This will be the first of a series of videos focusing on lighting for Makeup Artists!
I am starting with a simple explanation of colour temperature - what it is, why it is important, and I'll explain how understanding colour temperature can help you get the most out of your lighting systems.

I have had the diva ring for the last year and I dont like it, now I understand why. when I was doing my research, I read a lot that 5500K is king, but especially when taking photos of my work, I love that golden hour light. I know you said you would get to it, but in short, do you have a lighting system you love most?

Hey Angie, thanks for the video! I was wondering if you could do a video on stagnancy in work, I know you did a video about staying motivated and it was incredibly helpful... but I'm curious what your break down would be on how to kickstart your career again when everything seems to be at a standstill. I've been working as an editorial makeup artist for four years and it feels like I'm having to start all over again. I'm getting booked for the same 'no makeup' makeup looks and am not getting hired for anything else (and that work is slowing down because so many people can do that sort of look!). I guess maybe it would also be helpful to do a video on how to brand yourself properly so that you're representing yourself as the type of artist you truly are? I know this is super loaded, I hope this makes sense!

Yes I hear you! In short it's all about being versatile (and showing you are versatile). The industry is changing at such a rapid pace that we all have to keep up. If you are getting booked for natural makeup looks and want to do more you should be organizing shoots that are completely different to refresh your social media/portfolio. Or at the very least continue to reach out to new photographers you haven't work with to shoot - this will help you start to extend your reach a bit (if that makes sense). I'll make a note to come back to this topic and share more info!

This is very helpful as I've been trying to figure out how lighting has been affecting my makeup photos. Is it better to get rid of every other light source except the type of light being used for the photo?

Sometimes additional light sources can help the photo depending on how much brightness you need but I like to start without external lighting and go from there to see how the photo changes.

Thank you!!!! I wish I found you years ago but I’m here now lol :) soo a lot of the lights I have have like “3 settings” for lack of better way to say it. One looks more like an LED, one looks like a sunset, and one is more blueish cool tone. Do you know if these have names? Lol or is it just in temperature? Is temp different than power? Seems like an obvious YES of course it is but I’m still kind of confused!

Colour Temperature is different from brightness/power (the measurement for brightness is actually called 'lumens' if you are interested 😄) so likely what you are seeing with your lights are the different temperatures.

What do you think about the neewer ring light? 😊 and what range would be best to mimic for natural light

I haven't used the Neewer ring light so I'm not sure about the quality of light. I prefer a double light panel while I'm working. Natural light is between 5000K - 6500K.

Do you use your lighting system while in studio for a photoshoot?

I use it to light my model and leave it setup for the duration of the shoot in case there are any touch ups/look changes. Other than that the photographer handles all the lighting on studio shoots.

Is the lighting lumens important too?

Lumens measure brightness so it definitely would be if you were buying a lighting system where you were switching out bulbs, or looking at purchasing a system that would compare in brightness to some of these lighting systems.

I don't have a recommendation for you it would really depend on how you like to work, what type of light you are purchasing, and how it will be used. It's really something you need to see and experience yourself. What might seem bright enough to me, might seem too bright to another artist for example.
