Lewis read this during "The Rant is Due" because he thought it gave an important insight into the idea of what mental health really means and felt it might be helpful since many of us think we are losing it.
Those who were watching the live feed that night seemed to agree that it should be posted.
So here it is.

@@Dr_Do-Little Some of us 'illogical' people know better than to confuse Logic with THE Truth. The mind is a tricky thing and should not be trusted. The mind tricks us into THINKING that that which APPEARS logical must be THE Truth... but this is NOT really the case. In an instant NEW information can enter into our mind's limited Awareness and make THAT which currently APPEARS logical to be seen as illogical... and vice versa. People rarely consider that THE Truth hides from the mind by APPEARING to be ILLOGICAL. To start KNOWING... we need to STOP depending so much on our intellect and its love of logic. We are so much MORE than we *THINK* we are. The mind is way over rated. This may not appear logical but it's often so.

Great letter. I've said it for years: You don't build a society judging all its many creatures on their ability to climb a tree. Some of us are fish, some of us are birds, some of us don't even want to climb a damn tree in the first place! While I appreciate that there is such a thing as a brain gone bad and those people need care and support (and proper funding to the right people!!!) it needs saying that: *not all behaviours, quirks, divergances in thinking, not all emotional reactions or interpretations of oneself are A MENTAL FUCKING ILLNESS!* Society all too often parades under a veil of concern but what it hides is conformity. Brutal, heartless conformity - especially under capitalism. I'm not saying we make some hippy society where everyone just doodles and sings and makes reed baskets all day, but we desperately need a greater understanding of and appreciation for, how *different people are different.*

I was always confused by the notion that socialism was the friendliest system to the outcast. Elon Musk was bullied and mocked as a child for being ten times smarter than everyone else. Mark Zuckerberg is literally a meme because he doesn't fit our society's definition of 'charismatic.' Steve Jobs was never the most well-liked in any room he entered, and Walt Disney was quite the weirdo growing up. All of these people found wealth and success due to their desire to be, and aptitude for being, different. What made them outcasts made them the revered figures they are today. I'm not trying to oust you as wrong or silence you - I've just seen one-too-many oddballs (who very much fit into the mold of what many would consider 'mentally ill' just because they're different) find what success means to them. There's too much evidence that capitalism is very kind to those who think differently and push humans forward. Capitalism - historically - has been the friend of the weirdo. And all of the 'greats' of history show as much.

In my day I've been called lazy, unfocused and underachieving. They tested me many times only to find I was smarter than most of my classmates. Funny thing was I was smarter than some of the testers so I could cover up the long term abuse I lived with (because I wanted to be normal or at least have a normal family). Much of the letter hit home even though logic is not hard for me, people are. I was beaten up in school for being a smartass and a nerd then went home for the abuse for not standing out. I wish I could hug the lady who sent the letter she sounds like my kind of person. I wish I could help her more.

We live in a seriously fucked up world. Where if you think differently than anyone else your weird. My son is a brilliant young man. He had a brilliance in him at a young age that was well beyond that of his regularly smart brother. My son struggled all through school trying to conform to what the education system says is normal. He struggled thinking himself stupid because he didn't think like everyone else. Yet he doesn't see what I see. A brilliant young man who while yes may have grown up an ugly ducking it just a beautiful swan waiting to show his true colors. I know my son is capable of ANYTHING he sets his mind to. Well almost anything. He'll never be renowned physicist, or scholar. His brain isn't wired to do those jobs. Yet his creativity is off the scale. I've seen his mind work and come up with ideas to solve problems most never dream of. The amazing this is many actually work. As a Father, I can only saw to you Gamesman never stop believing in yourself. You are capable of great things. You just have to figure out what those great things are. Don't let the world weigh you down with it's crap. Rise like cream to the top and show them all they were wrong.

amen!! i could have written that letter, with one exception... i would have added that it is poverty, more than simple conformity, that dictates human society today. as she mentioned, you can work your ass off every day but that doesn't mean you'll be fairly compensated for it. a lot, a LOT, of nonconformist types are also financially marginalized, told that they are worthless burdens to the upstanding, toeing the lines, normal people. humanity is missing out on the talents of so many other people who focus on earning money rather than contributing their natural gifts to the world. humanity places value on the wrong things ....

