Lets touch on the Great Disaster. It's a massive issue for me because it further weaponises Hyperspace from the Holdo manoeuvre plus it shouldn't work with the existing hyperdrive lore - once a object becomes detached from a hyperdrive it immediately drops out of hyperspace. Objects dropping out of hyperspace aren't travelling at near light speed either. In 2011 Timothy Zahn while speaking on a panel at Fan Days IV in Irving, TX, spoke about the importance of getting the physics of hyperspace right and his responsibility as a writer to not "throw a monkey wrench" in to the existing universe. While he was writing the original Thrawn trilogy he heavily drew from the West End Games material and spoke to them at length about how a hyper drive works. Way back then they realised that "if you have to slow down while exiting hyperspace you've created a rail gun / mass driver, you don't need a Death Star you can just send a asteroid into hyperspace, not decelerate it and have it run into Alderaan, plus it's free" and "the fact that it never happened in the movies means that it can't happen therefore that's not how hyperdrives work". All the while he's making these comments Aaron Allston (RIP) is sitting beside him nodding his head. Source of those comments: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6LFpGR3bLyXZsk starts at the 6:04 timestamp.

For me I don’t have a problem with it it’s really cool also for me hyperspace is like time travel when you get into you can plunge into a deep uncertainty. I think from what thor has said before it’s best with hyperspace not to try explain it like the original trilogies didnt it’s just to complex it’s better to think we just don’t understand it and that it works in a complicated way but it works I mean clearly they can’t send asteroids through it like that or they would that was a very specific scenario they could do that is to there routes so for me it’s better to think like time travel it’s better to think it’s complicated we won’t understand it but it works and it’s there

I think it's fine bc at the end of the day it's a made-up sci-fi world with space Sasquatches and warrior monk wizards with laser swords and everything from the Force to Hyperspace are backdrops to tell a larger story. Focusing so much on the details and what "should" and "shouldn't" be possible based on the movies has led to more grief in the Star Wars fandom than I care to go into, and franchises like this need to revisit rules and certain mechanics in order to stay fresh. Imagine if George Lucas never retconned the Clone Wars era from what was described in Legends novels and other media, or if no other Force powers were added after ANH bc it "wasn't in the movie." We would have had a much different franchise for better or worse. Besides a piece of metal being torn apart and forcibly thrown out of a hyperplane probably acts different from a ship designed to travel such an environment so I'm okay with giving this some wiggle room. Also it's cool and a great start to the HR in general (and no I don't like the sequels just bc they're "cool").

@@Sparkypaws1 If the world you build doesn't stay internally consistent then everything falls apart & immersion breaks. Did you watch the Zahn video? He explains it really well. Hyperspace is this great way to enable easy travel and the technology to access hyperspace is freely available in the Star Wars galaxy. It's relatively accessible commodity which is why the authors have to take great care to not weaponise it because then you render space battles with space ships mute. Also for The Republic to exist they've had to have access to hyperspace travel for at least 25,000 years. That's a very long time, nothing like what triggered The Great Disaster didn't happen in all that time? The Disney era writers aren't like Zahn in that they don't think about the wider impacts of a story element, it;'s why alot of the Disney era stories suck.
@lordcarnorjax8599
@lordcarnorjax8599 Жыл бұрын
@@darnis6497 That's literally the reason why the Holdo manoeuvre got sign off at the Storygroup because "it looked cool". But the dumb asses didn't think about the wider implications of breaking all space battles which is why they had to retcon it as "one in a million" in TROS. They realised they f"ked up and had to fix it. Then the same Story group dumb asses signed off on the Great Disaster which basically accident version of Holdo but with worse complications. If you apply the logic of the Great Disaster to The Last Jedi, various pieces of Home One should have appeared out of hyperspace at random points along it's trajectory, travelling at near light speed and destroy things in their path.

Interesting. I've read most of the Clone War era Legends novels and I don't remember any such event. @@OtherDAS depends if it can be weaponized. The hyperdrive in Legends was something no-one truly understood everything about. They could make them and understood the basic principles of the tech, but not all the potential phenomenon that could be caused by the tech. After all, it's reverse-engineered tech from the Rakata who fused their tech with the Force. And they got their tech from a race that could create gates that allowed for teleportation between planets and entire systems. The Infinity Gates. Pretty much Stargates. A "1 in a million" chance like used to defend the maneuver in TROS can be replicated. As shown when it happens again in TROS. Hurl enough asteroids and one is bound to work. But something like a one in a trillion chance freak accident is more acceptable. Something that has even the people in-universe going "what the fuck just happened?"

