I realy like this tutorial, because I love both, black&white photography and speedlites, sometimes I use LED torches to illuminate the set-up, not an issue with the black&white mode the DIY background and floor look great in these results, I like it

I`m an ambitious hobby photographer and a hobby "strobist" since the 1980s and I`m always using speedlites for nearly 80% of my photography under all conditions, so trust me, it is in fact that simple, it`s no rocket science or witchcraft, but it`s a lot of "learning by doing" and "trial and error", you need a lot of training, experimenting and gaining experience to get the routine to get the results you want or need as easy, reliable and quick as you like and one or much better more TTL speedlites plus a radio TTL trigger system make life way much easier and the most important thing is always to make suitable notes and sketches of the set-ups and settings that have led to success or of effective advices from other photographers, websites, videos, magazines etc in order to avoid unnecessary experiments in comparable situations, this little book is the most important accessory ... and as a summary, you can`t do anything wrong with speedlites and set-ups like this, if you don`t like the result, delete it and try again ... and have fun

Great video Gavin, how to you focus when you are doing a self portrait?
@AbbasBinYounas3 жыл бұрын
It can usually be done through the app for your camera on your smartphone. I have a canon 6d and an Olympus e-m10, and the focus works fine through their smartphone apps over WiFi.
@cerec693 жыл бұрын
Couldn’t you just pre focus then switch off the AF?

Nice quick video, very informative. Which light meter do you use, as I have Pixapro lights?

Hi Stuart. I use the sekonic L-308 light meter.

@toshtwentythree1953 жыл бұрын
Did you use the ad200 over the ad400 or higher because of the reflector size due to your small studio ? Thank you
@alanlafferty65933 жыл бұрын
Great video gavin as always. I always thought 12mm would be way to wide for portraits. But it looks great. I've a small home studio in a spare room and about to get a 17 to 28. Hoping it'll help get some full body shots.
@MrJueKa3 жыл бұрын
don`t forget, in this video it is a 12mm lense for MFT, means 24mm for full frame and yes, that`s a good focal lense for people photography to involve the environment

Hey Gavin. Great work as usual. Do you think the Godox sk 300ii is any good. Thinking about purchasing it. My budget is really tight.
@GavinHoey3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcus. I've not tried that one but if you ever plan to shoot on location, it's hard to beat battery powered flash 😉
@tommino89703 жыл бұрын
I have two SK400ii for years, got them for sale price of "300". Solid construction, Bowens fits well even with heavy 90cm deep parabol softbox, 5m power-cable included and modeling light is really nice thing, which is missing at AD200. All functions controlled via Xpro and all together, lot of good gear for less money. BTW, the battery for AD600pro costs much more than SK400ii.

How do you determine your f stop ? Why a 5.6 f stop ?
@peter_shadow75593 жыл бұрын
A little late here but better late than never. Gavin decides that aperture by the depth of field he desires. It is basically a general rule of thumb. Decide what the depth of field will be first and then assign the ideal power to the lights.
@cerec693 жыл бұрын
Could you have used a reflector instead of the ‘ fill’ light?
@MrJueKa3 жыл бұрын
of course, but with less "drama", a reflector gives soft light and shadows, a directed speedlite with a grid gives this punch we like in such photos
