@@LevelUpRN my patient had a tilted pelvis so I had to think on the spot! I adjusted the bed angle and had her hips slightly higher and it went in like a charm!! Sterile technique ☑️ Clean Urine Sample ☑️ Happy patient ☑️ and eager nursing student ☑️

@@elizabethtrainer9732 I might need a catheter - surgery next month, so hoping I do not get a beginner! This will be embarrassing enough without the fumbling around. I've had to coach my Doctor's assistant on how and when to book the tests I was supposed to get. I'm not a nurse, and I was astounded at how many people cannot do their job properly. We can't expect anyone to be competent.

My best advice regarding this is to always bring a second catheter kit in the event your “aim” isn’t good on the first attempt…

My advice is to show with the camera the insertion itself. What I can only see are hands that cover the entire genital area so nothing can be seen.

Thank you. I’m not a nurse but my mom recently had surgery and needs help with catheters for a few days. I’m hoping that I can do it in such a way that is comfortable.

They had to do this to me several weeks ago. I had had surgery and not gone to the bathroom for hours. They did this to empty my bladder. It was the first time a straight cath was used on me.

In my early days of being a nurse, I emptied a catheter and forgot to clamp it shut! I returned to the room later to see there was urine all over the floor. I never forgot to do that again. - Ellis

You should definitely learn the female anatomy before you try this procedure. I’m surprised you don’t know (assuming you are a nursing student or nurse)

@@IrishAlways8 An educated guess would be - a patient asking this question for home self catheraztion. Normally patients wouldn't know for sure.

The end of the catheter tube is open and urine will drain out. In many facilities you must have a second RN for catheter insertions so I will usually ask them to hold the sample cup and they "catch" the urine for the sample. When they've gotten enough, the rest of the urine drains into the container or a urinal.

I believe you put on sterile gloves last..atleast I do..is that not a state regulation anymore?! You don't have sterile gloves on while opening everything up

Incorrect. Everything in the kit is sterile & if you touch it without sterile gloves on, it is no longer sterile. Once she touched the vaginal area with her left hand, she never moved it, keeping her sterile field.

Non sterile gloves are on only when cleaning your sterile field prior to putting the supplies on the table.You then use a hand sanitizer before touching the one you lay under the pt then the procedures as she did them.
