Same here at Wrigley in Chicago. And Ernie Banks would sign autographs for free. No kidding. He'd walk slowly around the backstop screen. Kids would pour down from the seats, roll up their scorecards and stick 'em through the screen, and Ernie would autograph them. Every damned one until he got 'em all. Cokes were a quarter and hot dogs were a buck, and they didn't serve soooshee or however the hell you spell that crap!

@Brent McWilliams The Pirates are a good team and tolerable in baseball, unlike the stinking Yankees, dumbass Astros, or the fucking Orioles. I remember watching Willy Stargell get call for a foul ball when the pitch was so far and away that it hit his bat while still on his shoulder. The umpire called, strike!, and Willy looked at him like what the hell, it was really funny and Stargell always had a genuine love for the game.

It had lost all appeal with their catering to people with money and their kids (they put in a ferris wheel and other fair rides).

Re that Padres segment at 2:47 - As for the Padres charging fans to see them play, don't forget, this is the same franchise that was so mind-numbingly bad in the mid-1970s that after one game at old Jack Murphy Stadium their then-owner, McDonalds' founder Ray Kroc, once grabbed the public address mic and apologized for their piss-poor play.

The first clip made me think of a time when I played baseball, we beat a team 53 - 0. We only got to play maybe 3 innings. My Dad was the coach, and I only got to play one inning. Then, around midnight that night, one of the other parents called my dad and bitched because their son was crying because he didn't get to play the whole game.

I used to live in the Tampa area, where the Rays play and the Yankees have spring training, and I saw far more signs, bumper stickers and T-shirts with Yankees stuff than I ever did for the Rays. I think half of all New York fans must winter in the South.

When I was a kid, the closest teams geographically were the (damned) Yankees, the Mets, and the Phillies. But this was the era of Bob Gibson and Lou Brock, so I became a Cardinals fan. The rant from Springfield IL about Drumpf red hats and Cardinals red hats was pretty amazing. Fortunately, I'm just a Cardinals fan.... 😁

I feel your pain about the Orioles, Lew, I really, really do. My local team, the Mariners, have been phoning in mediocrity for 20 fucking years. However, I have to give the Munglers a lot of credit for this year. They missed the Wild Card by a quarter of a game [losing to the fucking Yankees], but they busted a gut the last two months of the season. I have a Hell of lot more respect for this season's team on 01 October than I did on Labor Day, that's for sure.

Sad thing is, the Mariners' last season will most likely better than the Seahawks' current one. And so far the new Kraken are not really killing it, either. @@einundsiebenziger5488 Well, I pretty much X'd the Seahawks season off when Wilson went down. I'm a lifelong Seahawks fan, but our division is too competitive to come back from 2-5. The NHL made some rule changes on expansion teams and the GM's of the rest of the league were determined not to make the same mistake they made when Vegas got a team. There was almost zero chance the Squids ['Kraken' is SUCH a dumb name...] were going to the playoffs in their expansion year. I also foresee a change in coaches. Hakstol isn't the most inspiring head coach in the world. GruBe aus Washington! from an old cavalry corporal who has fond memories of being stationed in Germany as a young man. The BRD helped a pretty dumb and naive 18-year-old me grow up some, and I've never forgotten the favor.

We used to get a bleacher seat, hot dog and pop for $5 back in the 80s at Tiger stadium. Now it's $15 for a shitty draft beer at Comerica Park. They do have one stand on the right field concourse that has $8 drafts, but they are only 12 Oz and it's PBR. Good thing all Detroit teams are so bad I refuse to shell out the kind of money they want us to pay. I've saved thousands by not going games anymore. I'd go again if we ever had a decent team again, but I'm already 50 so time is running out.

We usually support the local schools teams, go watch our friends kids etc. I also get a lot more done on Sundays if I ignore the Lion's. I can watch every NFL game in an hour by watching the KZbin highlight video.

Something many may not know regarding the Orioles and Yankees lore: the latter started in Baltimore before moving to NY. For me, I don't like the Yankees. I cannot unsee that called HR. Fan interference all the way. If that happened in Baltimore then I can guarantee the Yanks would've screamed for something to be done. Bleh... One play led to 14 years of losing. No offense I hope, but I always hated the Braves. The only reason is my old roommate was a Braves fan. He was an a**hole so we always rooted against the Braves to piss him off. This was in the Greg Maddox days so they were good. We are from Michigan so it is a strange team to follow, out of the region, NL, etc. We did get the Atlanta station (tnt I think) so we did have some Braves games on TV. We always watched them because they were the only NL games we could watch back then. Have no opinion of them now, the Tigers are so bad I can usually make it till June then I quit watching baseball till the playoffs. Too painful.

The only Baseball team I care about at all is the Chicago Cubs. I'm a second generation fan, from the time I was about 8 and we first got cable in Oregon. (We went from 5 channels to 12, one of which was 9C, and that was the reason my cheapskate dad sprung for Cable, he and my mom were both Cubs fans since the late 50s.)
