The stresses of racialized economic insecurity can contribute to adverse birth outcomes, with serious implications for the Black and Pacific Islander pregnant communities in San Francisco. The Abundant Birth Project provides mothers a buffer against these stresses. Using a community-driven design approach, Drs. Zea Malawa and Anu Gomez brought this innovative initiative to life. Through an approach that supports the dignity, capability, and autonomy of expectant mothers, the program offers an unconditional income supplement that mothers can use to address their self-identified needs, an effective strategy in promoting healthy births.
