Thanksgiving. Traditionally a time for family gatherings, where Americans indulge in endless hours of eating, disagreeing with relatives, and watching usually uninspiring football. Or for your host, it's a time to flee the country, which may or may not have something to do with his mother's inability to cook a turkey properly. As usual, Lewis has his own unique perspective on the holiday, and in this collection of rants he addresses whether it's ok to cater to vegetarians, how to handle political discussions, and the horror that is Thanksgiving-themed Pringles.

Thanksgiving, for the past 35 years, was for me a portal leading into the month-long hell that was Christmas season at my old job. Working in the freight business at that time of year SUCKED. This year, I am thankful that I am now retired and I don't have to do any of that shit anymore. Deck the Halls. And if they mouth off, deck your obnoxious overpolitical relatives too.

I once invited my sister and her husband for Thanksgiving and after that, I was bombarded with emails about how to cook the bird, what to serve with it, etc. And once they got here, she and my husband almost came to blowsover how long to cook it! Needless to say, she was never invited back. It's not worth it.

Last year was the best Thanksgiving I ever had, and I am all set to have it again this year. Why? Because I am on the other side of the international date line, about as far away from my relatives as I can get without having to leave the planet (though I still kind of want to leave the planet). Plus, I can use the excuse of a bad internet connection to cut any and all Zoom/Skype calls with them short.

I'm with him on the "vegan" stuff. One day a year we get together to eat holiday food and you want to force your choice on others?
@Zuraneve
@Zuraneve 2 жыл бұрын
Not all vegetarians or vegans insist their choices get forced onto others though. Not even most of them. It's also kind of rude to invite someone to dinner, then not provide anything at all they can eat except bread. My family are die-hard carnivores, so I expect the only foods to be offered are ones that will literally make me spend hours in the bathroom afterwards if I eat them. I've tried eating a little something both before and after dinner, then only having bread during. Then I get yelled at for only eating bread. So my choices are, get yelled at for asking for ONE vegetarian dish, go hungry, get yelled at for only eating bread, spend hours in the bathroom being miserable, or get yelled at for not going to Thanksgiving at all. I usually pick the last option. I guess asking for green beans or mashed potatoes to have the bacon bits on the side instead of mixed in is just too much to ask for.

@enid0mom 2 жыл бұрын
My Thanksgiving memories are so much different than it seems like everyone else has. First, my mother made the tastiest, moistest turkey imaginable. Her giblet gravy was heavenly. Her hybrid cornbread dressing (she was raised in Arkansas, but her mother died when she was 11. I never figured out how she learned to cook.) beat anything I have ever eaten anywhere. Instead of all cornbread, she would use equal amounts of cornbread and dried white bread. We lived in a tiny town in miserable Eastern New Mexico and family would drive 1,000 miles to eat my Mom’s turkey. It had to be for the turkey and fixin’s because there was nothing to do in that town except Friday evening football during the season. (She died in 1981, so this was before everyone flew everywhere.) Then, I also don’t remember any family conflict over religion or politics. Virtually all of us were Roman Catholics who were FDR Democrats. (And EVERYONE smoked but me.) There was only one ongoing feud between my mother and a paternal aunt. My aunt had a grudge against my mother for something she didn’t even do. My aunt NEVER showed up for family holidays, so there were no touchy feelings around. Before we moved to God forsaken New Mexico when I was in high school, we lived in Denver where almost all my Dad’s family lived, so there wasn’t a holiday that we didn’t all spend together. Maybe my mind has cleansed itself of any negative stuff. My sister’s memories were the polar opposite of mine, so who knows. There hasn’t been a holiday remotely like that since my mother died.

I have a dear friend who was born on Christmas Day. She mentioned one year when our friend group took her out for her birthday (so we also exchanged Christmas gifts) that as a child and a teen she was always really pissed off and resentful that every time someone gave her a birthday present she had to give them a gift back. So the friend committee got together and decided the next year we were moving her birthday to June 25. We threw a massive surprise party and after she stopped crying joyful tears she was happier than I’d ever seen her. After that year we always celebrated her birthday on June 25th

I have two brothers born the week before Christmas. My youngest brother came home Christmas Eve. My parents woke me up to see him under the Christmas tree. I was the oldest and I think they were expecting a different reaction. I looked around, observed him and said to my parents…. This BETTER not be the only thing Santa is bringing us. This story was retold every Christmas as if my 6 year old self was just a horrible big sister. The whole thing could have been avoided if before waking me, my parents had dragged all of Santa’s other gifts from their hiding spot and put them under the tree. But I guess THEY thought another baby brother WAS the best present. Not to the 6yo who now had two brothers in diapers to change and bottles to help with. But I did get my telescope so Santa was forgiven.

Our family thanksgivings were somewhere between good and please can I go outside and play in the freezing weather rather than be subjected to this. My mother would make a turkey, occasionally it would be dry but her gravy was plentiful and covered up the desiccation. The sides were always good. So what was the problem. My grandmother would be there. And to say she was an unpleasant woman is like saying ….well I won’t go there. We were only aloud to speak if an adult asked us to, although my grandmother did talk to us it was mostly demeaning, horrible jabs at my sister. She spared me mostly. She loved to demean my mother and if the food was not to her satisfaction she would let my mom know it no uncertain terms that it was horrible. The saving grace is my mom always had lovely wine with the meal. And we all had a glass…or two. It made it somewhat bearable. So there you had two kids and their mom half crocked staring at their plates and wishing it was over soon. Oh and yes I became an alcoholic. Such is life when you start drinking a 5years of age. As an adult and having my own family the holiday was the opposite and always a joy…..until we moved across the country to be near my wife’s sister. The in-laws put on the holiday now. Replete with the requisite fighting, dry turkey, watery lumpy flavorless gravy, stuffing from a box, grey overcooked peas, and salad. Salad! Why is there salad?

Ah, Thanksgiving. No matter how much I try to pare things down, since I've only ever had to feed a max of 3 people, I always end up making enough to feed a small army. Especially mashed potatoes. I swear, its like 2 potatoes can make enough mash to fill a 50-gallon drum. I guess growing up in the South, my brain's just trained to make massive feasts for any and all holidays and birthdays.

My daughter says she is not cooking traditional Thanksgiving food but I can come to dinner. I was polite but you all know what I really wanted to say.

Maybe I'm biased but Canadian Thanksgiving is better. It's the second weekend in October. It's often still warm out and not so close to Christmas. Still have to put up with the relatives though.

Try being a cross country driver, you haven’t seen your family for three weeks. And then the Truck Stop you were planning on having thanksgiving turkey at, decided not to do it this year!
