Of all the movements that's the beheading and r--ping people to make a point group and they're a terror to the region, especially to Muslims who aren't extreme enough for them. I think of them a bit like if the KKK went to war, but I'm not a specialist in the region's dynamics so don't rely too heavily on that metaphor.

Well, HTS did start out as a branch of Al-Qaeda -- but around...I think it was 2016 (I work for a think tank that specializes in Syria, but I'd have to go look up past reports for an exact date. I do know it was at latest 2019 but may have been earlier), when they had secured the northwest-ish part of Syria, basically Idlib province, that they publicly distanced themselves from AQ and IS, saying that they would be supporting the Syrian Salvation Government (SSG) in that area, and basically turned to actually governing. They've been doing that for at least five years, possibly as many as eight, and Idlib has been as stable as any area in the conflict could be. Biden took a good stance with them, especially since their leader has a US bounty on his head--time for them to prove they mean what they've been saying. And making sure IS doesn't interfere in that chance HTS has been given is a good thing as well. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
@CricketsBay9 күн бұрын
HTC is not ISIS, but they are kind of like Al Quaeda, from reports. There interviews with their leader online. I think his name is Al-Golani. At least it looks like HTS has only marginalized the Kurdish fighters, not handed them over to Türkiye to be murdered like the U.S. did under Trump.

Syria is predominately Sunni Muslim, but Assad's family is Alawite (an offshoot of Shia). Now that he's gone, maybe Syria will abandon the Iranians (who are predominantly Shia). Since Iran, Iraq and Lebanon are predominantly Shia (or are controlled by Shia) the Sunni nations would happy to have Syria back into the fold.
