Ryan, something that might help with unloading your truck of the barge would be "truck ramps", simular to what people use to raise the truck when working under them. Even home made will work, each time position the ramps (lake water levels might make it difficult to make a permanent solution) so the barge ramps come onto them, leveling out the valley when unloading. I hope that the current weather in BC is not affecting you.
@mywildholm
@mywildholm 2 ай бұрын
Yes! That is a simple solution and I did make a prototype out of wood that worked quite well. Light weight, maneuverable and simple to use. It didn't take long for the truck to completely destroy the wood version, but we do have proof of concept! Thanks so much for your continued support! -Ryan

Have you ever considered putting some outriggers on the barge?
@mywildholm
@mywildholm 2 ай бұрын
We have actually, but haven't had the time to actually design, build and execute. At some point, I would love to have extendible outriggers to assist with the potential roll, but really, the barge is surprising stable. Even so, the additional safety from outriggers would provide a terrific safety buffer. Thanks for watching! -Ryan

@mywildholm yeah, they did that with black jogging suits or sweat pants, it continues down the side from the sweatshirt or hoody, some wear variations, light to darker, I believe you have to wash it soon after, so you don't rot the material away, maybe use a diluted solution, I bet it would be neat in blue too, like leaves falling from the sky. Just thought you would like it, since Canada's tree in the Maple, and it would be uniquely your own

I like the idea of putting post outriggers on the port and starboard front side of the barge Also some 12foot aluminum planks to assist with on loading and loading the truck. keep an eye on the auctions for semi truck ramps.
@mywildholm
@mywildholm 2 ай бұрын
We actually did consider outriggers at one point, but then realized that loading is actually not that "tippy" (as long as we are careful). The barge actually came with spuds to stabilize the potential roll, but they are super heavy and a hassle to use. If we were ever to dredge, we would install the spuds, but we don't see that happening as the waters here are protected and dredging is not permitted. I think Aluminum ramps would be a useful benefit. Thanks, I'll add them to my auction watch-list! We sincerely appreciate you watching and commenting. -Ryan

Hi Ryan and Melodie, Jim and Karen here watching you from Australia. We’ve been enjoying your videos immensely. We used to farm but are now pretty much retired. However, old habits of work de hard, the ramps on your barge have been driving me nuts watching you struggle with them and they are dangerous but there is a simple fix. If you obtain a piece of metal that is strong enough just lay it parallel to the outside rails use a tube hinge with a solid stopper on it. Attach your winch cable to the far end of the steel you’ve fitted. They will stand vertical to the ramps and will afford great purchase and extra leverage for your winches. The angle f attack s currently to acute the winch power advantage at the existing angle is lost by trying to pull the ramps horizontally The additional pieces will weigh very little but the leverage advantage will be awesome. It will also allow you to raise the rams to a vertical position thus helping you maintain a more balance barge. Half an hour with a welder would do it. At the moment thar winches really are dangerous. Cheers from down under.
@mywildholm
@mywildholm 2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion! I must confess though, I would need to see a sketch to better understand your plan. I have thought about welding an extension to the posts that the winches are mounted on, and fixing a roller on top. Then routing the winch strap up through the extension and then back down to the ramps. This would make the lift angle more like 45 degrees rather than the current 20 degrees and I would be able to raise the ramps to nearly verticle. The other thing I thought of was just biting the bullet and going hydraulic. I welcome your thoughts. -Ryan

@@mywildholm - no problem. I have also discovered that since I moved out on my own, Halloween doesn’t mean much to me anymore. Hey guys wow the Log Cabin fell down well you need to go and and you need to get every log that is in good shape and protected from the elements so it doesn't rot and all the other ones that are kind of not good you can burn for Camp firewood or whatever or in your stove but you got really nice wood there and you can make an early nice place. By the way you know you have all those really nice bears around there that are Berry bears and they're the best tasting bears you should get a bear tag for just one beer