As someone diagnosed with Aspergers and ADHD I found this beautifully articulated letter resonates me. Oddly I lately found logic to be a comfort to the sensory overloaded chaos which exasperates my anxieties. I have myself come to the conclusion in recent years that ego is the cause of most of the world's problems. As a race, we are emotionally immature. The ambitious and powerful, indeed most of us, are children playing at adults. Society encourages people to think selfishly and fearfully which is how young children think but they don't know any better. Until we evolve past this ego driven, selfish immaturity, we shall never escape the social ills that continue to plague us.

I have this saying, The world is an asylum and we are the inmates. Basically, we are all "off" in some way. Growing up with autism, I learned that logic is not a universal language, despite what I learned from Star Trek. Take a kitchen for example. Not everyone will assign the same cabinet the same use. The one left of the sink could be glasses for one person and bowls for another. I think Lewis put it best that we are all snowflakes. We are all unique.

Wonderful letter....Letter writing is and can be a great art form...I love the letters of many poets and artists. And just ordinary folks. Mark Twain and Van Gogh’s letters come to mind for some reason. Louis, I think it “takes one to know one”...We sense our “genius “ ( to borrow from the storyteller and mythologist Micheal Meade) in the words of this Young Woman’s writing. I only hope Her writing will receive the publication exposure / publication it deserves. Thanks again for sharing Her fine letter with us. To the the young Lady, “ keep going”! Here’s a little “ somethin” I wrote back in 2005 along similar lines. After some standardized testing in the fourth grade the Principal and his assistant told my Mother I'd never amount to anything more than a plumber or an electrician. They Said They said I'd never amount to more than an electrician or plumber. I guess they were right. I plumb the depths of soul. roll over feelings and thoughts get caught in obsessions they were right I'm an electrician that works with premonitions primordial energies I sit and watch for electrifying moments a word or a sound that set off a bomb and starts my heart ticking wicking off beads of sorrow, ineligibility, inequality " equality" they all shouted. kick ball fill my mind with love this time 2005

I have watched documentaries of young people with down syndrome and they just tear me up and fascinate me. They do their best to be so independent but sometimes family wants to overprotect and shelter them. They are really special people and so much to offer the world, if they would be allowed to venture more in regular society. A lot of times, they are regulated to menial work and must stay close to home. It's inspiring to see them exert independence but sometimes sad to see them curtailed in that way because of their condition. We are a society that frowns upon people who are different than us instead of seeing the true beauty of a person who has different capabilities.

Regarding "freezing weather" - is absolutely correct. We live in a global heating world where climates are radically destabilizing. This means some areas - such as New England, the Northeast to Iceland may have tremendously colder weather and climates - this is the due to the complete destabilization of the Arctic ocean... now with only 25% of ice coverage - the warmer waters mean the that Polar chill areas are pushed off the pole and down toward the only solid ice mass left there - mostly Greenland. This is the polar vortex stuff... and like a wobbly hoola-hoop the circumpolar flow will dip lower and slower, it can/will bring anomalous cold, as well as heat and well, destabilized weather. See some nice data visualization from the University of Washington a.atmos.washington.edu/~ovens/wxloop.cgi?npole_h250_wind+/-168//. So she is absolutely correct. Regions there and surely Northampton, Mass may be horribly cold in our new destabilizing world.

I have literally been trying to describe what makes me tick for a long time to so called, "Normies"(you know, well adjusted, conformed adults), and I literally heard my life described by the sounds coming out of your mouth, that reflected the words written to you by my mental health doppleganger in this world; though I'm sure I have an entire subcontinent of creative relatives after hearing this. Thank you. I work 3 jobs to barely pay my bills, but I love what I do....hands down. And even with all that working, the rest of my time is devoted to being a music producer: but "that's not work..." so nobody pays me for it. Unless, maybe, I sell my artistic soul to the devil in exchange for pictures of dead presidents. But, if you knew me, you'd know that'll never happen with a capital MIDDLE FINGER!!! Meanwhile, I'm scoffed at, getting the head-shakes, all because "existing in happiness" isn't allowed in this late stage of crony capitalism. Thank you for relaying this message, which should be required reading in teacher-trainings, parental guides, legislative bodies, police forces, etc.. First, I will take a moment to digest these words, and then, with the people in my life - immobilized and in pain, and sabotaged by a society they would benefit, I will share your video.