Honestly the High Republic era has become one of my favorite eras in Star Wars Legends or Canon. The story has been mapped out and planned from the very beginning by the luminous authors working on the novels. To me that is already a great start. The characters all feel like main characters as well. I thought Avar would be the main character at first given how strong she is, but the character development for all the other characters make it seem like they are as well. Elzar Mann's struggle with his emotions and his attachment to Avar is very similar to Anakin's in a lot of ways. He's also very different. He's very independent and at times maybe a bit too much. Stellan Gios although clearly not the protagonist due to his fate in Fallen Star also felt very important. He's almost the complete opposite of Elzar. He goes by the rules to an extreme and basically didn't do the things his way, instead he became what other in the council wanted him to be. That is why I love Stellan and Elzar's last interaction. Bell Zettifar's struggle with losing his master and his lack of confidence not having him there is also very interesting. I hope he becomes one of the main characters moving forward. Same with Vernestra Rwoh. She's extremely gifted and seems like the most talented out of all the Padawans/Knights in the era so far. Her gift being so similar to Mari San Tekka makes me believe she will be at the center of Phase 3 when we possibly go back to this time period. I can go on and on even with Lula and Zeen or Qort's character. They are all very well developed through different stories. The thing I love the most though is how everything is coming together. When you recorded this Phase 1 was not done yet. The last 3 issues released and Trail of Shadows #5 revealed a lot about the Leveler/Nameless. A very Lovecraftian creature and was handled that way very well, completely mysterious. Eye of the Storm #2 reveals where the creature was captured by Marchion and how it is connected to his family history. That is why I love that we are going even farther into the past to possibly find that out. The story completely made sense and Marchion's motivation to opposing the Republic is clear. I think this is one of the best eras made. Well planned in advance, different characters for people to follow and told through different formats. And yeah I think the diversity is a strength in the era. The characters are well developed and why would anyone not want diversity with well developed characters. There is nothing wrong with having someone who looks like you be in a story and be a great character. I can go on and on but the post would be way longer. lol I appreciate you not bashing this with nonsense arguments like a lot of people online who are doing it for clicks. Being negative about Star Wars or any big IP by faking outrage is very popular with content creators nowadays. Sadly a lot of people eat that crap up without questioning anything. So I appreciate your honesty.

With the High Republic stories is the time period and how the Jedi operate. For the time period the high Republic is set 200 years before episode 1 which is in the 1000 years of relative peace called the Russan Reformation era. In this era the Jedi were legally forbade the command of armies and the use of heavy military vehicles. The Republic also shifted its military from a central army to planetary sector defenses. To make my point the jedi in the high Republic are not only well armed with several cruiser class vessels but also a fleet of ( albeit poorly designed) extremely versatile and well armed craft. The Nihil seem tacked on to try and make conflict but fail as they are bland and forgettable. One thing that does bother me is why is the Republic taking over hutt space? Also overall this feels like a half-assed attempt by the Star Wars Story committee to replace the Old Republic era that Kennedy decanonized after the Disney buyout of Lucasfilm.

I did not read the books but from close friends who have, this seems to be an accurate summarization. KK has already proven herself to be more than capable of sabotaging the classic story and universe of Star Wars. Her story group is nothing more than an activist committee trying to change the lore to fit real world modern social constructs. I refuse to spend time/money on anything she is directly influencing.

I would disagree that the High Republic sets up the downfall of the Jedi Order in the Prequel trilogy. If anything, it logically doesn't make sense to be a build up to that. If the Jedi were constantly getting punked left and right by their adversaries, public faith in the Order would've waned long before the Clone Wars era and never attained the prestige they held within the Republic. Also, the Jedi would be changing their ways much earlier into something else that would serve to grant them more power. If anything, these are more plot points that would've worked to justify anti-Jedi opinions during the Clone Wars era and make Order 66 more digestible for the common citizens of the newly declared Empire. If anything, the High Republic should be a time period where the Jedi were schooling everything left and right with the teachings they hold in order to fall into the arrogant complacency that they succumb to in the PT. I.E. we found that our way works, why bother changing? Unfortunately, that would be boring to read in a Jedi centric narrative. That would be much better suited as background world building through the eyes on non-Jedi. Granted, this can always change and the Jedi get a rather glorious victory that starts to lead them down the path of arrogant complacency. Just, atm, I'm not seeing it.

