Yellow vs White Golf Balls - Does It Matter?

For my Old eyes (68), I prefer a Bright Orange (Spring/Summer) or Bright Green (Fall/Winter) ball due to foliage color and change at those times of the year. I agree that white balls are hard to pick up in flight at my age now, but the other two are so much easier for me to track in the air and see on the ground! Good Video Gabe. I usually use yellow balls because no one else does. But yellow is also usually easier to spot in the grass, but harder to follow in the sky

One of first things I do when I arrive at a golf course is to check the color of the practice range balls. If the practice area is near the 1st and 9th tee I will use a different color ball for those two fairways then go back to my game ball on the rest of the fairways. I always carry an orange, yellow and white ball not only because of range balls but also to not confuse my ball with my playing partners golf ball. I always play a different color ball than those in my group.

66 here. I use yellow Legato most of the year (thanks for the recommendation, Gabe), but agree it's easier to find white ones when there are a bunch of leaves on the ground. And this time of year I'll sometimes switch to white ones when I'm trying to finish a round at dusk, as I find it easier to see them both in the air and on the ground.

I don’t doubt that you feel the white golf balls are easier to see at dusk than the yellow, but my experiences when I was in my teens and 20’s and played a lot of rounds that ended after dusk and nearly full darkness (albeit in the suburbs so some light on the course from nearby houses, clubhouse, etc.) , I used the yellow golf balls for those last couple of holes and felt I saw the yellow better in really low light conditions. That was a lot of years ago, so I might agree with you now that my eyes are older. There is a lot of variables for this topic. (It is pretty sweet to be the last person or the last group on the course, especially if you are walking and no one is waiting for you to return a riding cart.)

@scottdean27 the yellow ones are easier to follow in the air, but i think it's easier to spot the white ones on the ground when it's so dark that you can't follow a ball more than maybe 50 yards. And yeah, I walk except on a couple of courses I play very infrequently that are very hilly, or have a long haul between the front and back 9.

My golf spy usually finds that yellow balls don’t spin quite as much and fly a little shorter, but they don’t really know why. It’s not enough for me to see the difference. I use the yellow balls, easier for me to track in the air.

I like the yellows in the spring, and whites in fall, it is crazy how the visuals in the way the sun plays with the grass and leaf cover on the course.being 43 I get ya. My fav color was Red Vice Pros, I know Callaway has red but I hate the feeling of hitting Matte balls. I almost never lost the vice’s except in the woods or water.

Agree, matte balls are a strange one for me to get used to. I must say, red is the absoute hardest for me to see / find. I really struggle with red on green for some reason.

This relates to something that I've found that most reviews of rangefinders neglect, or at least don't highlight well: color of the readout/display. As I am red/green colorblind, I have to avoid the red LCD displays. It took me a long time to find one that was both a quality device and had a black display.

I played the Founders Club in Sarasota today. I figured I’d lose enough white balls that I’d be forced to buy some more Lagatos and I’d get yellows for my own test. But I only lost one so I will have to wait. Yes. I judge success in how many balls I lose.

The cover on a yellow ball just feels a bit different to me. Not nearly as bad as matte balls but still makes me wonder about spin and if the ball is wet. Not fair to give a point for the first putt made on scoring system. The second ball at least deserves a putt like all other shots taken. Really skews the tallies when putts are given a point and no second putt allowed when first putt is made.

I like yellow when it's overcast and white when it's sunny. Easier for me to follow the ball, especially off the driver.

I have moved from TP5 to Vice Pro Plus shade and I love the two tone colour scheme, I love the slightly firmer feel. But not sure I would play it in the fall as the two tone colour and falling leaves will look very similar. IMO the colour of the paint on the ball makes no difference, it is all about how easy or not the ball is for you to see.

It comes down to what ball you can see better on clear days, overcast days, bright mornings, or dusk. I recently tried out the multi colored balls from srixon and had a really hard time seeing the mat finished yellow and blue, yellow, and red balls. But for a winter ball they were really good.

Nice video Gabe! I have been using Legato balls for some time now, ever since you started using them. I had been using Kirkland balls before that, but I like the feel of the Legato balls off the clubs. I have to use the yellow balls mainly because I see them better as they are coming down from flight. Also depends on lighting conditions which I usually see the yellow balls better. TP5x yellow his vis for me. They shine like the sun at the right angle in flight, soo easy to track. Ball carries a fee yards more than anything but a Seed SD01(which is another good distance ball). I hit high, towering shots, so holding a green is no issue for me at all. Every one hits different, so it is important to find the right ball for your swing/hitting style. Great video as always.

I’m 71 in a few days and I see the yellow balls a lot better. I will have cataract surgery before next golf season, so I will consider white next summer if I see better. I do like the yellow ball better. I’ll try the Legato also. Thanks for the discount code.

First off… there’s no way a human can hit 2 balls and judge distance and spin. We just can’t reproduce our swing like that. That said , you really should play the 2 balls separately and record the distance ,fairways hit, green hit, and length of putt(s). At the end you would have better stats to compare plus if you shot a better score with one or the other. As a golfer for over 56 years and to choose between a yellow or white would be first visibility. 1. Can I see it better. 2. Distance off the tee. 3 Fairways hit. 4. GIR, and 5. Total putts. If I scored better with white, I’d play white and visa versa with yellow!

