The 185 Saber has long been known to be a heckuva round in the +P from a 5 inch. The standard pressure ain't half bad. I carry the +P in my Shield .45. Good stuff. Side note: The Arkansas State Police used the 230 Saber .45 for years & won MANY gunfights with that round. Seems to work better in felons than in gel. 😁

The bonded bullets are new production. The older bullets in golden saber were proven performers but had a chance of core jacket separation and so they went bonded. They will have to tweak the 230 grain bullets so they open properly.

The 185’s are definitely the way to go. I remember some time back reading an article by Massad Ayoob where he recommended the Golden Saber +P 185 gr. The bonded version did not yet exist. This was after he had tested them in a slaughter house. The difference in the animal’s reaction and the amount of tissue destruction by these and other rounds tested was like night and day. Something to consider.

Another advantage of using the 185-grain bullet is there is considerably less recoil. In a full-size pistol, recoil isn't as much of an issue. However, if you're shooting a Kahr CW45 that weighs 19.7 ounces, shooting the lighter bullet makes the gun much more enjoyable to shoot. Since expanding hollow points are velocity based, you're much more likely to reach the expansion threshold when shooting a lighter bullet out of a shorter barrel gun. A 185-grain bullet traveling 950-1000 fps will give the desired result in most cases. A 9mm 147 grain bullet will provide similar velocities as the 45 caliber 185 grain bullet. However, the 45 caliber bullet will provide about 20% more muzzle energy and make a larger wound channel.

Interesting results Tools. After the disaster of those 230's I didn't expect much out of these 185's. So I was a bit surprised they did as good as they did. The 5" barrel seems to be the sweet spot for the 185's with perfect performance. Just goes to show that ammo can fluctuate widely from weight and barrel length. Have a great weekend Tools. 185 bonded rounds in some cases but the non bonded version of this in standard pressure usually comes up shallow in penetration from 5" barrels, as do other brands of non bonded 185's out of 5" barrels.

The Speer Gold Dot 200 grain +P is supposed to be the top dog when it comes to 45 ACP expansion and penetration. Widely used in law enforcement agencies. But as your test showed, the Remington Golden Saber 185 grain JHP is a perfectly fine non +P option. Would be interesting to test the Winchester 185 grain Silvertip as well.

Another good vid. I've been handloading the GS non-bonded in 185 and 230gr since the early 90's, and for personal defense, I have a preference for the 185gr in a +P load at 1,100fps in my 5" pistols and nearly 1,050fps in my 4" XD's. I get penetration in the 14-16 inch range with excellent expansion.

Great test, Brian! This shows why I always choose a lighter for caliber bullet in all of my hand guns! It also shows why I much prefer the bonded bullets and +P ammo for back up to my normal Lehigh bullets! The extra velocity gives the bullets just a tiny bit better chance of working over the usual watered down factory ammo that everyone seems to be putting out these days. A 185 gr bullet from a 45 ACP should be in the neighbourhood of 1100 fps, not 1000 or under! The bonded bullets should be tough enough to handle that velocity as well. The Golden Sabers did ok in your tests but I think these might be a little lite in the construction department, as well as going too slow. Now if Remington will sell the bullets as components....(you won't see me holding my breath for that!). Your new set up is great! The lab radar is great and I like that you have your old chrony set up for the gel shots. Not knowing if you get one of the lower velocity rounds can really screw over the test results! Not that there's anything to be done about it in a gunfight! Another reason I prefer my hand loads in most cases. I also think you should stay with the heavy clothing, since if the bullet works with the barrier, it will certainly work without it! Keep up the great work, I recommend your channel to everyone that will listen! Cheers, jc

That's because most people become emotionally vested in their caliber and carry load wives tales and so they lose the ability to remain objective on the matter, in so far as they ever really were. If I've been using Allstate to insure my car for the last 30 years while paying my bill robotically every month for those 30 years like a horse with blinders on and have never had cause to make a claim and have never shopped for any other coverage in all that time, I might be prone to tell you that my insurance coverage is the best and that anything else anyone else is selling is substandard. Why? It's what I know. It's all I know, but it's "what I know." I think that's where a lot of this sacrilegious and self righteous indignation business comes from in guns and ammo. I should know after all; I used to be one of those guys.