I DO wish there was a place for me!! I'm brilliantly creative, insightful, a problem-solver, and compassionate... BUT ... I lack the organizational skills to... even finish this sentence right now... when I'm speaking outloud, I sound like a moron (sound familiar?) My brain moves faster than my fingers!! Let's try again.. I lack the organizational skills necessary to make my way in this world. I'm not allowed to have my kids live with me full time because I'm "too emotional". I feel like all of the things that I'm supposed to be able to do in this world are always just out of reach and it tears me up inside all day long. I have also been told that I'm broken. That I'm not trying hard enough. I'm selfish. I don't deal with things well... (that was spoken by a doctor, an hour after giving birth for the first time). In my mind, I can see exactly who it is that I want to be. In reality, I'm trying to get there. Every day I wake up and attempt to do things. Occasionally they work out well. Usually, I fuck it all up somehow. I'm not going to stop trying. I have 2 wonderful children who rely on me. We love each other. We miss each other deeply when we have to go days without seeing each other. I tell them that we carry each other with us and that I love them always no matter what. I think that if I give them unconditional love for their whole lives, no matter what, then it will help them to succeed in life. If I'm there for them. If I tell them to believe in themselves no matter what. Maybe that is a recipe to produce a whole person, ready to take on the emotional and mental rigours of our world. Our beautiful, messy, unfair, fucked up, perfect world.

You just described my personality! I got diagnosed with ADHD when I was 27 that’s 4 years ago now. The only reason it got discovered was because I went to rehab for an out of control Coke addiction. I was put on medication, and slept 12 hours. When I woke up after 12 hours it was like that my entire life I only used 45% of my brain. Because that day my brain was running 80-90% the world that I knew didn’t exist, I went down with PTSD and depression after that because I couldn’t handle my new reality. But I went from doing 2 grams of cocaine every single day. To not even think about after that day! I’m really lucky, I live in Denmark and I have a home, free doctors my normal physician, I have a psychiatrist, a shrink, and a social care support/coach. And my medication is only costing me around 5 dollars a month the rest is covered by our healthcare services. I would not be here without that support, and I still struggle sometimes but I just completed my IT Security/support qualification at university it took 4 years. It’s the only thing I want to do, something that interest me and makes me feel happy. I’m especially good to solve high complex problems because my brain is around 4 times faster than normal people. I’m really good at that but I can’t take keep my apartment clean, and normal everyday stuff that are so simple for normal people. I have learned a lot by my experiences and are using that as a way forward! I know that US and Americans don’t have my possibilities and options, I actually got paid to take my degree, which was “free” covered by tax. I received 2000USD a month to attend my education because my handicap prevents me from working on the side and also complete my degree. Yes my tax is high, 38% in the starting bracket. But it comes in around 67-70% total. But people before me also paid that so I could succeed in life. If you have a happy educated citizens the country benefits from it. Because productivity, increase in tax revenue more innovation. It actually cost a hell of a lot more not doing anything about it like in the states

@@commonsense31 The US is fucked. Some good people here but the cards are so stacked against us as to feel utterly hopeless to make any change.

This IS the very best “WTF” Moment from all the WTF MOMENTS for which this great pundit has been known for so long! He has brought forward and into our stream of consciousness this topic (like so many others of great importance) WHICH SHOULD BE AT THE FRONT OF EVERYONE’S LIST OF CONVERSATIONAL TOPICS WHENEVER THEY OPEN THEIR PIE-HOLES TO SPEAK IN PUBLIC that I am now ashamed I was not much of one prior to hearing this supposed RANT! Bravo, Good Sir! YOU ARE A GREAT HUMANIST AND A TRUTH TELLER EXTRAORDINARE!
