I remember going from the UK to Barbados at 7 years old for my first holiday, seeing black people on TV and surrounded by people who look like you, it gives you a new confidence and perspective
@apara20052 жыл бұрын
It hit me when you said to walk around with people who look like you. I never experienced that, must be wonderful 🥰. I'm not a self conscious person, I still walk out my mostly white neighborhood with my hair in a hair wrap, or in crown rolls or in twist. But I can feeeeeel the eyes and the judgment. Or the long states I get when I walk out with my very large afro....like I'm an alien from out of space. Would be nice to do all the above and no one even bats an eye because it's normal.

But even in black communities if you are not dressed a particular way and your edges are not laid or you're actually wearing sporting the hair that grows out of your head, you get those stares sometimes

I really appreciate sharing the flip side of things which must be hard to do. I was so stressed seeing the crowds, traffic, but fell so in love with the people. I'm 30 now and i definitely never want to live there ever again! Nigeria is more than Lagos and im so glad i got to experience even more of Nigeria. Next time you come to Nigeria, try visiting other places like Abuja, port Harcourt, Kano, Bauchi. Ibadan. So many other lovely places ❤

I *completely* understand about putting more stress on yourself, I'm one of those people who does that too! I have to UNDER-do it just to make things work for me. Like I have to build in lots of rest and down time in the day or I just get overwhelmed and can't do it. Please take care of yourself!! I understand the appreciation that you have for Nigeria too (even though I've never been). @@SeunOkimi what I am about to say might sound judgemental but it's not ( or maybe it is, but I'm not coming from a bad place): (Sirey for the grammatical errors. My first language is portuguese) How can our African continent grow when our youth are not coming back to use their knowledge for the development of our continent? How can we fight poverty when our people choose to work for other countries making them richer and richer? I do understand that it's not easy to adjust but we have to start somewhere. Africa will beat poverty if we ( africans) work for us and not for the "white countries". My advice to you and everybody who is doing the same as you,to think about this and visualise, not your future, but your children's future in European/american countries vs in african countries developed by you (the parents). Blessings to you all!

Traffic, hustling, the begging right from the airport etc. From the heat and smell of gas at the airport in arrival, the stress and extortion going through customs cos of our expired passports and subsequent extortion from every official we came across. To walking miles to the parking and dragging our luggage, my 12 yr old said mom i don't ever wanna come back. And i don't blame her

@@SeunOkimi Yes!! Lagos was so busy!! I never experienced anything like that. I was staying in Ibadan, but by the time my flight landed at 4pm and I had to go through all the security, plus my luggage was left in Lomé 😩 it would've taken 3 hours to get to Ibadan after I finally got out of the airport at 5:30pm. Girl I got my hair done in Nigeria and my only reference of recent Nigerian hair stylist scenes was your video, so I began fantasizing, mine didn't go so sweet, their salon was more upscale and modern but dang they tried to rip me off and the constant questions around my trip, when I was going back home... And if I had citizenship started making me feel like I was about to be kidnapped 😭 I did not say "I don't want peace, I want problems always" so not sure why that trip was so stressful, hope my hair doesn't fall out in 3 months.

I understood when you said you add to your own stress 😂😂. That's definitely me.

I love your videos Seun I totally relate cos I'm Nigerian and have lived in Lagos all my life... But not all of it is stressful. Uyo, Akwa ibom, Nigeria is my hometown and it's the complete opposite of Lagos in everything- the good and the bad, if you know what I mean Lol Can't wait for you to get back to doing your hair videos too. It has helped me so much in my hair transition journey