Some bullets don't do gel tests. These things are great on deer. Especially the +p 185gr loading. The jacket reliably comes off and makes a huge independent wound channel and the core almost always exits the animal or catches under the far side skin.

Those short 3.3 inch barrels can be a challenge in regards to finding adequate performing 45 defensive ammo. It was interesting catching the unexpected high velocity from the shorter barrel and the lower velocity from the longer barrel during the gel test. These performed better than the heavier bonded Golden Sabers for sure. IMHO they should have stayed with the original(non-bonded) design. Those 230gr bullets would reliably expand to a diameter greater than 0.7 and reach an ideal depth. The slight jacket separation was a minor issue compared to now having bullets that fail to expand.

I know it's not a 10mm video, but it's fun to do comparisons, so: Out of the 4", V50 averaged 900 FPS, and Ke50 averaged 323 energy foot pounds. Out of the 5", V50 averaged 965 FPS, and Ke50 averaged 413 energy foot pounds. For 10mm to meet design specs, a 200-grain bullet would have to have a V50 of at least 1,000 fps and a Ke50 of at least 444 energy foot pounds when fired from a 5" gun. Keep in mind, that's "at least," not "on average." For a 185 grain .45 ACP to make that same Ke50 of 444 energy foot pounds, it would have to have a V50 of 1040 feet per second.

Alas , not long afterwards, the also good bang for buck Turkish mfg 1911 began being imported in quality, and took a big chunk of the market niche ( cheap 1911 that don't suck ) , that Rock Island had hoped to take over .

I have yet to see the GS Bonded bullets perform consistently in a demin/gel test. If anything, the original non-bonded Golden Sabers perform better in every test, jacket separation notwithstanding. I'm hoping the new-gen Golden Saber Defense rounds are the original non-bonded bullets.

The standard deviation in that shorter barrel isn’t acceptable in my book. Longer barrel helped with SD considerably. Your dads officer model Colt, does it run well? I’ve never had good results with 3.5” barrel, my Sig C3 (4.20” barrel) is shortest 1911 I can get to run 100% reliably. Another informative test, THANKS! BTW the older non bonded golden saber are better in my experience.

I sure hope the one's you used at the range were the BONDED type tested here that performed like sheet and not the standard brass jacketed non-bonded because the non-bonded type .230's in GS are excellent. Great. Fabulous. Home runs. Sensational. Outstanding. Highly effective. Well proven. Thoroughly tested. I'm putting this out there like this so people, many people being who and what they are most times, sheeple, don't toss the baby out with the bath water because they think they're the same thing when they absolutely are not.

Stick with 230 grain, just not GS Bonded 230 grain. Once in a blue moon you can still find some 230 grain "non bonded" GS from a Remington run of them. When you do, I suggest you snap them up. The king? King of the 230 grain 45 acp. loadings IMHO now and still after all these years that's actually available largely? Federal Hooligan Shredding Terminators in 230 grain. Denim, shmenim. It expands and penetrates. The other would be the Winchester Ranger NON BONDED either regular octane or +P but finding them for sale without having to sell your mother into endentured servitude to afford them if you can find them at all? Tough going. If you haven't already tried them, give the Federal Punch in 230 a whirl. They're delivering between .65 and .75 of expansion with 16" to 18" penetration and they're "reasonably" priced (in the post apocalyptic insanity of the scamdemic at least...) and widely available.

Does that Taurus “commander” generally show that much SD and ES? Seems odd one (gun 5”) would have so much better Sd/ES with same Ammo. Just wondering if that pistol has history of large SD/ES? I will need to run some of these through my Sig C3 with its 4.2” barrel. Just to see if velocities settle down. Even for a handgun those deviation numbers aren’t good!
