To someone who experienced the variety of games during the 90s and 00s, modern AAA games feel like carbon copies of eachother with different visuals. It's near impossible to get excited about anything, no matter how good it looks, and I don't even think the GTA VI trailer looks exceptional to begin with.

They have shown the best aspects of what they're making, as is the whole point of trailers and marketing. People clinging desperately to fantasies of them somehow having made basically a different much better game than just another GTA V online mod shown in this trailer need to snap out of their delusions and smell the coffee. Rockstar is just a brand name left over from a once great, creative and cutting edge team of devs that now have nothing whatsoever to do with the company. It's just a whole new company now with old beloved copyrights they are using to profit from endlessly. GTA 6 is just another GTA V platform, basically, to then flog more online "content" off the back of.

The game I played the most in 2014 was FTL - a game that uses simple pixel graphics and is mostly made up of static screens of spaceships. The game I put the most hours into in 2022 was Downwell - a game that only takes up one third of the screen and literally only displays 3 colours at once. But you know, being photorealistic makes a game objectively better, which is why Among Us, Stardew Valley, and Papers Please completely flopped and everyone hated them.

I do hate how everyone only seems to care about the graphics of games now What game had stood the test of time which had "photoreal" graphics at release? No one is playing GTA3 and it's definitely no ones favorite in the series, and that game was pretty groundbreaking at the time. A lot of people will say San Andreas is the best, because it was fun to play. No one cared about the graphics when you could steal a farm harvester and listen to country music while mowing down people. Anyway yeah GTA6 just looks like more of the same

In my eyes graphics are stagnating, the changes nowadays are too small to really be a big deal, so there is no other choice than that a game has to be good on other points. The switch from 2d to 3d graphics was a big deal, and from there on to HD. But for how long can someone still be impressed by good graphics from a single game? People get used to something really fast. I can't imagine still being interested in let's say, GTA 8, there is only so much you can do with a single formula.

Not really. Minecraft allows the player freedom to do those tasks according to their own vision, whereas RDR2 treats you like a braindead little baby who has to be walked specifically through every minute detail so you do it EXACTLY how the game wants you to.

I know someone who works for R* customer services. That person told me the trailer brought a spike of old players back into the lobbies like we cant imagine. The thing I don't get about the graphics is that while they look good, unless rockstar has some R&D team working on new 3D tech by the time the game releases it already will be aging. It has to run on current gen consoles and for the foreseeable future. Like just look at cyberpunk with path tracing shit looks insane. Gameplay obviously matters more.

For people who were older than a week when GTA 3 came out, yes, the series is getting formulaic and repetitive as hell. How many fucking times can you guys do this drive-to-yellow-dot, cutscene, drive-to-yellow-dot with expository, cutscene loop? Sure sure it looks great (other than the animations looking like they were done by Aamon Hawk). The reason GTA 3 was good was because it did something NEW. Other than instaban, lag-switching-for-private-sessions script kiddie multiplayer the series has basically done fuck all since SA and a trailer full of scripted twerks and daps doesn't demonstrate that trend is changing so far.

I've played all the GTAs going back to playstation 1 top down, by the end of 4 I was done. I bought 5 and didn't even finish it, just becomes boring. Same thing with a bit of extra shine and a few more options.

I usually take your side Limmy, but not being excited about this game is ridiculous. If the world is as populated as the trailer would suggest, it’s going to be exciting carnage for people that want to kill people in real life with cars on beaches and streets. I would imagine you’d be at the front of the queue for that. What more could you want from GTA? The story will be great, Rockstar never lets us down. But yeah, it will be robberies, and car chases, the usual stuff, but a lot more realistic. What do yae expect?

I don't mean this as an insult to you but you may be young. The excitement of video games dies down as you get older (not always). We've seen it all. My own opinion: I knew it was going to be like GTA 5 (set in LA or Miami) with the addition of a woman. You can't make it violent anymore because society has changed drastically in the last 10 years, but it'll be acceptable by society if the character is played by a woman or LGBTQ+. And I ended up being spot on!

That's not really the main idea of GTA (and most open world games) it's simply an element of the game. The main idea of the game is the storyline, the missions, the characters, the dialogue. It just happens to take place in an open world which is there to create a sense of immersion.

It's likely gonna be one of the best games of all time, but agree the rockstar gameplay loop is boring as fuck. A lot of games are carried by the story, with fetch quests or clearing enemies at a location being all you do.

"game is bad because you do the same sorts of things in it multiple times", except it's also completely open-world and is likely gonna have some of the most interesting real-time interactions with the environment to date. just look at rdr2, all the little details everywhere. if you come away from that thinking it's boring you haven't put in enough effort to make it interesting. also there are so many people working on these games, you're just bound to like some parts more than others because it just had different people working on them. just imagine the scope of a project like this, and then look how well they always manage to bring it all together in the end. i never think something that's popular is automatically good, but in the case of rockstar they rarely miss, and it's no wonder a new GTA is instantly like a cultural milestone. it's got everything, all the latest developments in game development, sound engineering, graphic design, motion capture etc. probably millions of hours of work all rolled into one executable you can open at your convenience, whenever it suits you

A repetitive gameplay loop can still be enjoyable if the gameplay itself is satisfying, the characters are engaging, or both. RDR2 managed neither of these, with guns which were awkward and annoying and characters who were somehow both ludicrous caricatures and totally bland. The entire premise of GTA over the years (and derivative series like Saints Row as mentioned) has been satire, and lampooning contemporary popular culture. GTA Online has largely jumped the shark in that regard, and the sort of things parodied in IV and V seem so tame by today's real life standards that there's probably no way they can create a slightly surreal yet relatable world, and certainly not on the sort of physical scale that VI is likely to have. I love IV and RDR. I enjoyed V but can't remember a thing about it (although I only played it once compared to multiple times for the other two) and I absolutely loathed every second of RDR2. I have the platinum trophy in all of these games. I think by the time VI comes out the gaming market will have passed the concept by, but I think Rockstar are about the only company left which could earnestly and realistically attempt to make this game and make it a success.

RDR2 having bland characters is not even close to widely accepted, especially when you praise RDR1 and GTA IV after this, both of which have nowhere near the depth of characterisation that’s in RDR2. It’s regarded as one of the best video game stories of all time and Arthur Morgan is considered one of the greatest protagonists of all time. It’s obviously fine if it’s not for you, but it’s hardly ‘widely accepted’. @@walonsubi
