I always wondered how many times earth has narrowly avoided complete annihilation... in the grand scheme of things it's only a matter of time before we face another large chunk of rock hurling towards us. We've even had some fairly near passes even recently.

One of the best I've heard since "I'm a monster created by the government to hunt other monsters". The twist is really really cool. Not your run of the mill, good guys win scenario. The struggle is needed to be able to grow and persevere. Like with a butterfly struggling out of its cocoon, or a lobster, molting. That struggle is needed to create strength and toughness.

@michelelyons94102 жыл бұрын
A really grand story, with a fabulous twist at the end. I would highly recommend this. The protagonist is not a monster----but he is a man with a god complex. Who is he, and what right does he have to decide the fate of billions? The term "the Greater Good" has been used so many times to excuse horrendous acts that it has soured it considerably. The problem with the "the Greater Good" is that usually the people deciding what is the greater good are not the people who suffer for it. Sure, this guy lost his own life, but he did not suffer what he had done, he took the easy way out. And he apparently had no loved ones left behind to suffer. He mentions no wife, children, mother, sibling, not even friends. Look at how he is so condescending when he mentions the "guys in the field". Men who have fought and maybe died saving the world. You have to wonder just how isolated this guy was, and if he would have been so fast to condemn the world if he had people he loved in it. So he condemned billions to suffering and death----as if he were some great judge over all with the right to do so. Of course, a world following such a catastrophe would pull together and find a better way to live----they would have to, if they were to survive. But that would hardly make that catastrophe "worth it". It always happens after a major disaster. Rome fell, and the Dark Ages happened, but they was followed by the Renaissance. Just like after WWII, science, medicine, technology, etc. all took a huge leap ahead, accelerated by the effect of the world war. Man kind always rises above a disaster---that is why we survive as a species. But I am betting that those benefits and advances would have happened anyway, but at a much slower rate, in their own time. What the protagonist of this story wanted was the beneficial future he saw----and he wanted it right now. And he was willing to sacrifice billions for it. I would bet all those people would rather not have suffered and died for his vision, regardless of how beneficial. This guy was like the MCU movie villian Thanos. How do you solve the world's problems? Easy, you murder half of the world's population. Yeah, great idea. This guy was a coward. He did not make the hard decision. the hard decision would have been to have some faith in humanity, and prevent the disaster. Not to make it happen. To have the hope that mankind would slowly advance, century after century, until we reached that great future. But instead he decided that humankind was worthless, unable to help themselves or choose their future. He had spend so much time sitting and making decisions that it went to his head. He was "god" who had the right to decide the fate of the world. So he died, with the blood of billions on his hands, without having suffered any of the consequences of his actions. The problem is that he did not really value those people. They were not real to him, they were only numbers on a computer. The were "collateral damage". Well, it's a different story when you and those you care about are the collateral damage. An excellent story, well written and told.
@VidkunQL2 жыл бұрын
In a case like that, _someone_ has to decide the fate of billions. Does anyone else have a better right?

This kinda reminded me of the song The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth by Creature Feature as both involve insects going on a rampage, as well as The Mist by Stephen King (giant insectoid monsters capable of destroying cars.) I feel like while the protagonist had good intentions, they're really all for nothing. Sure, there's the possibility of a Utopia, but there's also the possibility he was only looking at it through one perspective. Due to how far into the future said Utopia ends up coming into being, there's multiple ways for it to exist without unleashing a horde of giant insects.
@SamuelGalvan_2 жыл бұрын
This is addressed in the story itself. He looked at the all the futures without the bugs. The utopia didn’t happen then

This is the same thought process every practitioner of genocide has used. “My attempts to end the life of all those making things bad for the rest of us will ultimately make all our lives easier, therefore my wanton destruction and murder is justified and worth it.” The guy is fine with the deaths of billions and being the one responsible for them because in some futures it makes the world better for those that weren’t eaten.

There are trees in the mountains, but they are miles and miles away from Reno. And of course a waste water treatment plant for Reno would not be up hill from Reno. That reminds me: What were Jack and Jill doing on that hill? You don't go *UP* a hill to fetch a pale of water, because you don't put a well on a hill. going back to steal your keys is a paradox. if you didn't run over a pedestrian what reason would you have to go back and steal your keys in the first place. as far as an alternate time line, say you go back and steal your keys, now you have no reason to go back in time, so something would of had to have happened to create this alternate time line, something significant enough to make you go back. a better way would be to go back and make the original target take a detour and rig up a phony pedestrian, that way you will have saved them, while thinking you still hit them.
