Speaking as a bisexual, I dont even see how someone came to the conclusion that Anna and Elsa are gay based on them being nervous around each other. Especially Anna! The story made it clear that she hadn't seen her sister for YEARS! Of course she'd be nervous around Elsa. I would be too. If I had to talk to someone who isolated herself from me for a reasons unknown, I'd be extremely nervous too. I dont know what's going to set her off and shut me out again. Lee should have just said something concrete like no.

From what I've seen, Elsanna shippers really reach for reasons to say it's canon, so even removing that element wouldn't stop them. I know shippers do this anyway, but the couple I came across were just taking every. single. thing that they said and over-analysing it. I forget the exact wording as it was so long ago, but I remember somebody commenting on a Frozen video like: "They both sighed at the smell of chocolate. Chocolate is a symbol of love and the fact they said it in unison in an almost orgasmic tone means they share feelings of love for each other." and it was then I realised that the plot didn't matter and some shippers will just do whatever they can to justify their gross fantasy about fictional characters.

The thing about the awkward dialogue with Hans and Elsa isn't that Anna babbles around people she finds attractive, but rather she is bad at taking to strangers and her sister is a stranger to her. I don't understand how people can seriously use that as evidence that the writers are supporting incest 🤦

It’s not even that she’s bad at talking to strangers. With Hans she thought he could be her “true love” and she didn’t want to screw it up. And with Elsa she finally had a chance to potentially rebuild her relationship with Elsa that she missed so much, and she didn’t want to screw it up. It’s not about talking to strangers, it’s about not wanting to screw up relationships that she sees as valuable to her. She has no problem talking to Oaken or Kristoff who are also strangers.

Considering that the powerful familial love between Anna and Elsa was meant to *subvert* the idea that romantic love is the only kind of love that can exist between two people, and this was one of the most blatantly spelled-out themes in the entire movie, it baffles me that so many people missed the point entirely.

Its ironic as hell... Like Elsa having a partner, since 2013 they make Elsa single to make her independent and focus on her power and her Sister (a pretty feminist idea) and to many ppl her Sexuality and for that her possible partner being a man or a woman became a kind of Treasure Hunt. Its hiliarious and frustrating.

He could have spoken up and outed the abusers, but decided he liked getting paid more so he more or less said that the girls wanted to have sex with their fathers. And I didn't know about the homosexuality thing that Commenter Silrem brought up, but damn, that just shows that he is literally the worst. I only quoted it because I felt it made sense since the point of the video is that people sometimes read too much into things, but I'm not sure if he actually even said it; for all I know, it could be like the "If you can't handle me at my worst, you don't deserve me at my best." quote that everyone claims Marilyn Monroe said but have provided no evidence of, and considering what a shit person he was I kind of don't want it to be from him.

Your point is exact. Its totally fine to relate to characters like Elsa but the way that some people project onto her and "kin" her is such a parasocial and unhealthy coping mechanism bc they have no way to fix their issues and find it easier to project onto Elsa and wallow in their own issues and treat that like some quirk rather than a psychological issue that needs fixing. You pretty much nailed it with your point, and I applaud you.

@@qavainnd is it common for people to have relationships like Elsa and Anna in terms of romance? No, because they're sisters and that would be incest. In terms of sibling and platonic, yes, because a lot of relationships, especially siblings with mental illnesses like Elsa's anxiety, and younger siblings tend to not understand which can create a rift between a relationship like that. It is common for people to have a sibling or platonic relationship like Elsa and Anna, but not romantic.

Elsa has big anxiety, "Let it Go" is her way of finally accepting herself but she immediately reverts back to self hatred and anxiety when she finds out about her mistake. Elsa needed "Let it Go" to figure out what she can do and fully grasp her powers, but she needed the rest of the story to fully come to terms with herself and find her place within her society without hurting others or herself. It was a two-step process but a lot of people only seem to focus on the first step. Idk if any of that makes sense.

the ship has always made me super uncomfortable. the first movie came out when I was a little kid, and was extremely relatable to me, and helpful, because I was literally experiencing the same thing with my older brother. my parents were getting divorced, my brother had shut himself up with his own demons unbeknownst to me, and I was left in the dark about someone who had been my best friend for years. it sucked, a lot, and anna was the princess I needed. anna was angry at elsa, and fiery, and wanted love in her life, whether that be FAMILIAL love from her sister, or the romantic kind. but at the end, they found each other again, and were able to be a family, even when their parents were gone. I really, really needed that hopeful, happy ending when I was a kid. and a bunch of adults trying to insert their incest kink into a kids movie just, really salts my melon.

