He is quite unique and has an amazing voice and always so theatrical and energetic on stage - still going at it at 65! (He also is a pilot and flies their touring jumbo jet). I'm 49 and I grew up with three older sisters who between them brought me up in the late 70's to mid 80's musically with a combination of classic rock, metal, indie, alternative, punk and new wave. The first live band I ever saw was Maiden at the NEC, Birmingham, UK back in 1988 when I was 15. They blew me away and they are definitely one of the all-time greats of metal. This song in particular is truly one of my all-time favourite heavy metal songs. It has everything! Slow build up, tension, drama, theatrics, high notes, low notes, Bruce Dickinson hanging on in there for really bloody long notes. Superb lyrics. Amazing guitar solo. Fabulous guitar harmonies between Adrain Smith and Dave Murray. Cracking drumming from the late, great Clive Burr (before the long running legend Nicko McBrain took over the sticks). The master and main man behind Maiden, Steve Harris driving it all with those filthy bass lines. It's just the absolute perfect heavy metal song to me. I know others may well disagree. This is just purely my own opinion :) It's great to see the younger generation still having huge love for classic bands like these :)

Greatest metal band of all time. Check out Aces High, Where Eagles Dare, Somewhere in Time, The Evil That Men Do, The Trooper, Powerslave… okay you know what, this list is going to be too long… just check out all their 80s stuff. I don’t know much beyond their 80s work. Their first two albums have a different singer, they changed drummers after this album and Nicko McBrain has been their drummer ever seen. Their most consistent lineup is Steve Harris on bass, Dave Murray on guitar, Bruce Dickinson vocals, Nicko McBrain on drums, Adrian Smith on guitar. And they’re all in the band now. This is such a fun band to be into, and that goes beyond their music… so become familiar with Eddie 😆

Let me tell you, doesnt matter which song you listen from them. They got 100+ incredible songs which i wish i thought the same for other groups. Unfortunately there isnt a group in my opinion with more than 15-20 great songs, and this guys have over a hundred (for me, in my opinion). I recommend you listen to as much of their music as you can, you will be glad you found them. Every song gets better as well with more listens. There are sone of them you might hear and like, and after a few listens you will start to love it! Up the Irons!

Avenged Sevenfold has easily more than 20 amazing songs IMO. I'm a huge fan of them and their musical knowledge and boldness. Interestingly enough, they were hugely influenced by Iron Maiden, Metallica and guns and roses. If there is one album that reminds me of Iron Maiden is City of Evil

I remember this album when it came out, I was in 9th grade and the guys in my shop class where playing this cassette every day….it didn’t take long I was hooked, I became a metal head, my whole attitude and life changed…Iron Maiden has the best of everything from the singer, the bass guitarist and 2 excellent lead guitarist who play in perfect harmony together, there is no particular song to recommend but this song is one of my all time favorites, I would recommend the Live after Death album…every song is great!!

Iron Maiden is a classic heavy metal band from the UK, and they have gotten more prog-oriented metal these last 2 decades... Steve Harris (bass) formed the band in 1975... Harris wrote 'Hallowed be thy name' as an ode to a man's final hour before his execution, not as a religious statement, but more about his final thoughts about his faith... it came out in 1982 on Maiden's 3rd album 'The number of the beast'. The band on this recording was Bruce Dickinson (vocals), Dave Murray & Adrian Smith (guitars), Steve Harris (bass) and (the late) Clive Burr (drums)... Burr was replaced by Nicko McBrain (drums) in 1983... Clive Burr passed away from MS in 2013. Iron Maiden was formed in London, UK by bassist Steve Harris in 1975 after he had started writing original songs, but couldn't convince a band to play them, cos they were complicated pieces of music w/ time changes and prog elements. Iron Maiden would be his vehicle for performing his songs. They were a bar and club band for years and went through various members from 1975 to 1979... Dave Murray (guitar) would join in 1976 and became a permanent member by 1977... Paul Di'Anno (vocals) joined in 1977 w/ drummer Doug Sampson. Iron Maiden was finally signed in 1979, just as Sampson left the band... Clive Burr (drums) and Dennis Stratton (guitar) were added to the line-up and recorded the first Iron Maiden album in 1980. Maiden's manager got a local artist Derek Riggs for the first album cover of a shriveled ghoul in the dark streets of London w/ hollow eyes - that became Iron Maiden's mascot 'Eddie the head'... and was used on every Maiden album cover (and singles & t-shirts) in different iterations. The first Iron Maiden album shocked everyone by going top 5 in the UK... Adrian Smith (guitar) replaced Dennis Stratton for the next album 'Killers' in 1981, w/ veteran producer Martin Birch working w/ Maiden in the studio. The band played the US and Japan for the first time... However, vocalist Paul Di'Anno was burning out on drugs and alcohol while touring and parted ways w/ Maiden in '81. Bruce Dickinson (vocals) joined for Maiden's 3rd album 'The number of the beast' in 1982, and the band's popularity skyrocketed as the album hit the UK charts at #1 and went platinum in the US... Nicko McBrain (drums) replaced Clive Burr in 1983 for the 'Piece of mind' album... Iron Maiden were now headlining arenas and delivering platinum selling records going into 1984 w/ the 'Powerslave' album, and touring everywhere they could, including South America for the first time. The band issued the live album 'Live after death' in 1985. Maiden returned in 1986 w/ 'Somewhere in time' and were more popular than ever... but the band's internal conflicts were beginning. After the 'Seventh son of a seventh son' album in 1988, guitarist Adrian Smith left the band. In 1990, the band replaced Smith w/ Janick Gers (guitar) and released 'No prayer for the dying' ... but Maiden's popularity in the 90's was starting to wane in the US... the album 'Fear of the dark' in 1992 marked the last album w/ producer Martin Birch. It went to #1 on the UK charts. But in 1993, vocalist Bruce Dickinson announced that he was leaving the band for a solo career. Iron Maiden hired vocalist Blaze Bayley and recorded the rather dark album 'The X Factor' in 1995, but in the wake of 90's grunge and alternative rock, Maiden's brand of metal was not in demand and the record was a commercial disappointment... Fans also did not approve of Blaze Bayley's vocal style that was different from Dickinson's. The next album 'Virtual XI' in 1998 was their poorest-selling record of Maiden's career. In 1999, the decision was made to fire Blaze Bayley... Bruce Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith expressed interest in coming back, so both rejoined Iron Maiden that year and announced a reunion tour, making Iron Maiden a 3-guitar band for the first time w/ Dave Murray, Janick Gers and Adrian Smith... Their 2000 album 'Brave new world' was a huge comeback for Iron Maiden. Since then, Iron Maiden has issued more records that have hit the US and UK charts as their fanbase grew once again, all over the world... Interesting to see a young person experiening the music of my youth...i'm 58 and have been a fan of maiden since 1980 and the first album when i was 16. When this music came out heavy metal was a very underground music and the new wave from the UK like Maiden was just so fresh and full of energy that no other genre had at the time , Maiden changed my life and i played in metal bands for years and even though music has changed these guys never shifted from their focus to play honest music ....cheers from New Zealand