I admit the current situation is not optimal and I will need to do something when time permits. The main issue is that the lake level is constantly changing, which means the ramps are never contacting the shore in the same place twice. Thank you for the suggestion! -Ryan
@quarlow1215
@quarlow1215 2 ай бұрын
I was thinking, you hot all those old notched logs from the cabin. What about building a cribbed barge dock. You would use the logs to make a u shaped crib out from the beach about 5 feet out and the fill it with dirt and rocks right to filled full. Then you could nose the barge right up to it, drop ghe ramps on the the dock and then tie the barge off. Now you can drive straight on and off. You'd have to gauge how high to make it taking in account for season water levels.
@mywildholm
@mywildholm 2 ай бұрын
Not THAT is one of the best ideas we have heard yet! I'm going to talk to Melodi about that one. It would be the answer we are looking for... the only issue of course is deciding how high to build it. The water levels of this lake are a constantly moving target. You guys just need to use cement bags, and build up a little ramp to rest your barge ramps on
@mywildholm

You can run a ty rod down through the cement bag down into the sand several feet while they are still dry, then just get the bags wet, you can put nice rocks around your bulk head so it doesn't look so bad, but that whole bank could use that, lots of people do that on shoreline, to stop the erosion, it's a muddy mess when it rains anyway

With all the lovely logs you have and machinery, why don’t you build a landing platform/bridge. I was trying to a photo but it wouldn’t allow, so the thought - * Put 2 vertical logs into the water, on each side, spaced apart wider than the barge, to about 3 metres from the embankment * Attach a big solid log vertically to each side, from the logs in the water to the embankment, at the height of the barge, to form a foundation to attach logs to * Attach big logs horizontally to these vertical ‘struts’ to make a solid platform/ramp/bridge to be able to drive on That way you could manoeuvre the barge right up to the bridge, lower the steel ramps and drive out at straight angle
@mywildholm
@mywildholm 2 ай бұрын
That sounds interesting. Building a wharf is something that I have thought of, but we don't have a pile driver so I'm afraid it would be rather difficult to accomplish. In addition, the waters in front of that landing area are subject to 30km of wind driven ice floes in the winter. I'm afraid the ice would destroy anything I would be able to construct. If the island had rocks on it, I could potentially create a breakwater perpendicular to the ice flows, and tuck a wharf inside that where it would be protected... but we have yet to find ANY rocks. The entire island seems to be a huge pile of sand! Thanks so much for the suggestion. Bye the way, you can always send a sketch to hello@mywildholm.com. I'd be interested to look at it! -Ryan

Maybe a 4” lift kit, Ryan?

That is an interesting idea. All four corners... cool thought, I wonder whar that would look like? Do you know how that might affect fuel economy? -Ryan

@@mywildholm raising the truck may make it top-heavy on the barge would be my top concern

Ryan, this should answer some of your questions. May only take a 2” lift which will reduce the cons.

Thanks to you both... I hadn't even considered the top-heavy potential! I think I'll opt to keep the COG as low as possible and look for an alternate solution. Though Melodi does like the aggressive look of a lift kit with BIG knobby tires, lol! -Ryan.

I was surprised myself when I watched the replay video. I had no idea the front of the barge went underwater like that!! So happy I tied the barge off to a couple of large trees... I think if I didn't, the truck might have gone for a swim! Thank you for watching and commenting. -Ryan

Just reverse the truck on the load will be level

Tried that and it turned the truck into a bull dozer! Works when the ramps are flat but any decline to the shore is a problem because of the front spoiler of the truck being so low to the ground. -Ryan

I see what U mean by ramps, we don't want to say it lol, but we no more young people, what if U use excavator to make a in so barge can come nearer to land

I do have a front hoe attachment for Pepper so I may be able to do something like that. I'll look into it. Thank you for the idea! -Ryan

You need to build yourself a decent ramp on the island so you dont have too go thru that bs every time the loading and unloading each and everytime.

I agree that something should be done... The challenge is that the water level of the lake is constantly changing, which means the angle of the ramps to the shore is constantly changing. Adding even more complexity is the fact that the proximity of the barge to the shore while docked is also a moving target. I have a plan to make things easier where loading/unloading the barge is concerned. It is slowing bubbling closer to the top of my priorities list. -Ryan