But in the end the Jedi will crush the Nihil and the galaxy will have their faith in them restored. And, to prevent further incidents like the Nihil, they will begin to work closer than ever with the Republic setting up what we see in the Prequels.
@ZeroHakaru
@ZeroHakaru 3 жыл бұрын
@@thorskywalker That's always a possibility. I'm just not really seeing the warning signs of a "we won, but at what cost" setup that would mesh with the situation that is the Prequel trilogy. If anything, I'm seeing setups for a more flexible and fluid Jedi order that has the faith of the Republic backing it. I could be wrong and jumping the gun on my interpretation of events. It just feels like any semblance of the unhealthy stagnation of the Jedi Order is missing, imo.

I think a large issue, as some in the comments have also concluded it seems: this period, if written as a way for the prequel set up, SHOULD be bland. Very little should happen. All should be content. You’d maybe have stories of Jedi and padwans making discoveries. You could have intrigue stories about The Sith setting up in the background and nearly being discovered. But nothing of catastrophe should happen that isn’t immediately fixed by Jedi. It’s an era, that frankly shouldn’t have wild stories. It’s a prosperous time. With maybe a few small disasters that are fast fixed. Personally, it feels very much like “shit, we decanonised, Old Republic and KOTOR….let’s do something else but at a different time”

I imagine that it takes energy to jump into, and maintain a ship within, hyperspace with a functional hyperdrive. These books make the Jedi look like power by inept characters. None seem to try to strategize and go after the Nihil. They seem dumb to trying to track down and find The Gaze Electric. In the trilogy the Jedi seem to always be on the back foot or unable to take the initiative. Now the bad guys have a “being” or beings that can literally sever the connection to the force. That’s literally an OP enemy when none of these Jedi seem capable of creating a strategy or even make a connection of their severed connection to the beings. Like, go after the Nihil and actually fight back. Why couldn’t they make counter offensive. In Fallen Star NONE of the Jedi connect the dots that 3 planets are attacked AT THE SAME TIME make the connection that it was deliberate until too far into the book.

The high republic should be maxed out republic with no loss and little gain. And I agree, they shouldn’t be losing really, they should feel vain and successful, personally. Overcoming most, if not all challenges, leading to their hubris. What is with Disney writer obsession it’s hyperspace? The Jedi at least seem somewhat interesting. @@goodmind4940 It's repeating a story that's already been told and, imo it will not have the Legends banner on it (they truly don't want to confuse the poor "babes" in the casual-fandom audience that make up their mainstream sales numbers as to its "canon" status) despite being FIRMLY Legends, so no, it's not Legends. That it is a remake from the ground up shows this. Even aping the original story as closely as possible, which is what they will do, makes it what it has been all along - EU in a Disney-canon context, and thus I'll avoid it. I'd rather play the original. I love quirky, weird graphics. I'm not a snob who needs a fix of mind-blowing FX. And yes, I'd prefer something MORE like 108 over the KOTOR remake. Even a new novel exploring Waru or Ken Palpatine. But they don't give me that, so my wallet has been closed for years now.

Just like that, it pulled me in. Now on to book two. It had so many characters and very slow pace. Around chapter 25, BAM! "Just when I thought I was out, they bring me back in." These Jedi in this Era are absolutely far more superior to the Jedi of the Clone Wars. they are masters of the four and utilize it responsibly. They love, they feel anger, and they do not create zombies with no emotion. I love these Jedis my friends give the book a try and keep mushing through you will not be disappointed.

