Love the videos, so inspiring. The plant is sour fig. We have loads here in Portugal but it actually holds soft soil together really well. Found in the clifftops here.

It's called sour fig mate it's actually edible. I used to removevitvwith the gsy conservation crowd but gave up as it really is needed to protect from erosion. Look where its been removed from and the land is actually missing from errosion

Ah that’s interesting. I didn’t realise that was sour fig. I might have to try some sometime. Yeah they were removing it from near the car park next to beaucette restaurant I think. I’ll have a look next time I’m down there.

I won’t be naming anyone mate. I’m not here to cause drama, it’s just frustrating that’s all. Dorset was good fun but the fishing was very tough. Caught a couple of small bass but that was it. A good experience and plenty learnt for next time.

I use the TwinPower 4000, loaded to the absolute max with Suffix 131 and I honestly haven't had a wind knot in nearly two seasons. And I mainly fish at night, when line management is harder. Change to Suffix 131, it doesn't fray and balloon like cheaper stuff either, so is better in a cross wind. @@FISHINGWITHCAL

We were staying in weymouth mate. We fished the side of chesil towards portland. Also did a few marks on portland too, we went as far as swanage and also fished the fleet too.

hi cal,i resently subed your chanel to see how you catch bass .i live up noerth yorkshire and was wondering what baits you use when not using lures?as where we fish the sea is rough and night fishing baits helps aviod all the other anglers.any advice would be great

Hi mate. To be honest, bass will eat pretty much any bait! In the Uk I know a lot of guys that use squid baits for bass when the water is murky during the winter. Mackerel is a good bait too. I tend to use baits like fresh lugworm, razor clams, gaper clams, peeler crab etc. You can catch bass on any bait though, try matching the baits to things you know are naturally around that area where you’re fishing. If the water is dirty then go for a bait with a lot of scent. The fish will always find it.

The Algarve.. Nice! It's hard to recommend a specific reel for you. It will depend on your budget. Anything from a size 2000 to 4000 will be ideal for a rod like that. Penn reels are very strong and can handle a lot. Daiwa also make some very nice lure fishing reels and Shimano reels are excellent too. Maybe have a look online and see what you think. Cheers.

Thanks! I have one of the Espetit surface lures. To be honest, I've only used it a few times but I was pretty impressed with it. It casts very well and I like the way it sits in the water. I'll have to dig it out and give it some more water time. The shallow diver they’ve made looks really good too although I haven’t used that yet.

Any tips for my lure fishing? I'm from Kent, UK. I've lured my local beach which is Folkestone, I've lured from stone beaches to a sharp drop. I've lured from concrete apron onto immediate deep water, over small rocks etc, I've used a mixture of hard metal, hard plastic, soft plastic. I've been to Isle of wight, and lured over rocky coves from a concrete wall, where I was recommended by locals to use top water lures. I've just come back from Cornwall where I fished the river Camel near Padstow and used Savage Sand eel, and a weedless sand eel, and hard metal (people were catching bass / pollock with bait) . We then fished Sennen Cove harbour wall, over sand / rocks with soft plastic and hard metal. ( I know there were Bass nearby because a guy snorkelling come out with two giant bass he harpooned, which put me to shame). We then moved to Mevagissey harbour wall, a popular bass / mackerel hot spot and we caught nothing again ( A guy caught a 6lb bass the day before). I got new Savage hard plastic minnow that I lost, So I tried soft plastic sand eels as there were plenty in sight. Again no luck, then a Seal turned up so was pretty much done for the day by that point. Others were pulling out very small Wrasse on bait however I could see them approaching my lure and turning away. I'm more of a catch & cook person, but we haven't come up trumps with mackerel this year, I've only had 1 locally and none on my trips. So would love to catch at least 1 sizeable bass before the winter sets in. I'm using a Penn Lure rod, 20-100g compact 4 piece travel. Currently on a 18lb mono line (too much?) . I've fished mostly calmer waters, a few rougher days, I fish mostly after work or evenings so it's around sunset, although a few daylight sessions, mixture of cloud to clear skies. I've tried a mixture of techniques with reeling in and just can't fathom why it's just this bad. I'm at a point where it's either location or technique holding me back. All locations are usually fishable at high tide, so we're fishing a few hours before and after. Any tips from Cal & Viewers appreciated. Not ready to give up yet haha! BTW, the plant is called Sally-my-handsome. I love it! We see it all over the cornish cliff edges and tin mines.

It sounds like you’ve definitely put the hours in mate! As far as the bass go, it sounds like you’re doing all the right things, changing lures and locations etc. All I could put it down to is that there are no bass there when you’re fishing these places? You should be getting mackerel off most piers and harbour walls, I would fish metals mostly for the mackerel. Sometimes they can be quite far out so a heavier lure, like a 40g jig will get you into the hotspots. The rod you’re using will cast a lure like that no problem. All I could say is to keep trying mate. Stick to the shallower, rougher ground for bass rather than deep water marks. If you’re worried about losing lures on ground like that, then you could use a very shallow diving lure, a surface lure or something like a savage gear gravity stick. If there are fish there, you should hook into something.

All you can do is fish a weedless lure through it really. You'll still pick up the odd bit of weed though. The other option is to fish a surface lure over the weed beds, that can be very productive.
