On the skirt, just bind before adding the leaves, which would be closed-stitches around the edges. :) Gives dimension.

For the variegated threads, do you use the same variegated thread in the bobbin as well?

Yes you can, or you can use one of the colors from the variegated thread that matches the back.

A couple of questions. I have been domestic machine quilting free motion or just lines and have only used cotton thread. Can I use polyester? I have some Gutermann serging thread, can that be used for machine quilting?

We always recommend you use what your brand tells you to. However, we use OMNI which is a 30tex polyester all the time on ours. You could try your serger thread, the only issue you might have with different threads is tension, so we always recommend a tester piece before you start sewing or quilting.
