Life in Jars?

Life in Jars?

4 жыл бұрын

In this video I talk a lot about lichens, different kinds and growths forms and what they actually are. I also take a little dive in the topic of ecological succession, a phenomenon in which lichens play a role.
Enjoy!

They're fascinating close up so I loved those microscope shots! Also in Tasmania where I live I've heard them pronounced both ways but 'like-ens' seems to be more common.

I LOVE your attitude!!! You never fail to bring a smile to my face...but I must tell you that closeup of a fly was neither a lichen OR a licked, it was a fly. This was fascinating, I have used certain lichens to dye wool different colours, including the best natural magenta ever. This was delightfully entertaining and educational at the same time...and I just learned my country has an official National Lichen...I have always found that one to be very beautiful in its form, and it even has a pleasant fungal scent. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasms. Great shirt by the way.🖤🇨🇦

Yes, lichens! (I say ligh-ken) - one of my favourite macro subjects! My grandfather was a key part of the British Lichen Society for many decades here in the south of England U.K. Lichens are such philosophical little collective beings. Endlessly fascinating and incredibly ecologically important as you say. The bigger the surface area, the better the air quality; proper litmus tests for pollution too! If you need help with identification I have two galleries on my website dedicated to them! 😀

I keep seeing some really cool growth forms at work, mostly on punky stumps. They are very delicate, and I always see them at the beginning of the day, so I'd destroy the samples in my pocket before I could get them home, even if I put them in a collection tube. Eventually I'll see one near the end of the day, or just mark the location so I can go back for it. I'm dying to look at them under the digital microscope, they're very different from the ones I've observed so far. There seem to be some kind of fruiting bodies or similar structures.

There is some new research that suggests at least one large family of lichens consist not of just one fungus and algae/cyanobacteria, but ALWAYS 2 fungi and the photosynthetic partner. Then I saw another bit of research about bacteria living in and on the lichens being somewhat consistent between examples of the same species, thus suggesting they're also a standard part of the symbiosis.

Hello Life In Jars?, I have been watching your videos for over a while now, and I would like to ask you a question. I have been inspired to make my own ecosphere aquaruim, but I don't know where to find the resources. Naturally, this would be a weird question, BUT we happen to live in the same city. All the ponds in my area are too low into the ground to get a hold of. Where do you get your resources? If this is too much of a privacy issue, you don't have to respond! Love your content!