But, unfortunately, it does not fit together with the characterisation of Obiwan, or Yoda in the OT in the slightest. The< are clearly portrayed as the real thing, through and through. However, the overall Project Luminous Initiative wasn't executed very well: It wasn't promoted in an optimum way (that trailer, in early Winter 2020? If they had prepared a trailer like the one for STAR WARS: Eclipse by Quantic Dream, which takes place during THR epoch, THAT would have been effective, and We'd be in a very different place)...It suffered from being partly greenlit by Kennedy and Hidalgo (the entire project became suspect, upon that realization...they are the 2 most responsible for relegating The EU to Legends, so the project already had strikes going against it), resulting in some of the writers being chosen for the project inserting some of the "Identity Politics" ("Diversity" and "Diversity And Representation" on the idea board!) that affected some of the storytelling, a few characters (esp. those supposed, "Non-binary" male Jedi Twins), and its potential to reach long-standing SW Fans...Also, some of the comics and storytelling came across as too goofy or just plain oversimplified ("Buckets Of Blood", as the name of a Jedi Master?! Seriously?)...perhaps its biggest mistake was it trying to be all things to all SW Readers/Fans. Perhaps, its biggest obstacle was it was promoted and released right after the abysmal execution of The ST (Kennedy and Hidalgo's worst moment as creative heads; 2nd is their attack on Gina Carano), and during the SW renaissance of The Mandalorian Saga. Post-TLJ, a clear line had been drawn (leading to Solo's failure) in the sand, and having the top brass at Lucasfilm Ltd. promoting a new project that defined itself as, "Before The Skywalker Saga", brought even more negative feelings towards its existence. Which is unfortunate, because, overall, it was/is a quality block of storytelling, and its new lore and world building are very unique and special; and it makes me hope to see some of these truly exotic places depicted in Live Action and Animated forms (esp. in The Mandalorian Saga and The Bad Batch). I very much enjoyed the REAL VILLAINS of The High Republic, the Evereni survivor, Marchion Ro and The (Great) Leveler, which I'm still not finished seeing do its worst to The Jedi. I am still looking forward to witnessing this epic storytelling continue, in Phase Two (esp. to witness a much younger Porter Engle, and his galaxy-wide known exploits). Though, I'm curious where this new story is going, considering that it has been established that The High Republic existed only 250 years, during the 1000-years existence of The Republic...yet, this next batch of stories will take place 150 years before The Great Hyperspace Disaster. So, these stories can't be a part of The High Republic, right? They have to be a new period in the galaxy's history. Unless, Project Luminous intends to retcon their own timeline. It's been fun, for the most part, to be part of the SW Fans who made this experiment a "cult hit'. Though, I'm pretty certain that Disney/Lucasfilm Ltd. would've preferred this to have been a bona fide hit, like The Mandalorian Saga has...

Should I recommend my kid for this?

@@liamphibia There are 4 children's books (7 to 12?), and 3 Young Adult books (14 to 18, I guess?). If your kid likes SW, and they're under 13, I guess the kids books would work...their cute-looking books, smaller in size than the adult books, perfect for a young person's library. There is also a small number of comics that seem specifically-oriented towards preteens (there's a Jedi Bake-off in one, so, it ain't for adults), so they might be good for your kid, too. The adult novels are very good, esp. The Rising Storm, the second novel in the series...it gets very dark, from minute one, and I loved it.

Do I recommend it well if disney canon dose have much content and you've already check out so much of old eu stuff and want little more SW content I would recommend if you are angry that took away O.R. from canon and your fear it's a replacement for it give it little because folks at lucusfilm are aware of that so don't worry about that if you are legends fan like I am especially O.R. era you don't like disney canon only some like but if done with disney SW and rather stick to old eu I wouldn't recommend here's an important note for normy fans I require you to mite check out Old Republic after high pub(or before it if you want to)because who knows what phase 2 even is so I need you to know old eu first that you met mega fans very pissed so try to understand why in reality high pub is just shitty poor man's prequel era

I think there's a chance, especially considering (as pointed out) the upcoming "The Acolyte" series will be set in The High Republic. Plus the game "Star Wars: Eclipse" is going to be set in the High Republic. If both those do well it wouldn't surprise me if it moved into films.

@@thorskywalker The vast majority of those announced streaming shows were never going to make it to production, bro. That was just sleazy corporate marketing, and even Stargate and Star Trek _at their prime_ couldn't juggle more than two shows. I suspect Acolyte won't make it to the silver screen, but who knows.
