Whether computer generated or shot on film/digital, the shots still have to be composed, lit, blocked, etc. It may have been mostly digital, but it's still the same principal of cinematography, especially because they shot on Alexa in front of bluescreen. And Miranda, just like the other nominees, did an incredible job at it. Btw.: Mauro Fiore won an Oscar for his Cinematography on Avatar, guess that doesn't really count for you either? Please educate yourself about the topic before you make statements like that.

If you had done some research, you would've known that Mauro Fiore (agree with his win or not) was only involved with shooting 30% of Avatar. now tell me, do you really think he was worthy of an Oscar? The key aspect of being a cinematographer is the collaboration with the director focusing on creating the best images for the film. Ang Lee was collaborating with the visual effects artist more than Miranda. Now yes, Miranda did help with the lighting of the film (he also played a key part in the design of the tank) but I think he got more credit than he should've got, he is a good cinematographer (Curious Case of Benjamin Button) but an Oscar over Deakins or Richardson? I think not To quote you "Please educate yourself about the topic before you make statements like that"

Anna Karenina and Skyfall were SO beautiful!! And they weren't CGI. Roger Deakins' shots were unique and well crafted for an action movie like Skyfall. Life of Pi winning cinematography was like Lord of the Rings winning instead of Amelie back in 2001; both films were beautifully shot, and a lot of scenes weren't handcrafted from scratch. I would have preferred Amelie over LOTR :/ But I have to admit, Life of Pi was pretty beautiful!!!

I can't believe much of the comments have been about how Roger Deakins was robbed. Dudes, Life of Pi was VFX heavy, but who do you think was responsible for the final look of the film? If the framing, CGI, or anything was off it was on Miranda. Especially! because he had to do it on a blue screen. Deakins had sets to light, Miranda had to improvise a set in his mind. No way they did the CGI before post. Deakins did an amazing job and will win eventually, but he was certainly not "robbed".

You are wrong. The Cinematography when the girls were performing the Indian dance had beautiful cinematography. Besides, they should have just put him in the sea continued the story. The beauty is that the cinematographer knew how to play the color, the reflections, the waves, the sky etc...It was extraordinary!

Roger Deakins was robbed. Life of Pi was shot 95% of the time with a blue screen, and thereafter made very, very pretty in the VFX room! Roger Deakins "started from scratch" with ordinary shots in the movie, and made them stunningly beautiful. This pissed me off.

How about you film a movie against a blue screen not knowing what the final product looks like until the effects are finished? People don't understand that cinematography is more than just pretty pictures. It is how the camera moves and flows around the action of the story. It is how the images play into the story, not only how "pretty' the images are. It's lighting, shot composition, and focus. Although I would have preferred Skyfall to win, Life of Pi was a worthy winner in my opinion.
