@@khulaniafrost8359 having heat damage does not mean they are not natural. You don't get gold star for maintaining a specific curl pattern and calling yourself natural. There are TONS of "naturals" with mechanical damage from over manipulation, combs, brushed, incorrect protective styling, etc. the damage is just masked by the curls or the protective style they put it in. You wouldn't call them not natural because they have mechanical damage would you?? Like I said a curl pattern is by far less important than actual key indicators of damage which is breakage, split ends, fairy knots, loss of elasticity, inability to retain moisture, etc. Talk to any PROFESSIONAL hairstylist. They could give a F about that curl pattern chart. It doesn't determine health of the hair shaft at all.

I also think it's a preference of words. It can have a negative or positive connotation. Heat trained is just heat damaged package in a cute bow. I would equate heat trained to someone who is naturally 4c, but has become 4b after several silk presses. They are ok with it because it still looks natural and the curls are mostly uniformed to the point where you think it was their natural pattern. Heat damage has become the phrase to use when the new curl after heat is so drastically different from your natural curl, or concentrated in certain parts where you have 4c hair but 4a strands throughout

Likening recovery from extreme heat damage to growing out a relaxer is spot on, and also disheartening. And proof you really really really know your stuff as a professional conveying to the masses via KZbin. I did so much heat styling last fall (Dominican roller sets + blow dry and a bit of flat iron) - curls are still there, but my ends are splitsville.

Slow low damage more like. I use blowouts once a week to relax my natural texture, and all week do no heat styling. The longer my hair gets the easoer it is to style, and I trim regularly, and never use high setting for blowout or touching up with flat iron. I have 4a type hair, and only use natural organic hair products. So far so good. It gets me to a a looser 4a-3c texture, which isn't much of a change, but it helps immensely with time, styling and length.

I wholeheartedly agree with your comments about heat protectant. I use it as a safeguard, but am so careful not to fall into a fall sense of security. There are so many videos of women who go to salons for blow outs or silk presses, and hp is used on their hair-- only to later discover extreme damage when trying to revert their curls.

@Adriftinasea
@Adriftinasea Жыл бұрын
As a formerly and now returning heat trained or straight haired natural to me the difference between relaxers and heat is simple: damage over the long term vs immediate damage. Relaxers are immediately damaging. The instant that chemical (basically the equivalent of hair removal cream but buffed with extra oils and conditioners to delay the process time) touches hair, the breakdown begins on the spot and the structural integrity is compromised. Heat eventually, if used over a relatively long period of time, can result in the same exact outcome but the certain variables (how often heat is used, how hot the temp, how much manipulation or stress the hair undergoes mechanically to achieve desired straightness, moisture content of hair, length/age of hair, styling preferences after straightening, protein preservation or supplementation, shampoo frequency, hair texture-fine, coarse, medium, etc) determine the extent to which this outcome is realized for an individual person.

I don’t mind heat damage if that person desires to have their hair straight regularly, primarily because everyone goes natural for a different reason, and some people just can’t do chemical straighteners and still maintain health. Now for my people who are natural and want to keep their natural pattern intact, heat damage is a whole nother beast.

I think in the future I'll using Styling lotion to set my bangs and leave the heat alone altogether. Thanks for these great tips.

My joy! Yeah bangs get heat damaged a lot, people tend to do more passes and put heat on them more regularly because they’re right up front. You can’t see the back, so usually you’ll tend to tolerate it not being as smooth as you would like

I really appreciate the way Linwood breaks down what he is talking about. I am a new natural. I big chopped after transitioning for a year and I see alot of naturals who heat train their hair. Your friend is correct. It's an optical illusion of sorts. Keep in mind that if you look at the ends of your hair, even with the naked eye but definitely under a microscope, you will see that the ends are much slimmer than the roots. Those ends that have been brushed, combed, heated, and tugged at over and over for a great period of time. Long hair is just ends that have survived lol, so it will look like your hair is getting looser the longer it is but it's just the effect of wear. Similar to wearing in shoes. Your size hasn't changed and your shoes are not loose and falling off, its just slightly more relaxed and comfy.

So there was a KZbinr who used to heat-lax or thermalax her hair I think she called it. Basically using heat regularly, like every month blow dry flat iron, and it was to change the texture of her natural hair and it did loosen up the curls. But you don’t want breakage or damage. And that’s what I always assumed heat training was - a way to use heat tools faster and more efficiently over time, but also to change your natural texture without using chemicals. To me heat damage obviously means that your hair is now breaking off and needs protein treatments and deep conditioning etc.

One can get heat damage the very 1st time heat is applied to the hair. Case in point a professional hair stylist who had no concept of heat temperatures for her blow dryer. I told her it was burning my scalp and her reply was that the Dyson dryer adjust to the person's hair. Obviously it was not adjusting because it was too hot. She basically said the same thing about her Dyson flat iron. Needlessly I ended up with heat damage. However, the good thing is that my hair although had straight ends, it did not breakoff. I attribute that to the fact that I deep condition my hair and use Olaplex Bonding products. It was a long process but I ended up have to cut about 4 inches of my hair off.

So can a person maintain healthy (split end free) ends by only blow drying tightly curly hair prior to trim or is the best way a stylist can trim accurately is by flat iron prior to trim?

Great video Linwood! In your video you said "condition before shampooing and deep condition after to protect against heat damage." So, do I prepoo before shampooing? Thanks!

So what if you now have heat damage… can you now attempt/continue heat training or do you have to just cut everything off? Opinion on slowly cutting it off? I don’t want to big chop…

Linwood, I gave my niece Heat Damage about 5 Years ago. Her Damaged hair was Beautiful! Straight, Dense, Full, and Thick! Her relaxed ends were like Fringe in comparison! It has long since been chopped off only for her to give herself Heat Damage, again, within the past 6 months!

relaxers cause cancer and reproductive health problems. So, I guess there's only one option. Though I wouldn't recommend either.

But if your hair has lost its natural curl pattern due to heat, isn't that the definition of heat damage? I suppose heat training just means the curl pattern is lost, but the hair cuticle is still healthy?
@zaire-aniyarobinson2928
@zaire-aniyarobinson2928 2 жыл бұрын
Lol that’s exactly all it is tbh. It just isn’t actual “damage” unless you’re someone who cares about your curl pattern.

Have you seen my video on breakage? It could be a massive help, I discuss handling breakage in great detail in that one. The thing that prevents me from wetting my hair daily is protective styling, and doing pineapples to my hair at night.
