I hope my comment helps people. I used to train like Jp where it was all top set and back off set. but I was just training to get really strong and it was all about numbers, numbers, numbers. I had no roundness whatsoever to my physique. I’m so glad i went to training like mike and hany rambods teachings. I literally changed more in 3 month’s training like mike than that old way.
@HASANEq4 ай бұрын
Can i just add to it? I was also really following big time JP, and as he recommends, numbers/numbers and numbers, you even need to log your SIDE DELT REPS AND TRY TO GET STRONGER. What that led me to? Nothing, no progress whatsover, he only cares about weight and even in his insta QA says nothing is more important, so guess what? For the last 9 months, yeah i got stronger, did i build muscle while bulking? fuck no. Right now i focus on slowing the negative, pausing in the stretch and really feeling stuff, and guess what? It's fun and i enjoy being here as well as pushing myself. And to just end it, the mental side of that was unbereable, i needed to always be on point because if you are not beating the logbook you are a bitch.

I like Phil Heath’s philosophy of “make the weight your bitch” before obsessing with progressing the number. I agree with the overall spirit of your message but there are logical reasons to use a spot because the “positive” of the exercise isn’t true muscle failure. But I agree with your general message that people equate the weight itself too correlatively with progress when building muscle is based on forcing adaptation, not insisting upon its occurrence based solely on a number or extra ugly rep. Strength, as it pertains to weights, is arguably as much of a skill as it is an actual characteristic.

choosing not to spot someone who's ego lifting with weight that could get you injured is 1000% a perfect reason not to do it. having to deadlift 4 plates with no warmup because some dumbass failed a fucking bench press and you have to deadlift it off of them is what he's talking about. he's not talking about if someone needs assisted reps on a machine or something, he's saying he won't spot someone's ego.
@Alpito123 Жыл бұрын
@@cogginbenton First of all, it's none of your business if someone wants to ego lift or not. I don't care what people do in the gym and I also don't judge them. @cogginbenton Жыл бұрын
@@Alpito123 it is my business if they want me to spot them. and i guess your gym or gyms you’ve been too are filled with the ideal lifters, but what i was talking about and what mike said was about people ego lifting, whether it being the amount of weight OR THE AMOUNT OF REPS (going for an extra rep even though you have no business attempting that) puts pressure and risk on the person YOU asked for a spot from. i don’t necessarily think asking for a spot is bad, and i have never said no when i’ve been asked, but for you to tell someone that you disagree with their decision not to spot people is fucking stupid. simple as that. i doubt mike is being asked by casual lifters/people who are new, he’s most likely being asked by people who have been lifting/trying to lift for years and who can move weight as mike says, and he doesn’t want to put himself at risk because of someone being stupid or unrealistic with themselves, whether it be amount of weight or amount of reps.

I’ve a lot of time for Mike but this is a pretty bad attitude to have with fellow lifters. Yes, you shouldn’t ego lift (risk to injury etc). But using a spotter is common practice when really pushing your training - why ? Because anyone training with real intensity knows that it’s those last one or two reps that are the pure gold, the real improvement if you can keep form. A spotter gives you confidence to go that extra one or two reps (light or heavy), that’s why it’s common practice with even the most seasoned lifters. This just comes across like having a bad attitude, so you can train is isolation and not interrupt your flow, which is what I think is really going on here.
@tofu-warrior7948 Жыл бұрын
Why would you need a spot with a light weight? Isnt that essentially what Mike is saying here? Unless ive misunderstood something. It is quite laughable when people ask for spots on the squats and the person is lifting a massive amount of weight and you can blatantly tell that if the squatter cant get the weight back up, then no one can. Any spotter trying that is risking an injury. I think that's the overall point Mike is making.
@fine163 Жыл бұрын
@@tofu-warrior7948 Yeah I get it, frankly I’d agree that trying to spot someone squatting too heavy is dangerous for everyone and to Mike’s point, almost enabling them to injure themselves. But lifters working on strength are gonna be working outside that 1 RM / 5x5 range and hitting 10-15. For us, those last two-three reps are the key to the whole set. And like I said, a spotter for that set is what ? 30 secs ? Less ? A good spotter will even give you that bit of motivation too. I think this title speaks to his audience more then common practice or even best practice.
@tofu-warrior7948 Жыл бұрын
@@fine163 i get what you're saying there mate completely. And yes, you could/are right about this being aimed at Mikes audience. I think most of that could be some confirmation bias there mixed in with ruffling some feathers. I'll never be the strongest person in my gym & handling any weight i feel uncomfortable with is just a non-starter, even if i did feel i would gain the most from it - always have trained alone anyway (sadly). I just think the point is, if you build too much muscle in your midsection or get too stocky in the stomach area, then maybe crunching too much weight might add to that. I think that's the point. You can make say 20kg harder than 40kg. Does that make sense? Slow it down, do it properly with connection with the mind & muscle, full range of motion etc I basically think that's the main point here. When you've mastered that, then maybe go up in small increments.
