TEDxDiliman - Lourd de Veyra - Art, Art Ka Diyan!

Lourd de Veyra is a new media artist and journalist. He is a four-time Palanca Awardee and the recipient of the Free Press Literary Award. His social commentaries are expressed and followed in his popular "Word of the Lourd" video series.
In this "Word of the Lourd" episode, especially created for and presented at TEDxDiliman, he seeks to answer that infuriating question: What role does art play in shaping society?"
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. 14 years old ako at isang Grade 9 student pero para sa akin may point nga naman siya. Sa modernong panahon ngayon, karamihan sa aming mga kabataan ay hindi napapahalagahan ang mga ganitong sining na may gustong ipahiwatig sa lipunan. Kami ba naman itong babad sa facebook at computer games eh malamang para sa amin mas madali talagang makita ang mababaw at negatibong sulok ng mga sining na ito kesa sa magandang motibo nito na baguhin tayong lahat. Ginawa ang film na ito para ituro sa atin na pahalagahan ang malikhaing gawa ng ating kapwa, alalahanin ang pagod, ang pawis, enerhiya, at oras na kanilang inilaan para lamang makatulong sa pagsulong ng kabutihan sa mundo. Wala nga namang kwenta ang Art kung wala namang may alam kung ano nga ba ang magandang nagagawa ng Art. Gaya nito, marami sa inyo ang hindi nakaappreciate sa video na ito at yun ang gusto kong ipahiwatig. Tignan natin ang positive side ng isang 'to at ng iba pang bagay na makikita natin sa paligid :)

Isa itong probe and exploration sa gampanin ng art sa lipunan; konkretong ibinigay na mga halimbawa ang mga gawa ng mga aktibista (tulad ng el fili ni rizal) dahil kinukuwestyon nito ang lagay ng art sa lipunan: kung paano ito itrato. Looking back at this video, Lourd wasn't trying to make a point. There is no critique. It's just a bunch of thoughts sewn together just to intrigue the viewers and ask a question, as with most of his old stuff. This isn't being full of himself and preachy as much as it is being laidback and restrained. People look at this from the wrong perspective.

Art cannot change the serious stuff (war, catastrophe, climate change, etc). External factors yan e. If art is about the human condition, edi ang mindset lang ng tao ang mababago ng art. In short, it gives us perspectives. Art changes or affects how we view things. It changes people itself. Pero kung external factors nga ang paguusapan, wala talagang magagawa ang art, powerless. Siguro ang ability ng art is to make people view things in a different way (vision), and it can make people come together to believe in that thing. Pero kung may patutunguhan ba yung vision na yun - who the fuck knows?

Therefore, a change in perspective is needed in order to address externalities. The external is an effect of the internal.

Perspectives can trigger change in society, in history; it can move people into action in order to unify and overcome the natural and social struggles that they have to face. Just like the Ilustrados managed to teach the people how to think and see for themselves and make a decision for themselves through their literature back in the Spanish colonial era which then led the scattered groups of people into becoming one unified nation. while i agree with your statement, i wouldn't go as far as to call the video pointless. as many commenters below have stated, maybe the point is to get people talking and conversing about art. i remember walking the streets of vietnam a few years back and saw that propaganda materials had actually been transformed into art. i guess in that way, art can be a glimpse into a people's culture. it's a symbolization, a totem, of how people live at a certain time and place.

his discussions about art is certainly way out of the real picture of art... Things happen because of our activities. Like cutting trees, throwing garbage anywhere, catastrophes affecting us (it's not an art!) Art is actually the part when we still find enjoyment or try to move on of what's been happened even if there are flood, storm, or war. The progress of our culture is done because of art. The reason why we can communicate is because of art... because of these writings introduced... The houses we lived in made because of art... How we can make it stronger... But above all, art is made so we can express ourselves... Art is even used so our bad experiences, anxieties and frustrations will be healed and normalized... In other words, so we can express our freedom of expression... However, generally, man doesn't know how to use this... They have certainly abused this right. They do not know that freedom of expression ends when we have stepped into other people's rights not to be corrupted. We do not need to be naked so we can express total sublimation. We have the responsibility to our audiences... So, subtle messages should be discouraged... Freedom of expression goes with responsibility!!! And lastly, providing solutions to the problems he has mentioned is actually an art!.. Actually, it's the solution!
