When I first watched this scene, it was nothing but a huge headscratcher. Upon first glance: he shouldn't have the Golden Fleece, it was destroyed by Zeus alongside the rest of Kratos' weapons. And second of all: they should've depicted the Blades Of Exile, as those were Kratos' main weapons in God Of War 3, and the ones he uses before tossing them to the side to beat Zeus by hand. Even the vase in Tyr's temple depicts the Blades Of Exile

I understand why they went with Kratos killing Zeus, because that tied into the story of Baldur and Freya as well as the Atreus and Kratos relationship. The "is that what being a God is? Sons killing their fathers? Their mothers?" And the want for his son to be better than him, but of all the murders that he committed that would haunt Kratos I would have thought his killing his first wife and daughter would be the ones that haunts him in Hel. I know in GOW III a big moment in that game was Kratos forgiving himself for that and that allowed him to unlock "hope" which gave him the power to kill Zeus. But having his new wife die, being cremated (turned to ash like the ashes of his wife and daughter which still are on his skin) and now having to take care of his son on his own, I thought would stir up the loss of his first family again.

Maybe it's because he's focusing on Atreus not going down the path that he is and keeping everything from him? He's been focusing more on preventing Atreus from learning about what he did to HIS Father than his past familial life. Atreus is his world now, and he probably wants to prevent anything that can come back to harm his son to be locked away. So, since he's been thinking about it so much, maybe that's why Hel manifested it? Sort of to torture him more? Kratos moved on from the death of his old family when he made a new one with Faye. But he hasn't moved on from what he did to his Father because of what Atreus is on the path to becoming. That's my two cents anyway.

Kratos feels a lot of guilt and shame about all he did in his past, but his brutal murder of Zeus strikes at the heart of what's become most important to him now -- the father/son relationship. This reveals to Atreus the kind of man his father was, in a way that hurts Kratos the most.

They are cursed to always find Kratos, whether he throws them off a mountain or into the sea, they will find him. He leaves behind the Blades of Exile as he beats Zeus, although the model in this game is Chaos.

Playing in Kratos's Perspective in God Of War 3, it feels bloody good, literally, just brutally beating up Zeus.
