd be torn apart by the bitter divisiveness of sectarianism. He'd call out terrorism for what it is - not only criminal, but an obscene travesty of everything he believed in and struggled for. He'd say what the Koran says: 'Anyone who takes a life, takes the life of all humanity. Two weeks later you bother get your results. Both of you passed. You look at your friends test and see all his answers were incorrect but yet he passed. That's injustice. Similarly life is a test that needs to be passed in order to achieve everlasting life in paradise. Islam teaches us how to be humans and not animals. +Zaiva UK 1400 years ago it was a normal for people to get married that young. If it was an issue during that time, Muhammads enemies would be sure to point it out. Documented history shows no such thing. He was called a liar, a soothsayer, a magician, and even a madman but never once did they mention his marriage. Look up history, you'll find many kings and nobles who married young too. Islam says the age of puberty is when a person becomes a man or woman. At 9, Aisha was a woman during that time. In 1978 my mom got married when she was 11 years old. Most of our mothers in that time (1950.. ) got married between 8 to 12 years old. It was very common in their time. So , what about 100 years ago or 200 years ago or even 500 years ago , It was abvious from historic books that the age of marriage starts from around 8-10 and before 8 years old was just a contract to hold the pride , especially if she has great traits and belongs to a respectful family. This is the way in that times ... So people be honest when criticizing and do not comment based on your empty brain from the history of nations.

Doubt is essential to faith like the dark is essential to light. However no belief can be formed if someone embraces the doubt, like nothing can be seen if someone embraces the dark. The ideal state is to see. Doubt is essential to faith like a war is essential to peace. The objective is peace, not war. Just because something is essential it does not necessarily mean that is the ideal way to be.

I agree with the part 'a person can be a Muslim by heart', (which I really really do hope Mrs Hazleton believes that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger by heart) but the part 'ONLY by heart' is not true according to the Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) because basically, to be a Muslim, one has to believe that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His messenger: 1)by heart 2) by saying the shahada 3) through practising Islam as the way of life. While I recognize that her approach is rather respectful and better than many, where is the public voice of a Muslim (not an apostate like Ali Hirsi or a pseudo-apostate like several Christian born Middle Easterners)? Why is no Muslim like Hamsa Yusuf or Tariq Ramadan allowed on American TV? Why must our Western introduction to Islam be so deliberately manipulated?
@Kingkejser

Cus islam is the truth, and mainstream western people are losing faith in Christianity and becoming atheist. If islam had a fair play ground, it would conquer the western world. So they need to pump all these propaganda into it, 60 thousand books has been writing against prophet Mohamed so far from western people. But Muslims will never loose our faith even in hardship. the truth will remain the truth until the end days

It's true what you say, although the zionist owned media does not give Muslims a voice, especially pertaining to the truth about Islam, the media prefers the lies and to encourage the stereotypes and lies. (Which wahhabis feed into). The other thing is, not many non-Muslims take the time to listen to our scholars and then say we have no voice. Lesley being a non-Muslim is listened to by many, but if she were a Muslim would she have the audience and ears? People expect to hear from Muslims exactly what Lesley says about Islam, so coming from a non-Muslim perhaps it has more impact on truth being told?

You guys have to understand that muslims is just as much a political tool for its enemies, as it is for its practitioners. It's a battle of narratives, this is not a western thing, this happens in all parts of the world of mass communication.

Morten Beirholm All religions have been infiltrated, including Islam. The wahhabis were originally funded by the British government and helped them to colonise the Arab countries (slaughtering Muslims along the way) This enabled Britain to grab Palestine and hand it over to the zionists. The wahhabi king saud was put on his throne by the British and conceitedly renamed Najd after himself to what we know today as Saudi Arabia. The British signed a treaty with the Sauds promising to protect them in the 1930's... a promise they have upheld ever since in return for a cut in the oil. America are business partners with the sauds (aramco) and also protect them (and their own interests) They have made use of the wahhabis on a number of occasions throughout history.. mainly to do their dirty work for them and spread propaganda and lies about Islam by portraying wahhabis in the zionist owned media. Al Qaeda was American founded, funded and CIA trained. They used zionist mossad agents as front men and mouth pieces to instil fear into the masses and thus create a world full of islamophobes which then creates a world full of Israel supporters who condone the genocide they commit. But Israel doesn't just want Palestine, it want a huge chunk of the Middle East, so using a mixture of wahhabis, mossad agents and US Military posing as Muslims they create the likes of ISIS too. Again creating bedlam in the surrounding Middle eastern countries also preventing them from attacking Israel in defence of Palestine... and of course to destabilise them with the intent of stealing them too. Zionism has hijacked not only Judaism, but Christianity too, and wahhabism has hijacked Islam. All are *political* infiltrations used as a tool for the illuminati agenda... this also has another agenda, the goal of removing religion and creating a world full of atheists so that they can then ban religion completely and enforce their own one world order and one world religion... with FEMA camps for those who do not obey. We have already been forewarned that in the end times the Qur'an will be removed and banned from the earth... hollywood (a hive of propaganda) has pushed it all at us for years hidden in plain sight.
@mortenbeirholm7979
@mortenbeirholm7979 9 жыл бұрын
While i know the historical reality of the incidents you mention, you still make it out as a coherent narrative, according to some kind of zionist master plan. Even though it makes more sense that some evil force is behind, I must object that I believe history to be much less coherent and arbitrary. You must not see this as a defense of or apathy towards the evils of zionist ideology, because I see some of the uprising alternatives too be like the Zionists in essence. I'm only making an objection to the coherence of the story, not the individual political facts you point out. I don't believe our leaders know what they are doing, the world is in itself far too complex.