As a colorblind golfer it's yellow for me. Someone bought me a dozen orange balls thinking they would be easier to see. They turned out to be one hit wonders. One hit and I wondered where it went. 😂 12 shots and I was all out of orange golf balls.

66YO and my eyes are not what they were when I was playing in my 30's for sure even with contact lenses. In the Summer I play white Legato as the sun is high and no leaves on the fairways. But Fall when the sun is lower and leaves are around I find the yellow Legato much easier to follow in flight as well as to find the ball off the tee. I find the white balls blend in with the leaves like camouflage where a yellow ball will stick out like a sore thumb in comparison.

I do believe on most days, a yellow ball is a bit easier to see/find on course or parts of the course. That said, this year I started playing white balls more often and didn’t seem to have an issue tracking them in the air. Plus a couple of the ball types I was gaming this year only come in white. I’m pretty sure that a long time ago, the theory of the white color golf balls being longer and generally a better ball held true. I’m thinking that was probably mostly in part that the yellow balls of the day were mostly painted yellow. Now that it seems that more manufacturers are going with a yellow dye and not using paint as often, I don’t think there’s as much of a difference like there once was. Yet, many still seem to think that the old theory is still accurate.

Here in Ireland white ball all daylight long, expect for the Autumn when you need a yellow or non white ball, leaf fall! Plus any non white ball for lower light play time. My vision is not terrible but a yellow ball really helps at low light.

I would prefer Yellow, but my sunglass lenses are brown(best for golf) which washes out the yellow. A bright orange is better for me. When the light is low, or raining, yellow is going to help most golfers a lot.

43 Here. I usually play those Srixon balls that are half blue, half yellow. I tried playing Volviks that were blue, but the things felt like rocks coming off the clubface for me. I also made the huge mistake of trying red balls. ... I lost most of those easilly in wooded areas.

I struggle to see yellow balls against foliage when in flight. Against the sky I also struggle in bright sunlight to see yellow balls. I have never had this issue with white balls.

There is NO difference between white or yellow. It's just a visualisation preference. I've been using the yellow AVX now for about 4 years and now I'm in my late 40s I will stay yellow. Just easier to see 😊

I use yellow prov-1s as my game ball and while I don't think it matters one iota score wise I think they're a bit easier to see and there's less of a chance some hack will hit my ball thinking it's their because far fewer people play yellow.

I have ‘vision issues’ as I only see properly out of my left eye. Yellow / Neon balls def look ‘larger’ to me. I’ve tried a whole series of manufacturers. Vice Pro Neon are the best for me in summer and their amazingly priced Tour Yellow in colder months. No real drop off in performance to white balls in my opinion.

First of all, I very much dislike the Kirkland ball. It doesn’t seem to go all that far and it’s hard. The Legato ball is completely different. I would compare it to a TaylorMade Tour Response, but cheaper. It’s got a nice cover that’s durable. I had also tried the Cut Blue, and that was another terrible ball. The cover of that one would have pieces of it shaving off every time you hit it. The Legato definitely doesn’t exhibit that problem. The Legato is now my new gamer ball. It does everything I want, is durable, soft on putting, spins good, and it’s inexpensive. I just bought 4 boxes of white ones for next season. If you like the feel of a TP5 or a Tour Response, try the Legato. I think you’ll like them. I may grab a couple of yellow ones as well.

Yellows suffer no issues compared to white. I now play yellow and they are sooo much easier to see and find. The balls that in many tests including my own that are inferior are Matte finish. Feel was about the same but performance lacked in literally every other catagory. Tried 3 diff brands and it was same across the board. Less distance, spin, apex, dispersion, ect. My believe is that flat finish fights the air whereas gloss glides more easily.

I'm pretty sure pigmentation would change a golf balls performance. I'm sure it alters the plastic in a measurable amount. I however also think it is pretty much negligible to anyone except the highest level golfer.

If you relaxed your wrists and cracked the whip with your swing, you'd gain at least 10mph on your swing. I suggest watching some Paul Wilson videos on that subject. I'm 59 and people are amazed that what looks like easy swings from me are 115mph and up.

Well surprise surprise the colour makes no difference! Why would it? The biggest variable is the player. As for visuals in the rough white will show up much better as yellow as it is closer in the spectrum to green. I am 67 with poor eyesight and white is much easier to see. Possible that you might see a yellow ball better in white waste area but most of the time we play on a green surface. So white will be easier to see.

What happened to your MGI Zip Navigator? You went back to a basic push cart? Why? Honestly, playing a yellow ball makes sense when your playing competitors are all playing a white ball. Nothing worse that everyone hitting to the same area, and you go around trying to identify whose ball is who. If everyone is playing white, then I'll play a yellow ball. Same deal with ball brand. I've had everyone in my group playing Titleist, and it absolutely drives me nuts trying to identify balls when everyone is hitting the same thing. I'll switch brands just to avoid confusion or the possibility of hitting the wrong ball, which is a 2 stroke penalty, which I would prefer not to assess myself for just being lazy and stupid.

Got a dozen legatos just due to your videos…. They were terrible. Nothing like a premium taylormade, callaway or teitlest. £30 also is no cheap. I’d prefer the Wilson triad at the same price which is a much better ball

Not sure where you are getting 160 from, but I hit 9 iron on hole 2 and it was 146 yards to the pin. I hit a 6 iron about 185 normally, but that wind was howling into me on hole 3 and I hit it slightly fat on top of it.
