let's build a MALICE pack! part 2: Modernizing ALICE pack hardware
taking an off-the-shelf ALICE pack and frame and making the tweaks to turn it into a high-speed-low-drag lean, mean, loadout machine!

I realize you purchased some hardware, but I like the idea of salvaging older stuff and useful bits and parts off of old, no longer functional things. I did buy some buckles and such from Walmart and I recently found a package of cord keepers for 94 cents at Goodwill. But I also have coffee cans filled with buckles, keepers, loops, rings, sections of canvas webbing and straps. It's those little trinkets that can be just the thing you need to improve, fix or modify something. The older military gear may not have certain features, but it was good quality.

Outstanding!. I've added fastex buckles to my ChiCom chest rigs, but never thought of using them on my ALICE pack. Semper Fi.

I know this a 3 year old video but if you take a can of the spray adhesive flex seal on the bottom of the map pocket it will make it water proof again

On the outside straps that cinch down the top get the nylon straps with the plastic female buckle attached and thread them through the original metal buckles and take all the slack out of them. On the original straps only cut off the doubled over ends that keeps the strap in the original buckle and thread it through the male side of the buckle. Tuck all the excess original strap back up through the loops around the top of the pack. If the plastic buckle breaks you can always thread the strap back through the original metal buckle till you can replace the plastic one.

To fix the top flap I was told to use " Flexall" on the underside & linseed oil on the top. I haven't done it myself but have seen it done & it seemed to work so I'm going to try it myself. I'll let you know how it turns out.

FYI... the shelf is for supporting a radio in an alice.
@renaissancemarinetv3536
@renaissancemarinetv3536 7 жыл бұрын
yes, that is one of its uses. but not WITH the alice pack. i remember one of our radiomen would carry his prick strapped on the frame/shelf and attach deuce gear and buttpack onto the straps. early molle! but it was also designed with carry five gallon gas and water cans. i can attest to it. i carried many of the plastic five gallon water jerrys. but if your saying shelf AND alice with prick 77 inside the alice, no, never saw that. how would you get to the controls? what would secure the radio from bouncing around inside the pack and sliding off the shelf?
@loosecannon7787
@loosecannon7787 7 жыл бұрын
The radio controls on the unit I used was at the top of the radio. The radio went inside the radio pocket inside the alice and the shelf on the outside simply supported it. Yes, the shelf has several other uses. I just thought it may help to locate them.

I personally wouldn’t add plastic Chinese buckles to my pack. My pack is American made and has lasted me my entire 20 years plus in the Corps. There is a reason you needed a heavy duty wire cutter to cut off the old Alice clips. Just go by a hiking pack from Walmart, and leave Alice alone. Semper Fidelis

It's your pack but in an old mans opinion any one changing out steel for plastic is looking more at making it his rather than making basic improvements . It just does not make since to an old fart like me but like I said it's yours so make your self happy I guess .
@renaissancemarinetv3536
@renaissancemarinetv3536 6 жыл бұрын
in general i would agree. metal trumps plastic. but having carried that pack from 1982 onward, i can tell you that the fastex buckles are a huge inprovement on the metal ones, in every way. fastex buckles have been the industry standard for several decades. you wont find metal rings or buckles on any serious military packs anymore. snaps yes, metal snaps are still better than plastic.

Not a problem here, I understand and give your self more credit new idea's are great change for the better is great but at 74 man I'm pretty much lock in . there is one thing I was tool and die maker for to many years made a lot of plastic injections molds that is where I get my distrust for molded parts . So many things can go wrong and you just never know with plastic where the failure is or when it will happened so many things there are flow lines gas problems when things are injected at such high temperatures there's a tremendous amount of gas which needs venting from the mold cavitiy and some times it just doesn't happen then you get fine flow lines which leads in some cases to failure. It happens with any plastic I'm sure improvements have been made but the basic problem gas with always be there when injecting anything . It's been fun Happy trails