This is actually news to me, people thinking Frozen was a 'coming out' story. I saw the movie as just any other that Disney makes. A kid's movie with lots of good songs to draw cheers, portraying simple themes of valuing family and being true to yourself, something/someone preventing the protagonist from being herself that she must overcome, a cheesy romance sub-plot, and a happily ever after in the end. The main differences was that there was no obvious powerful/evil villain and the thing that saved the princess in the end wasn't true love's kiss.

No need to be afraid. It will be ok. She doesn’t know what to do.That and it just seems like a sweet story about two siblings who loves each other’s trying to reconnect after years of not being able to interact. And it was cute. And I loved it. I loved watching Anna try to help her sister and bring her home so they could be a family again. And It was just so cute. I’ve also found it gross and disturbing to ship Anna with Elsa. They are siblings that’s just gross. Ew. Just ew. Someone though my brother and I were dating and I almost hurled. He’s my brother. Ew. The title alone makes me alright with that fact that we'll be suffering hearing about this ship that I had no idea about until last week. Is another reason it exists have to do with the fact that canon lesbian couples are so few and far between, at least in 2013, that people took what is obviously an adorable sister-relationship, turned it into a gay metaphor and settled for that? Just curious

Honestly, I saw Elsa's powers more be more a metaphor/application to disability more than an LGBT coming out story. I always saw that Anna saw Elsa's unique powers like magic and after the incident, Elsa feels that acting 'normal' is for the best but it causes her anguish. It was only when Anna fully accepted Elsa (in turn, sacrificing herself), Elsa could truly let it go and be truly like her self again. At least, that's my idea.

To play devil's advocate a little, Elsa could be worried that her sexuality would hurt Ana's reputation. When I tried to come out to my parents, they told me it would reflect poorly on them and they wouldn't be allowed to hold leadership positions in the church. They also said I'd have to be closeted around my younger cousins and if I dated a girl, I wouldn't be allowed to even come to the gatherings they were at. Not saying I believe the metaphor, but it's applicable to me.

I really enjoyed Frozen when it came out and the one thing after all these years that really ruined it for me (besides the mass overproduction) was how the fans really tried to make frozen more than it was. Just as lily says with the Elsa-Anna ship or the lgbt representation the fans of both those communities either projected really hard or just based it off the awkward dialogue between Elsa and Anna. The thing is only older people would see or try to project these implications onto this movie while the children that watched this at the time(like myself) are only going to see the movie for what it literally was: the first Disney movie based on familial love saving the day and Elsa and Anna being able to depend on one another after their parents death and Elsa’s own personal goal of overcoming her fear for herself after hurting her sister. That was what made frozen great at the time besides the music and animation. There was also the incident of fans who really wanted Elsa to be gay so they could have Elsa with a girlfriend in the next movie who often threatened the creator if they didn’t get it, which just further discouraged lgbt representation in Disney.

I just want to say that as an older sister, if I thought I had lost my sister forever (from my own actions, no less) and then got her back, that hug would have been way longer than we got in the movie. Elsa should have been clinging on to Anna for next the hour or so.

I notice a lot of writers don't know how to write sibling relationships or dialogue. So a lot of them come off as unintentionally romantic. It's weird. Sometimes you can blame the chemistry between two actors, but that excuse doesn't really work for animation. That said, sibling shipping is gross regardless.

As a bisexual homoromantic woman, you will never ever convince me that Elsa's story isn't a metaphor - but you will also never convince me that it's a gay one. It's about mental illness, specifically anxiety disorders . "Fear will be her enemy" is literally a line in the movie for godssakes! I do see the gay parallels but being gay has nothing to do with the story whereas fear is baked into the narrative.

That's not a metaphor. I'm pretty sure she just flat out HAS anxiety. It's not a metaphor if it's in the story proper.