Hey so awesome to see you. Im from Sweden and back in 89' i was vacationing with my family 9 years old and bought my first CD in a store somewhere i didnt even have a CD player HAHA. But heck that CD was Iron Maiden's "The number of the beast" album and did i learn those lyrics inside and out those weeks we were camping? Hell yes.In fact the first time i heard that album i reacted just like you did to this song. It was epic and so was your reaction. Good one Lilly and im subbing you. Cheers from Sweden. I remember when this hit the record stores. I knew all the words after about a month and the music was pretty heavy. I never thought about the meaning of those word nor how or why the tempo builds. I knew this was entertainment and that's as far as it went.

4:13 That palpable urgency is what is missing in today's music that is snapped to a computer grid, and set at one BMP for the whole song. Songs recorded on tape... usually recorded Live flowed according to the drummer and the band themselves, and changed BMP all over the place. What's known as "the groove"... it comes from the interactions between the band. Todays "Pro Tools" music doesn't have those fluctuations in tempo that create that groove.

One thing you'll find out about Maiden is that their lyrics are HIGHLY narrative, and many of their songs tell a story, often steeped in history and mythology (Aces High, for instance, is about the Battle of Britain during WWII).

USSR, 1983, Brezhnev died recently, I studied in the 7th grade, with great difficulty I bought a disc Iron Maiden from the son of an engineer working abroad for 70 rubles, a lot of money at that time. And a new world opened up before me.

Lead singer is Bruce Dickinson. One of the greatest voices in rock (metal) history. Not only trained in classical opera but has a commercial pilot's licenses for 737, 747, and 757!!

I believe this is what they call *POWER METAL* And Power metal is a subgenre of heavy metal combining characteristics of traditional heavy metal with speed metal, often within symphonic context. Generally, power metal is characterized by a faster, lighter, and more uplifting sound, in contrast with the heaviness and dissonance prevalent, for example, in extreme metal. Power metal bands usually have anthem-like songs with fantasy-based subject matter and strong choruses, thus creating a theatrical, dramatic and emotionally "powerful" sound. A landmark album not only in Metal music history, but also for the band itself. They fired their original vocalist Paul Di'Anno and hired former Samson lead Bruce Dickinson. With the lineup change, came a change in musical style too. Iron Maiden were one of the more well known acts among the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM or Nuh-Wob-Um), a subgenre of Metal that mixed classic 70's rock and metal with Punk. The band took the opportunity to take a new direction, not only because of the lineup change, but because NWOBHM was on its way out. With Number of the Beast came a more classic heavy metal sound with elements of prog and amazing vocals that were a complete contrast to Di'Anno's more sharper, rougher and punkier delivery. Paul brought attitude, Bruce brought stage presence and bravado. Where Paul was comfortable in smaller venues, Bruce commands arenas. All this and more pretty much catapulted Maiden to the top and pretty much rode that wave of success through to the end of the 80's. Even today their albums hit the top 10, some reach number 1, they sell out areas around the world and even Lady Gaga loves them. Hallowed Be Thy Name is a great closer to the album but is even better live, hell I'd say any Maiden song played live is worth listening/watching. I won't overwhelm you with recommendations, there are plenty here in the comments but I would stick to their 80's output for now, familiarise yourself and then listen to more recent tracks.