Without any agenda, I honestly think (and I am not alone) it is a convincing and straightforward interpretation of the verse So if you are in doubt, [O Muhammad], about that which We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Scripture before you. The truth has certainly come to you from your Lord, so never be among the doubters (Quran 10:94), than the famous ones (currently), talking about the conditional usage in Arabic trying to overlook that the verse is directed to the prophet and the answer of the conditional is in singular discourse. It is interpretation where the interpretation is not needed in fact.

Just more of the same. We are to believe that all the negative aspects of "faith" can't have anything at all to do with "real" faith, and that one cannot have real faith without doubt, which seems to me to make only agnostic atheists the real faithful. What nonsense. If it's possible to delude oneself more thoroughly as to the real nature of the problems we face, I am not sure I have seen it. She does have one thing right however, and that is doubt is the solution. But doubt has nothing to do with faith. In fact doubt takes all the fun out of faith. People use faith as a way to make their lives easier by not having to constantly be reminded of our existential dilemmas. Why have faith at all, if this is not one of the benefits. Anyway, if this is wisdom, everything is wisdom.

Why not review Islam yourself and see where faith comes into all this. and your argument is not valid, we do not excuse reality with faith - everything is explained with reason - God is merciful, so why is there so much suffering? That is explained, and explained well enough for me to accept it as truth. Maybe you will as well.
@kozzmik
@kozzmik 9 жыл бұрын
Mohammad Al-Zawahreh I would venture to say that I probably know more about Islam than you do, so perhaps you could take your own advice. And Islam is just as absurd as Christianity is when it comes to theodicy. The bottom line is that given the amount of innocent suffering that goes on in this world, A better case can be made for either no god, or a god that is pure evil, than a god that is good, let alone perfectly good. You can pile nonsense on top of nonsense to try and explain this fact, but all you will ever succeed in doing, is numbing yourself to reality.

Mark Beronte Aahahahaha, know more about Islam than me? Did Mohammad (peace be upon him) see Allah completely? What verse of the Qur'an speaks about the light of Allah? what does it say? Why does fasting even exist? what is takwa? Is it okay to wish for death? when, if ever, is it permissible to wish for your own death? What are the obligations of marriage? what is the process of two people being wed? What does Allah say about alcohol in the Qur'an? Why am I even bothering with an ignorant bigot?

Mohammad Al-Zawahreh Didn't take long for you to start calling names did it? So let me get this straight, you think anyone that criticizes Islamic ideology is a "bigot"? Ok, how about other ideologies like Nazism, Christianity, Communism, Fascism, Capitalism: Are these also all off limits? Well I guess I shouldn't be too surprised by that answer. The Muslim world does lead the world in one area for sure, and that is in it's lack of respect for basic human rights like free speech. Thanks for making that clear.

As your claims contradict what Islam teaches - meaning you most certainly do not have more knowledge and bigot. Because you believe that you have a greater moral standing than me. Or Mohammad (peace be upon him) or anyone else. It's the fact that you think you KNOW everything, that everyone of faith is deluded to the clear truth... it is that, that makes you a BIGOT.

We should ask the question why someone who is agnostic and secular writes books on religion and significant religious figures. We should ask what would be the intention of such writer. The answer seems to be obvious but let’s begin with what would not be the intention of such writer. For sure such writer would not promote the faith or any religion. Such writer would not encourage you to explore the depth of your soul and to discover the importance of faith in your life. Such writer will not tell you that your dignity and integrity comes from strong faith in God. Then what would be the goal of so called “agnostic secular” writer? The primary goal would be to confuse you by providing pseudo-scientific materials which speculate on lives of religious figures. Such writer’s intention would be to deceive those of weak faith and to provide nonsense arguments for non-believers; atheists and agnostics. I invite all to be vigilant and to put efforts into reaching for authentic trustworthy sources of information instead of succumbing to speculative misrepresentations produced by the writer who advertises herself as agnostic. Faith is God’s grace which meets with natural spiritual longlines of the man. Faith is not something static. It is a living process, it is a continuing dialogue between man and God, and it is a very individual phenomenal spiritual experience that you want to safeguard nourish and grow throughout your life. Losing faith means gradual fall down that leads you to tragic emptiness.

Exactly! At first i was like wow! she really did study the prophet's (pbuh) life! But not 3 mins later in the video, and she's questioning the credibility of the first revelation, and not only that, but she is also saying that he wanted to jump of off a cliff to get rid of these revelation or as she describes them "possession by ginny", when in fact prophet Muhammad after the first revelation he went looking for Gabriel (who came to him in a form of a man the first time), so Muhammad went out seeking after him to know more about what he'd revealed to him, and to be certain if what Nofal had told him is true. That being said, it really makes me wonder that if this woman spent *FIVE YEARS* studying his life, why cant she get the very first part of his life right??! And the thing is, she puts her questioning, doubts, and disbelief in a very twisted way, covered by asking people to not be biased, be open-minded etc. so as the weak and not educated enough about their religion would also start questioning it.