@@Lily_Orchard Fair point... I guess it's more subtext, since they never actually spell it out, and there have been people who say I'm reading too much into it when I say she has an anxiety disorder.

I mean... When I first watched Frozen with my best friend, she was absolutely obsessing over it and projecting HARD on Elsa. It's a good movie and all and I like it perfectly fine, but 'Let It Go' once I saw it in context... It didn't feel like an empowerment anthem to me at all. Because to me it was blatantly obvious that she was lying to herself. That she was still scared. That she couldn't 'let it go.' Like, the line, 'The cold never bothered me anyway,' just screams that she's deluding herself. Yeah, the cold may not bother her physically, but the entire movie up to that point was about how the cold bothered her! On the other hand, I ended up finding myself relating to Anna's story a lot. I too am a younger sibling who often felt like I was left to the wayside growing up. And the story between Anna and Elsa... For my best friend, I was Anna. Scared for this person that I deeply love (platonicaly) and who I consider to be family. She was keeping a lot of stuff in and I wanted nothing more than to be there for her and for her to open up and talk honestly to me. But she kept pushing me away. And while I understood why and didn't blame her for it, it made me worry. And I would do anything for her. I would do anything to protect her and to make certain that she's safe but I also understood that she needed space. I understood that I couldn't make her realize what she needed to for her own sake. And I wish that she got the same thing out of Frozen that I did. Because what I got out of it was closer to the authorial intent of that you need human connection and that the love you have for your friends and family will save you while she got a coming out empowerment story. And in the end... I think that I was proven right.

Elsanna to me is just fascinating. Like let's get this out of the way first, incest is disgusting, and no Disney for all it's(many) flaws would not do that. That being said it has so much support, and genuinely good fan art or fanfics(main of which go out of there way to turn the story AU where they aren't related because incest is disgusting but they still want to ship it). Like what about this one "ship" got so much support, good even beautiful support, despite being just so icky on a conceptual level.

On the topic of "always looking for symbolism", particularly how the point of it being pushed by English teachers, I wonder if the reason behind that is through looking at stories with rose-tinted glasses. The book is seen as a "classic" and true it can be, but I wonder if that thought process has accidentally made it become "the author was perfect and planned everything". It might not be that and it's probably just the fact that teachers need to do that to get their students to deal with the bullshit of standardized tests so the teacher can get a paycheck. But hey, food for thought I suppose

Honestly what annoys me about shipping the most is how black and white it can all be. I feel that Elsa and Anna have a compelling dynamic, however, that doesn't they should have romantic feelings towards each other. I feel like a lot of times in fandom culture, if two characters have compelling interactions, then they should obviously date. But that's just flat out not true. Characters can have compelling relationships that are not romantic in the slightest, they could be friends, allies, enemies, or even things you can't put a label on. I feel like you should be able to enjoy character interactions that are platonic.

Seeing that slash between Elsa and Anna, physically pained me. I thought Elsana was something to do with the second movie because I haven't seen it! Ew. Also, I think that people should be careful about pushing their personalities, thoughts, feelings and insecurities onto these fictional characters. They are characters. Built to tell a story and many lack the nuance or good writing to convey what someone are going through accurately. It leads to people to continue to look for or fabricate common ground with the character, which can lead to warped thinking and much worse.

I may be biased but if anything Elsa seems way more asexual than gay to me and people tend to get very very angry about ace-headcanons for that fictional character for some reason saying that headcanoning her as such is lesbophobic??? It amuses me because one - she has no canon sexuality so it's all up to the fans to play around tbh, and two - it's not like there's zero basis for such headcanon. Not like I care much but I am just confused.

As someone who studied in literature, what you say about how we wrongly analyse metaphors kinda blow my mind, because it make so much sense and still, we only learn in school how to prove our own theorie. Essais are never about the "pros and cons", but only what you choose to show to make your point. And that's a terrible mentality ! Especially in university, where you are suppose to learn that you have to challenge your own ideas. Saddly, the education will always stay in a traditionnal mindset, same as Hollywood, so we'll probably never see a new way to write essais before a long long time... and that's why I never did a master degree xD (Also, my native langage is french, so no, I'm not a graduate in literature only to be so bad at writing ^^')
